there's a lot of assumptions made in this article, which tries to develop a "perfect world" scenario.

The arguement is that polygamy (in both forms) is somehow a solution, but it fails to factor in the societal pressures, in which *most* societies (except some islamic societies) are hell-bent on 2 people per wedding band exchange.

If a country went down this path, they'd also need to do a major societal overhaul to make it acceptable and viable; in other words, a social tyranny of sorts, unless, magically, the market forces shift towards those pressures (wich, so far, they haven't).

In north america, mostly whackjobs and crazy mormon sects, which DO abuse women and treat them like a commodity, would regularly use the option of legal polygamy.

/the economics of any scenario are often detached from reality

Do men really want more than one wife? I mean, do you want five women biatching at you to clean the gutters instead oif just the one?

I'm in a polyamorous relationship (2 girlfriends and they are girlfriends), and this article seemed mostly like a bunch of drivel targeted towards an adsense campaign.

With the benefits come the downfalls - but we'll leave that for a thread when the subject article actually has something interesting to say.

while it may sound ok to us men, women are probably more in favour of polygamy than us. Think about it, they can all biatch about their husband together.

The penalty for having two wives is having two mothers in law.

The punishment for polygamy is two wives.

2006-02-23 08:52:46 PM
Didn't RFTA but fark if I'd ever be able to live with another woman that I know is shagging my husband. Too jealous. Polygamy is bs and if you can't be monogamous, then just don't get married. There's no reason in this society, in this day and age for that. I mean, kinky motherfarkers aside...

/not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yeah, my wife requires that I bring the 'spice' home to meet her, and must help with the housework.

would it be ok for a chick to marry two guys?

2006-02-23 08:54:47 PM
-I doubt it would be the fantasy most guys think about. Still, for the right people I'm sure it could work. After all, women complain about lack of emotional support from men, so they'd have each other. Plus the man has no chance of ever winning an argument. And stereo PMS, don't get me started!

/I'd give it a shot

2006-02-23 08:56:46 PM
Why on earth would any man knowingly enter into a situation which involved more than one woman? It's hard enough dealing with them one on one.

2006-02-23 08:57:09 PM
"would it be ok for a chick to marry two guys?"

-What kind of sick, perverted shiat is that!? Get out of here, you freak!

Princess_Headbutt: in this day and age

If it hurts no one, do what you want.

If you don't like it, don't do it. Or change the channel. Or don't buy the album. Whatever.

But someone's not liking it is not a valid reason for outlawing it, legally or socially.

/...and I'm spent.

No, I'm saying that culturally, we in the west are not acclimated to a formal, legal arrangement such as polygamy or polyandry.

2006-02-23 08:59:39 PM
The point of the article seems to be that men can treat women like commodities and women should like it.

Polygamy is, in most cases, slavery.

Princess_Headbutt: No, you said there was no reason for polygamy. Being in love with multiple people is a reason.

There is a story that the Chinese ideogram for discord is two women under one roof. I know know if this is true, but I imagine the reality is.

2006-02-23 09:02:01 PM
Every time I hear the word "polygamy" my fists just clench. Pseudo-intellectuals like to blather about it in a detatched way, ignorant of the truth. I have first-hand information, having watched it destroy people. In no way does it work: as a free-wheeling lifestyle or as a holy, "Yahweh told me" to scenario. It's all about the ownership of others: no ifs ands or buts. It's something, like cannibalism, that we've outgrown.

I realize I live in America, where you're a prude if you don't want to let anyone do any ol' thing they wanna (as long as it doesn't produce a corpse within 10 minutes of the act), but there ARE INDEED some places where we need to set limits; and for good reasons. We have all sorts of laws that rein-in the bullies around us. Making polygamy illegal is one of those.

2006-02-23 09:02:03 PM
More than one wife? Isn't that cruel and unusual punishment?

Now, two girlfriends: that's another story.

I agree with you (and I'm a Baptist... imagine that).

I'm for the complete "divorce" of state- and faith-based marriage. The state can let you marry a RealDoll, for what I care.

...with one important caveat - if children are involved in any way, we must be *much more* careful. I've seen some farked up families screw up some beautiful children.

I talked to my two wives, Righty and Lefty, and they agreed to sign an open relationship contract. Now, if I could just calm them down enough to sign the damn thing.
