I sure hope nothing happens to it.

2006-02-23 09:58:48 AM
I'm so sick of this story. Every day they're talking about it. Like everyone in Arizona lives in Scottsdale. Not everyone gives a crap about their photo radar.

It will probably be illegal by October anyway.

Sorry, but I don't believe the BS about "safety" either... they saw dollar signs and were hooked.

Welcome to our world. Speed cameras are everywhere in the UK.

:-(

2006-02-23 10:03:28 AM
That should be illegal.

2006-02-23 10:12:23 AM
Doesn't this violate about 4 different aspects of the basic idea of "due process"?

2006-02-23 10:25:16 AM
I used to drive the 101 twice a day, to and from work.

The segment of the 101 that now has the speed cameras is the section that I'd always seen accidents and stuff on.

They don't need "speed" cameras, though - they just need "stupid" cameras, and make it illegal to be stupid in the driver's seat.

2006-02-23 10:42:42 AM
The cameras are set to snap photos of drivers who exceed speed limits by 11 mph or more. The speed limit on the 101 is 65 mph.

No the speed limit is 75MPH, since that's how fast you can go without triggering the cameras.

/live in NJ, if they put that on the GSP the state wouldn't even need gas taxes

2006-02-23 10:44:15 AM
Damn. I used to like Scottsdale. I'll miss it.

2006-02-23 10:46:03 AM
As long as they let you speed on the road leading OUT of Scottsdale, I'm okay with this.

2006-02-23 11:00:48 AM
KarmicHoax: It will probably be illegal by October anyway.

Perhaps you're unfamiliar with red light cameras? If those things are an STM for a city, speeding cameras will be like hitting the goddamn jackpot.

Gecko Gingrich: Doesn't this violate about 4 different aspects of the basic idea of "due process"?

No more than red-light cameras...

//They've had mobile camera radar in DC for a while now (including on freeways)... The mayor even admitted it was all about money...

Wonder how much the company gets

2006-02-23 11:12:25 AM
Think of it as a user fee for speeding. You are breaking the law after all.

KyngNothing: No more than red-light cameras...

So? I've got the same concern with those.

2006-02-23 11:23:30 AM
Cameras don't decrease moving violations.

They are actually more dangerous, as drivers are busier worrying about where the damn cameras are when they should be watching the road.

You are breaking the law after all.

The city decided not to handle these tickets as criminal violations because giving defendants rights would take away the profit.

2006-02-23 12:15:41 PM
The process of matching photographs with license plates and driver information and mailing a citation usually occurs in about two weeks. When the city can positively identify the driver, a citation is mailed directly to the driver's address.

Next they'll make it illegal to wear a skimask in your own car.

2006-02-23 12:15:46 PM
Wonder how much it will take for people to revolt against the current speed limit laws...

2006-02-23 12:16:49 PM
From what I remember, some speed cameras in Britain have "guard" cameras watching the main ones from a distance to prevent repetitive vandalism.

I wonder if they have cameras watching the cameras that watch the cameras?

"Your safety is our #1 concern!"

2006-02-23 12:18:16 PM
What's the big deal?... You are allowed to go up to 75 mph on a freeway... if that's not fast enough for you... leave earlier... bunch of big babies... "oh noes, you are infringing on me right to speed"...

I would gladly take the photoradars here in Chicago... if it meant raising our speed limit to your speeds...

I also support being ticketed for not going the minimum (speed limit - 10mph = 55mph) in the two left lanes... those jackass's lead to more accidents because of all the jack-ass's referenced in my first paragraph are so crazy about passing them... Personally, I just drive right up behind them and shake my fist at them... Usually, everything works out for the best...

Sounds like BS to me

damageddude: No the speed limit is 75MPH,

true - but pray your speedometer is properly calibrated. every car i've ever owned has had a speedometer off by ~2-3 mph either way... oh and don't go and put on a new set of tires that aren;t exactly the same radius as the originals... etc etc yada yada

cheers

If I remember correctly Fairfax County, VA (suburb of DC) decided to do away with these cameras - oddly, they discovered that the intersections where they had the cameras had an increase in accidents.

2006-02-23 12:19:07 PM
this is a joke. i'm sorry, but the more i think about it lately the more i'm against speed cameras, red light camera, and even farking parking meters/tickets.

they are all just another way for the state/city/whatever to tax you further with a minimal amount of effort on their part.

2006-02-23 12:21:08 PM
Cameras don't decrease moving violations.

Repeated tickets on my part and the thinning of my wallet has made me slow down in recent years. Writing tickets does get most people to slow down.

2006-02-23 12:21:16 PM
I wonder when the maricopa county residents will learn from the shining example thier fellow drivers show them on a daily basis. Isnt there something like one or two fatal crashes a day in the VALLEY? \Spent 6 years there, yall are mofukkin crazy, and ya drive like sh]t too! \ Nothin like watching a dad walking his kids home from school and soo drunk he cant walk let alone stop vomiting all over them and himself at 11:00 in tha mornin!

Next they'll make it illegal to wear a skimask in your own car.

True. And, from the article:
When the city can positively identify the driver, a citation is mailed directly to the driver's address. Otherwise, the city sends a notice of violation to the registered owner of the vehicle, requesting identification.

What happens if someone doesn't reply to this "notice"? Or replies with an "I don't know who that is in the ski mask in my car"?

2006-02-23 12:22:37 PM
dhudd: oddly, they discovered that the intersections where they had the cameras had an increase in accidents.

That's true. We have them around here too. People will slam on their brakes on a yellow light to avoid a ticket only to ger rear ended.

2006-02-23 12:22:55 PM
How funny. How the hell do they know who is driving the car?

2006-02-23 12:23:37 PM
The biggest issue I have is not the cameras themselves, but the corruption behind them. There has been many documented incidents where the red light cameras are installed and the yellow light period is decreased.

In addition with the red light cameras, it has been found that they have increased the number of accients - because people are slamming on the brakes when the light turns yellow to avoid the "yellow" light camera ticket.

It as found in most situations that the number of accidents were reduced by increasing the yellow light period.

Now with these speed cameras - how do you prove they were wrong? What happens when you are traveling 55 and they ticket you for doing 80? (This has already happened in England)

2006-02-23 12:24:08 PM
all you need is this:

http://www.beatthecamera.com/

this stuff overexposes your license plate when it takes a pic....

2006-02-23 12:25:07 PM
They can't be processed as anything more than a citation because the camera can't prove that the registered owner is the driver.

If the positions are fixed, and you're a local, it'll take you about 2 days to figure out when to brake.

We have photoradar here: see a new blue chevy truck on the side of the road with someone in the driver seat-->slow down.

2006-02-23 12:26:17 PM
jpbreon: If I remember correctly the cameras are set at an angle to capture both driver and plate in the shot. \I thought they had been doing this in phx for a while now!

2006-02-23 12:26:34 PM
whats the problem here? speeding=illegal - are we really complaining that the city is making money on something that they actually should have already been making money on in the first place - if you dont want the fine, go 72 (to account for margin of error of course) otherwise - drive as fast as you want and hope that the hourly rate you make at your job is worth the extra cost of driving faster...

2006-02-23 12:26:43 PM
Buy a plate guard, they cost about 30 dollars and now the camera will never know what your plate number was. Works great when travelling out of state since you know... your car will only pass by that area what.. once a year if that.

They also make devices that sit in your rear window and effectively blind the camera as well.

2006-02-23 12:27:02 PM
Hopefully they can get a clear picture of my brand new DUI license plates I intend to get from a few threads away.

2006-02-23 12:27:16 PM
from past articles i've read these type of cameras first collect money for the company that runs them until they are paid off in several years, then the money goes to the municipality. one odd thing i've noticed (i got a red light photo ticket one time) the price to argue it (court costs) is the exact same as the fine itself (at least in my area).

2006-02-23 12:27:37 PM
The only thing I don't like about this is the fact that a private company makes money off of traffic citations. Other than that, there really isn't any reason to be going any faster than the speed limit. Unless you're travelling a long distance without any stopping, the difference between 70 and 80 miles per hour only makes a few minutes difference.

If they really wanted to stop accidents, they would also do something about people driving 50 on the freeway also.

You should probably lose the presumptuous biatch act, especially if you are like that in real life.

I thought CT already had this on a section of either 95 or 84 b/w Hartford and NYC?

2006-02-23 12:29:57 PM
Those cameras are crap. Even assuming they get a picture of the driver, then there would be no way they would get a liscense plate (assuming you only have it on the rear of your car).

You know how this works. They will send out random tickets and hope people are too lazy or too unwilling to fight through the beaurocratic BS to avoid a ticket. It's SOP to send out random stuff and just hope they pay it. Sure, a few will fight it to the death, but a lot of people would just pay it so they don't have to deal with it.

Fatalities rise in speed camera hotspots
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/07/19/gatso_deaths_link/

+ USA Today
-"Cameras are the equivalent of hundreds of sets of eyes," Mayor Richard Daley said Thursday. "They are the next best thing to having police officers stationed at every potential trouble spot."
-The city is also considering allowing private companies to join the network, for a fee. Officials said the system size is nearly limitless.
-The linchpin in the network paid for with a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and scheduled to be up by March 2006 is software designed to detect "suspicious" activity.

When i went to driving school in scottsdale, the driving instructor said that a permanent speed camera they put on a surface street (Frank Lloyd Wright near Scottsdale Road) paid for itself IN THE FIRST DAY OF OPERATION.

Speeding? I'm thinking $peeding.

2006-02-23 12:31:25 PM
Why is everyone biatching about this? Why don't you just slow the fark down? Your fuel economy will improve and your wallet will thank you.

So buy a farking radar detector. Speed camera radar is always on. So if it goes off, hit the breaks...

unfortunately there are still dozens in fairfax dhudd... unless you mean they Will take them out, but haven't yet

2006-02-23 12:34:02 PM
even if it does work, this'll only nail people driving fast between ~10am and ~4pm. modest # of cars on the road -> system defeated.
and i can't see how a picture of the driver could also be captured at night. or in the rain.

oh BTW those license plate covers that are supposed to overexpose the photo have got to be red flag to a cop.

2006-02-23 12:34:45 PM
Just so we're all clear here - this has NOTHING to do with increasing road safety, and EVERYTHING to do with $$$.

carry on...
