Fred Phelps is a self-hating homosexual who is so ashamed of his sexual orientation that he tries to deflect attention from himself by protesting against the very thing he is. He thinks he projects an image that how can anybody that is so ardently against homosexuals be anything but a true, honest to God, red-blooded, heterosexual American male? However, he fails miserably.

el camino...i think you may be on to something. i'd like to see, though, their success rate in the courts. i would think that anybody willing to make take it to trial (i.e. not settle) would be validated by the jury. there is such a thing as "fighting words". if i walk up to a guy at a bar and tell him i just boinked his 12 year old daughter, no jury in the land is going to give me 100K after he knocks my block off.

The problem is... Phelps' ENTIRE FAMILY are lawyers. They file suits against EVERYONE, and multiple interlocking suits at that. So you are in court for years trying to get these asshats off your back. And his legal costs are low, while yours require retaining a lawyer. They're a menace.

I agree with the "barratry for profit" motive, I think they HAVE to do that to finance their expensive travel etc. And I think Phelps likes the "control" it gives him over others who consequently fear to criticize or thwart him.

As much as I truly detest this bullying, psychopathic piece of human garbage -- and seriously, if I read about Phelps getting beaten to death by enraged family members at one of these funerals, I'd be planning a generous donation to their legal defense fund -- I must agree with some of the other comments that the real way to hurt him is to ignore him.

He's one of those sick, pathologically insecure freaks who have an obsessive need for attention of any sort, regardless of whether it's positive or negative, and will make the most outrageous statements and engage in the most outlandish behavior to get it. We all know the type (e.g., Ann Coulter). When you give him attention, any kind of attention, you're just doing what he wants. When you get in his face and call him a hateful, un-Christian monster, he's winning.

What scares the shiat out of people like him is the thought of being invisible, of no longer being on the news and in the papers, of no longer being bashed by people like us on the Internet. His nightmare is everyone saying, "Fred who"?

I heard an intersting theory that this whole issue is an attempt by Iran and Syria to demoninze Denmark because the Danes are taking over the presidency of the Security Council and that both Iran and Syria will be called infrom of the Council soon over nukes and involvement in Syria.

I support all peoples religious beliefs and I think its a great crime when people subvert these beliefs for political gain.

I joined a few weeks ago and went on my first ride in NYC this past Saturday.

20-30 bikers showed up in sub-30 degree weather to honor Spc. Sergio Mercedes. Even Mike showed up. He's a PGR member who lives in NYC and doesn't own a car OR bike. He walked to the funeral home and the church.

Anyone can join the PGR. Support our troops! Honor our fallen heros.

I think it speaks to the amazing level of restraint and intelligence of the people attanding these funerals. I think they realise that he wants a confrontation and the best way to hurt him is to ignore him.

I'm in awe of these people. Imagine someone essentialy spitting in your face and mocking your loss and your loved one's sacrafice and turning the other cheek. Heroes indeed.

I think the same standards apply to all Americans. Why is it wrong to have the same standards for everyone? The statement that my disapproval as a christian of other people's actions, especially when they CLAIM to be christians, unless I manage to get on TV and protest is unreasonable and frankly, ridiculous.

As much as I am against the war, how dare they protest at a funeral. That is disgusting. You can be against the war and still support the troops. In fact, as a patriot, I think being against the war, and supporting the troops goes hand in hand.
