Irepo: I think if that were to happen now, it'd be different. I think more people are stepping up to people like this guy.

It's sad, you're right about that. But I think people would react different now...then 20 years ago. I think/believe we're growing as a nation.

We're certainly, at least, speaking up faster and louder!

I hope that you are right, but I'm not sure that you are. While I think in 20 years it may be different, right now the growth of the gay civil rights movement (not all by itself, but in significant part) has given rise to the revived religious right movement, national and state DOMAs, etc.

Hopefully we are growing, and these are just growing pains.

why do the Baptists hate America?

I believe I speak for many conservative Christians when I say this:

Phelps is a moron. Whatever you believe about homosexuality, standing at someone's funeral and screaming that the deceased are in Hell is NOT appropriate or Christian.

Whatever cause he espouses, his antics only hurt it.

What part of "Hate the sin, love the sinner," is he missing? What part of that is too hard for his wee little mind????

2006-02-21 08:29:36 AM
I can see protesting the war. but at at funeral? over that bs?
What the hell is wrong with these people

2006-02-21 08:29:39 AM
Shirley Phelps-Roper, a daughter of Fred Phelps and an attorney for the Topeka, Kansas-based church, said neither state laws nor the Patriot Guard can silence their message that God killed the soldiers because they fought for a country that embraces homosexuals.

How in the flying fark did that ignorant slut pass the bar exam?

RTFA. They (bikers) are invited by the family, and that is the only time they show. Now what were you saying?

2006-02-21 08:31:15 AM
To the few that say that this is just Phelps and his crew of genetic misfires practicing their right to "free speech":

What about the right of the grieving not to be harassed on what is one of the worst days of their life? What about the right not to have obscenities shouted at them?

I can only guess that the Phelps compound is heavily guarded and that they do not make trips into town without a bodyguard or two.

Great work!

I honestly can't believe how an asshat like Phelps can actually have followers who do these kind of things... he's obviously crazy, should be in a mental home some place.

2006-02-21 08:32:34 AM
Michael Moore should bring back "The Sodomobile"

Love him or hate him, one of the single greatest acts of filmed protest was on Moore's TV show "The Awful Truth"

On that episode, he got a group of VERY gay people to travel with him on a Pink RV that parked out in front of Fred Phelps' Protests. I won't go into details as to what he did then though, you gotta see it to believe it

You all support him and gave him the green light. You may say things like you do above but it is your support that drives him. Farking moran xians, this is start of the result of your hateful agenda. You will be stopped, reasonable people will stand against you soon.

2006-02-21 08:33:45 AM
Don't hate him. Pity him. And his followers. Pity them for their utter lack of respect, compassion, and anything decent in a human being. Pity them for being devoid of any sympathy and filled with self-loathing. Pity them for their eternity filled with hate and retribution for the pain and suffering they have caused to so many people.

Pity them and ignore them. They won't go away, but they will no longer have control of the one thing they value most. Fear. They intimidate with it and it's time it stopped.

The Guard are heroes. Most people would cringe at the sound of revving motorcycles at a funeral. But in this case, it's a joyful noise.

Rest assured, I do not consider that man to be affiliated with any religion but his own.

He has been doing this for so long (showed up at my friends funeral in the late 80s) that he his filled to the brim with hate and nothing else.

It used to bother me, now well, he's on the losing end that's for sure.
Good on the Patriot Guard bikers.

Those two guys next to Freddy boy in the pictures with the t-shirts that read " He's" "gay" are true heroes. Right after the biker dudes.

Fred Phelps does not believe what he is doing. This is a scam.

It's a business. They travel the country, set up wesites telling you exactly when they'll be there, and using the most inflammatory statements all over the place, just to get someone to violate their rights for profit. Then they sue the military, the police force that was to protect them, and everyone that is around them for money. This is a sham, and it is a trap to get people sued. Every member of his family is an attorney. Phelps does not break the law. What he does is try to make you break the law by trying to punch your sensibilities about everything you hold dear, and then sue you and everyone municipality around him to the max.

This is a scam.

Whether he believes his posters or not is irrelevent.
He's using this as a moneymaking scheme.
Lay one finger on him, do one thing that violates him, and he will sue you, and more importantly, the city, the police department, the US Military, and any private property owner he happens to be standing on to make money off of it.

Let's look at the ways he's trying to get you up in a tizzy to violate his civil rights for profit:
-He says G-d Hates fags, G-d hates the US Govt, that G-d hates the US Military, G-d Hates you, and G-d justifies the killing of others.
Phelps knows that saying 'G-d' and 'Hate' in the same sentence gets people worked up. He knows that. He knows that people have a knee jerk reaction to that.
-He says that the US Govt and the United States are evil.
This is another hot button with people who love their country. It is intentional. It is designed to make you take a swing at him. He wants 50k USD from you. He wants a powerball winner to swing at him so he gets 100 million dollars. It's that simple.
-He goes after homosexuals, he goes after people who are making sacrifices. Phelps intentionally targets people that are being victimized, or good people doing their jobs to create more outrage. He kicks people when they're down. He does that so someone will come up and defend them. Then he will sue you.
-His boards are laminated on hardwood, because he pulls them out of trucks at least five times a week. He also puts them in bright colors for attention, and makes absolutely sure that you can read them at all time. He's phishing you. Everyone must know that.

The most telling tale about all of Phelp's behavior is the schedule he keeps, and the company he keeps as well. The parties sometimes split up and go to two seperate state funerals to maximize the profitability of them. There are, at maximum, twelve members to the party. They never stay more than thirty minutes (I assume they realize that someone will do something to them the MOMENT they come out of the vans, and really, after that, they get their camera shots to cause the outrage for the next stop, and then they move on) to maximize their profits, because time is money, and really, they're not interested in the message, because they're just interested in the lawsuit.

See? They don't believe this stuff. If they did, they wouldn't have come to Coretta Scott King's funeral. Because in their doctrine, they don't believe that G-d hates black people who tried to promote Christianity. So why were they there? They were there to make a buck when someone slipped up. They were there to petition the police department for a right to protest, and if they didn't get it, take them to court over it.

Basically, Phelps is playing the Ken Lay, Karl Rove, "Smartest Man in the Room" game where he is willing to do anything (if it be lying or stealing, or telling you God hates you) to make himself rich and powerful. This is his scheme, and admittedly, it's clever, but just downright evil to promote so much hatred in the world.

Tell all your friends about this.
This man is a con artist, and he's not a man of religion whatsoever.

After all, he makes everyone around him a lawyer.
That should tell you right now he is not anything

I'm enjoying that the attempts to troll this thread are being deftly deflected by people not caring. The Internet is LEARNDING!!

On a topic-note, I can't imagine anyone being upset at what the bikers are doing. They aren't invading funerals, they are coming when asked to go. Great guys, the sort of heartwarming love from a stranger that reminds you people might not suck after all!

2006-02-21 08:35:56 AM
smeegle...passing the bar isn't THAT difficult...and most states let you take it over and over until you make it. it's practicing law that actually takes a brain (or at least half a brain). when you work for your imbicilic father for his fake church...well...let's just say that doesn't take a rocket scientist. i would love to see some of the law suits these idiots filed.

Good point. I wonder if they are posted on-line for public access.
Not really intrerested in taking thev time to look but, it would be interesting still.

el camino...i think you may be on to something. i'd like to see, though, their success rate in the courts. i would think that anybody willing to make take it to trial (i.e. not settle) would be validated by the jury. there is such a thing as "fighting words". if i walk up to a guy at a bar and tell him i just boinked his 12 year old daughter, no jury in the land is going to give me 100K after he knocks my block off.

Personally, I can't wait until the day of Phelps's funeral. I'll be there, waving a big smiley face flag and reminding his followers that God loves everyone.

IM SO THEIR ! Great farking idea man. psychonaut thig guys death, hopefuly long protracted & untimely, IS something to celebrate. I bet his children HATE him just as much as most of us do.

2006-02-21 08:44:23 AM
"Thank god for IEDs"??? Farking douchebag. I'm tempted to plant one right where he's going to be protesting. That'd be ironic, no? And better yet, after blown up, if pieces of Fred Phelps landed on someone gay. ULTIMATE IRONY!!

2006-02-21 08:44:42 AM
Story would be better if the words "out" and "protest" were not included in the headline.

2006-02-21 08:46:58 AM
Who's the hero to you guys on this one? I don't get it?

Is it Fred Phelps? He's the one against the war, right? You guys have proven that being anti-Bush and anti-War trumps any other belief or standing you find offending.

I'm going to guess from the standards already set that you guys are now hanging up posters of Fred Phelps next to Hugo Chavez.

Someone should start protesting at the funerals of his congregation.

smoovement: Is it Fred Phelps? He's the one against the war, right? You guys have proven that being anti-Bush and anti-War trumps any other belief or standing you find offending.

No, he claims to be religious so that prejudice trumps the first too. If he's just a dictator then he's okay. Knee jerking is a fine art.

2006-02-21 08:49:32 AM
IHateHipHop beat me to it, but since he failed to make the point, I'll finish it:

The scriptures are crystal clear that when God sets out to punish a nation, it is with the sword. An IED is just a broken-up sword, Phelps-Roper said. Since that is his weapon of choice, our forum of choice has got to be a dead soldiers funeral.

Ok. Scriptures are crystal clear. If an IED is a broken-up sword that isn't a sword, but a bomb, which has nothing to do with a sword, how is it crystal clear any longer?

The next thing would be the logical failure.

If A is the cause, B is the problem and C is the effect, the forum would not be C, the effect. The proper forum would be A, the IED, since the IED is what kills these soldiers as punishment from God, and B, the soldiers themselves.

So I suggest they all get some IEDs, protest in front of soldiers and if they accidentally detonate themselves while protesting...whoops.

That is not the case. I consider myself a fairly conservative Christian and I ABSOLUTELY support the bikers in this. They are definitely heroes, and I'd join them if I even knew how to ride a motorcycle. My father is a Vietnam veteran, and nearly died for this country - as many others did. I grew up around all sorts of war heroes. No matter what your belief is on the war, on homosexuality (I'd not even equate it with the war at all!), or anything at all - the troops themselves are dying and should have their lives be respected.

It'd be cool if my father would put it in his newspaper column, I will forward it to him anyway. These men are definitely heroes, it was an uplifting story to something that was really ugly.

While occasionaly contemplating mortality, I've wondered what I would do if I found out I had a terminal incurable illness.

My mission in life now, if I ever have leukemia, let's say, and it's incurable, is to find that man at one of his hatefests and put a shotgun in his face. I'd die happy knowing I had made this a slightly better place.

the signs could read "this is Gods punishment for blind hatred" How can bible bangers get away such selective interpretation. I mean, how many times in the Bible does is say that God is the only one that can judge us? Seems like people like Phelps and his gang of thugs have nothing better to do than kick someone when they are as down as you can get. Phelps and his blind followers are a buch of asshats and cowards.
