I paid $120 for a pair of running shoes, made by Adidas. Best $120 I ever spent.

Weren't NIKE and ADIDAS originally founded by two competing brothers in Bavaria. Both shoe plants were in the same town.

RTFA. Adidas was founded by two brothers, one of whom later left Adidas and founded Puma.

Nike was founded by Bowerman and Knight.

Actually, I think the history of those brands is pretty interesting. Are you supposed to buy Nikes and support third world sweatshops, or buy Pumas and Adidas to support Nazi-era capitalists?

2006-02-18 08:03:01 AM
I am curious. Can someone who practices in the patents area give us his/her assessment of the merits of this case? I have some questions: 1) how far does the patent reach (i.e: can I make a shoe with a "button" on it?) 2) what are the chances of this case being tied up in procedural limbo for the next few years, essentialy forcing a settlement, unless Nike gets an injunction? 3) can Nike win on the merits?

I just want to find a sneaker that isn't all brothered up. Some of us over 20 would like to go running without looking like one of the Icy Hot Stuntaz.

" Priced at $250, the adidas-1 contains a microprocessor and claims to be the worlds first computerised shoe."

Wonder how long before there's USB shoes.

New Balance = no sweatshops, great shoes. Also I'd recommend a Spanish shoe company called Camper.

2006-02-18 08:20:24 AM
And BTW, who are the Icy Hot Stuntaz

2006-02-18 08:23:44 AM
Also, New Balance has, check this out, more than one width!

As a 10.5EEEE, I completely understand you. As others have suggested, give New Balance a shot. A damned good shoe, a third of the cost and they make them in our width with actual support.

Because Nike is a proper name.

"Nike, named after the Greek goddess of victory"

I don't run much anymore, but I was always partial to Asics.

Oh, and Adidas is short for Adi Dassler, one of the founders. And yes, his brother (don't remember the name) founded Puma.

A Scot, Dunlop, invented air cushioning with the pneumatic tyre aaaages ago.

Nike will be trying to patent the shoe next.

19 patents covering a spring in a shoe? Hell, I fastened springs to my shoes back in '69. I claim prior art.

I was watching my DVD of "Aliens: Special Edition" just the other day and noticed that Ripley was sporting a pair of Reeboks just before she climbed into the loader before disembarking.

So I say, let Nike and Adidas fight it out, since it's pretty clear who's going to be the real winner a century from now.

If you ask me, both shoes look horrid. They really need to send those poor Asian kids to a design school or something.

So they filed in Texas - natural thing for an Oregon company to do. I think I read somewhere that there is a judge in some podunk town who gets cases like these because he lean's heavily in the favor of the company that files. I'm sure there's nothing going on under the table (nudge, nudge).

Those are hideous. It looks like a shoe only a 13 year old would like. Maybe thats their primary market now days

The only running shoes I've owned that were better than Adidas ClimaCools are my current pair of ASICS.

ASICS are so very comfortable. Better than New Balance IMHO.

//can't we all just get along?

I used to be a big supporter of Nike, I would always buy their top-of-the-line Super Air Max Whateverthefark It Was Called shoes, and about a decade after they came out with the air bubble things which had worked well up till then, I noticed a pattern with the latest shoes I was buying. Within three to six months, one of the air bubbles would get a leak and deflate, which was uncomfortable and probably not good for my feet and posture, but worse than that, usually it would squeak with every step. So I'd be walking down a hallway and it would be like "(step), (squeak), (step), (squeak), (step), (squeak)". And sometimes it would sound like a fart. After this happened with three pairs in a row, I decided I couldn't be replacing a $100 pair of shoes this often, and said goodbye to Nike. This was shortly before they came out with Shox, so it probably works differently now, but that was enough for me.

Maybe it's because as an eight-year-old white girl from Long Island I bought my first Run DMC album and was subconsciously influenced to buy Addidas, but I have stuck with them ever since. And I think they fit my feet better.
