For those of us still sticking by our Atari 2600 where the graphics are all stick figures and different shades of grey, could someone please explain this gobbledygook? The guy is flying around and sticking things to the ball?

I love Katamari Damacy. I walk around all day and am like "man, I could totally roll up that parking meter, actually this whole row of parking meters, then that hydrant, then that woman and baby stroller, then that go-kart..."

/Waiting for Katamari III, in which you rather than making a star out of the things you roll up, the King of the Cosmos decides to smoke the katamari instead.

I want to marry Katamari and have its sticky ball babies.

I'm totally lame and not in the know. Can anyone tell me what the hell this is supposed to do??

This game's a little weird, but it's a derivative of possibly the greatest PS2 game on the planet, Katamari Damacy, and its sequel We Love Katamari, from Namco.

i25.photobucket.com

See that thing? It's a katamari. Basically, in this game, you roll a katamari around. It's a ball that's sticky or it has gravity or something such that anything that smaller than the katamari will stick to it (bigger stuff will bounce off). So, you start out rolling up small things like tic tacs, thumbtacks, then as your katamari gets bigger you roll up bigger stuff like people, cars, etc, until you're eventually rolling up like skyscrapers, parking complexes, etc.

The idea is that the King of the Cosmos got drunk one time and destroyed all the stars, so you need to make new ones by rolling stuff up on Earth.

The game's crazy fun with an addictive soundtrack.

I got so hooked playing Katamari at a friend's house, I ended up buying a PS2 specifically to play this game. I've expanded the library since, of course, but Katamari is awesome.

This 2-D version is just a funny parody, not indicative of the actual game itself.

Sparhawk

Thanks for the explanation. The 8bit version is semi fun for a bit, but I can definately see how the PS2 one is fun (definately innovative!).

Oh man, I got shunned by my work filter. I so love Katamari too.

Maybe I should roll my boss up in a rug and hit him with axe handles to the sweet melodic sounds just for old times sake.

I can't possibly imagine how this game, as described, could be addictive. Is there anything more to it than rolling your ball around and picking stuff up? Is the scenery good? Does the stuff you pick up do anything special? What happens when you're bigger than everything? Is there a challenge to rolling over stuff? Is there any way to lose stuff from your ball, or stuff to avoid?

2006-02-17 03:02:54 PM
its it just me over does it go on auto-pilot after a while?

Original Katamari Damacy = freaking sweet

This 2D version = total garbage

What a disservice to a truly original and fun game. I wonder how many people will never play the real version due to this turd.

2006-02-17 03:03:45 PM
My son was laughing hysterically just now, playing this 2D version with me...thanks, submitter! Teh funny!

Hello Mr. Sunshine!
La, la la-la la la la Katamari Damacy
La, la la-la la la la Katamari on the swing!

...

Also, the song from the first one that goes "Let's roll up to make a single start in the sky" kicks ass.

2006-02-17 03:05:09 PM
Can someone explain the gist of the game?

It looks like you move the head around and the ball follows while you picking up more and more things. Is that the only way to control it? When it gets too big and hits me, I stick and them I am screwed. Is part of the point of the game avoiding that?

2006-02-17 03:05:49 PM
Ah, the only original game for the PS2, ever!

/at least thats what it seems like

You usually have to reach a certain size within a time limit, although there are variations on that goal. There are some funny sound effects when you pick up some items, and yes you can lose items by running into a larger object at too high of a speed.

Really, it must be played to be truly appreciated.

yeah, I've seen people play a different version and it looks pretty cool. I can't figure out the point of this one. . .

Yeah, this was really poor in comparison to the awesome of the original. Plus, stuff falls off your katamari way too easy in this version. Still, the MIDI-ized music from the game is cool.

I love the t shirt with a picture of the prince and says "this is how I roll"

There's pretty good, if somewhat polygonal scenery - and an awesome soundtrack. Increasing the size of your Katamari allows you to visit areas you wouldn't be able to get to otherwise, and yes, you can lose stuff off your Katamari if you bump into things too large for you.

That happened to me, too. I think because I managed to roll up the King himself.

lame crap

Aww, I'm sorry. perhaps you will complain about this on your MySpace page, you farking elitist. I hate the rise of the 'Mr. Internet Cooler-Than-You' - it is one of the reasons I stay away from most message boards.

*ahem*

HOW TO PLAY THIS AWESOME GAME (from me):

Pick a number of princes to start.

You are the king.

The Prince(s) follow you.

Pick up stuffs to get bigger. A large enough Katamari can pick YOU up, and go on 'autopilot'.

Click to 'explode' everything off of the katamaris.

Eventually, you will be picked up yourself, silly king!

SECRETS:
- When the ball gets big enough, it will pick up the ground, for a nice surprise!
- Click the tip of the 'number of princes' pyramid to get a 48-prince game!

MOHWowbagger: I can't possibly imagine how this game, as described, could be addictive.

I couldn't either, and put off buying it for a pretty long stretch. Two minutes into the first real stage after training and it had me for life. It's a bit like pac-man in the totally illogical potential for addiction.

/Everyone except Christians and Cops loves them some Katamari. You're not one of 'them', are you?

Like I said above, I await the second sequel, in which, rather than making a star out of the katamari, the King of the Cosmos decides to smoke it instead.

/This katamari tastes sort of AUTOMOBILE-Y

I can't possibly imagine how this game, as described, could be addictive.

Don't knock it till ya try it!

Is there anything more to it than rolling your ball around and picking stuff up?

Nope, that's generally it.

Is the scenery good?

It depened on what your definition of "good" is. If it involves a sense of realism, then no. But it's good in a cartoony sort of way.

Does the stuff you pick up do anything special?

not really. The animals make good funny effects though when they are rolled up!

What happens when you're bigger than everything?

You roll up bigger things - clouds, rainbows, entire islands. The game has no infinite mode so usually by the time you're rolling up things this big, you're nearing the end of your time limit.

Is there a challenge to rolling over stuff?

Absolutely! You can only pick up things that are smaller than your katamari. And some of the challenges in the game involve not only trying to make the biggest katamari you can, but picking up only certain types of objects, or making yourself big enough to only pick up ONE type of object (cow pylons anyone?)

Is there any way to lose stuff from your ball, or stuff to avoid?

Yep, if you hit something that is moving and is larger than your katamari, you will lose stuff. You want to avoid anything larger than your katamari.
