AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

STOP IT!!!

American football: Great game. Every play is carefully planned and executed. Lots of tactical play. Hard hitting action.

Football (as in FIFA): Great game. Fluid motion. Strategic play. A single moment of individual genius can have a profound impact on the game. A crap team can beat a great one on a good day.

They are two completely different sports. Stop saying that because one is great in one way the other must naturally suck donkey balls.

Incidentally, I'm not saying this. Many other games share greatness with American football. I'm just saying that soccer isn't one of them, becuase it is boring and sucks.

What is it with you soccer haters?

Can anyone explain it to me?
Some kind of inferiority complex because only a minority of the world's population gives a shiat about AF? Is it because you are not dominant in this sport? Is it because you hate sports in general because you never excelled in it?
Is it because soccer is regarded as a sport for kids in the US?
I think there's a lot of misconception about soccer in the US. Not physical, no tactics, no scoring... pretty lame thinking.

I personally like watching AF now and then but I wouldn't take a Simpsons episode as my guide to the world. It seems like most of the anti-soccer farkers do so.

Aussie rules football is an insanely manly game. For those who don't know, it's played on a field the size of mars and jumping 6 foot in the air is not considered skillful, so much as a great excuse for the other team to grab your ankles and smash your face into the pitch. Then piss on you.

Seriously.

I think I've explained it pretty well, if in too many posts. It has *nothing* to do with American football, baseball, curling, or any other sport, at least in my case. Its not nationalism-by-proxy or anything. Soccer is just a terribly boring sport, to the point of it being comical to me that anyone finds it remotely entertaining to play or, worse yet, spectate.

The reason the names have changed is all to do with sponsorship and tv rights.

The Premiership was set up, and the top 20 teams in the country were invited to take part, and the TV rights were sold to Sky (Fox).

Then someone else decided to get in on the act and set up the Championship. The next 20 top teams were invited to that. This nearly fell apart as the ITV Digital group that were funding this went bust, and all TV money was nearly lost.

So the original Divisions 1,2,3,4 didn't really get renamed, just superceded.

... And give the American Football vs Football arguments a rest. They're both great games in their own right, just very different. It's like comparing Squash with Downhill Skiing... they're too different to compare, and the only similarity is that the american game used the word Football in it's title....

It's a pointless argument!!

/coz we all know the european game is MUCH better!!!

At last count there was *2* comments about the actual article, which I did not read, either.

I played soccer for years. Fun to play, not really that engrossing to watch.

I occasionally watch football, but the Texans suck so bad - it's not very entertaining to watch your home team get stomped every single game (my dad's college team went 0-14 a couple years ago. He had season tickets. U of Houston)

Far & away the most boring "sport" to watch: Fishing. They have like 4 hour blocks of the stuff on certain channels. Actually, golf comes in a close second. Nascar, a close 3rd. All are fun to participate in (if you can get your hands on a nascar car), but boring as hell to watch.

Glad you said that.

Now that the AF/soccer bashing is over:

Let's flame about what is the better team. It's time to warm up for the World Cup!
I say Argentina are tops. Tevez just got elected best player in the Brazilian league and that means a lot cos there's a deep rivalry between ARG and BRA. Brasil itself is doing fine either and the Czech Republic are on their final run before many players will retire. I hope for an African team to advance at least to the quarter finals and I doubt that my fellow Germans will have a chance to repeat what they did last time or at the Confed Cup...

Soccer is boring to watch if you don't know anything about it. It's even more boring if you sit there saying "oh my god this is boring" over and over and over...

Football is NOT boring if you can:

1) Appreciate individual skill
2) Appreciate a team working together to adapt to a constantly changing situation
3) Appreciate the ebb and flow of a good battle
etc, etc...

Try taking an alien who doesn't know anything about american football (or an alzheimer's sufferer) to a 4 hour game without explaining the rules to them, who the players are, why any of it matters and maybe they'll get some excitement out of the violence that occurs once every 3 minutes or so. You could use that to proove that AF is less boring, but the truth is that to someone who knows just a little about either game there's a lot of entertainment and excitement to be gained.

"Soccer is just a terribly boring sport, to the point of it being comical to me that anyone finds it remotely entertaining to play or, worse yet, spectate"

Boredom is the product of a dull mind. I guess it's difficult to enjoy something if you can't understand it.

mrexcess clearly has a problem with football (soccer). Can we just agree that the problem is his and is not shared by the several billion people who enjoy the game and leave it at that? Cheers.

mrexcess: Soccer is just a terribly boring sport, to the point of it being comical to me that anyone finds it remotely entertaining to play or, worse yet, spectate.

Ok. You got me. That's some argument. Now that I think about it: all the years of playing it myself, the many times I went to the stadium, cheered for my team or watched them win or going down on television...
The passion that takes place when your team loses (like Bayern -ManU) or wins in a heart beat penalty shoot out (like GER-ENG in 90' or 96') was all in vain because it is actually a boring sport.

Thank you for opening my eyes, mrexcess, and your profound analysis.
I was so wrong about it.

I fall in the category of Americans who can't understand why soccer is so popular. There seems to be a certain tolerance in soccer that faking injuries is acceptable and should be encouraged. I've tried watching soccer matches and inevitably it seems that every couple minutes a player gets tripped up and falls to the ground acting as if he was shot, only to be up and running around as if nothing happened two minutes later after the referee has issued a yellow card to the guy that tripped him up. You see a little of this in hockey, but nowhere near to the degree you see it in soccer because hockey players are skating around with weapons in their hands and will use them on another player if he thinks he is trying to draw a call. I also don't care for the continuously running clock in soccer, the "injury time" at the end of a half seems to be purely at the referee's discretion and leads me to believe that a corrupt referee could cut the game short by a minute or two instead of accurately enforcing the extra time.

The other problem I have with soccer is that fans seem to feel the need to shove down non-soccer fan's throats how great their sport is. I don't really give a flying fark how great your sport is, I've tried watching it dozens of times and I'm done trying. I won't force you to like American sports and you can stop trying to force me to like your Euro sports, ok?

/NFL refs even more corrupt than soccer refs

mjoven1975 - sure, we won't shove how great football is down your throat, provided that you endevour to stay away from places that there is a small risk that people might be discussing how great football is. For instance: football threads on message boards.

How does that sound?

isador--I didn't realize that non soccer (not football) fans weren't allowed on this board. Isn't there a Euro Fark you can go to? If you don't like the viewpoints of Americans on an American message board, perhaps you would be better suited to go to a Euro board and discuss soccer without the fear of somebody disagreeing with you. I said I didn't like soccer and I gave a couple of examples why, did I tout the greatness of American sports?

2006-02-17 07:14:47 AM
mrexcess: But I still don't understand what on earth the attraction is with that sport.

I understand.
Maybe it's because I was brought up with it. Being a German, soccer is an integral part of our society (which goes for most of the European countries).

It was not easy to recover from the War and in '54, when our team won the World Cup for the first time, it was a feeling of "alright, we are back". There's a lot of fun poking among nations in Europe and football is something that is a bit more serious. You couldn't believe what the tabloids write about each other countries. Germany-Netherlands, England-Germany, or beyond Europe Argentina-England, or Argentina-Brazil.
Having said that, football is always connected to joy or tears. In the European leagues, you can degraded to the second division when you are on one of the last 3 spots. So there's also a lot of pressure to avoid that. It's not like in the US. You are the worst team therefore you have the right to draw the best college player.

It's a matter of socialisation and for soccer fans soccer is great. There are sometimes games that are boring beyond my mind. No doubt about it. But that's not the rule. Especially in league play draws can be fatal or helpful.

In Spain or in Italy there are daily newspapers just for soccer. And not just one of them.
There's a lot of passion about it, and if you don't just want to be obnoxious, you should try to accept that there are a lot of people who just love the game.

You should fancy a trip to a good game once you come over to Europe.

mjoven1975 - And did I say you DID tout the greatness of American Sports? Fish and Chip on your shoulder?

Non-soccer lovers are more than welcome I guess - I never commented on who was welcome, it's not my board.

Was just offering you a piece of friendly advice - Instead of coming on a thread that's discussing how great a sport is and then complaining about how you hate having people say how great said sport is. Just stay away from that thread, and avoid having anything, including that massive chip on your shoulder, shoved down your throat.

Surely that's simple enough to make sense?

2006-02-17 07:31:03 AM
mjoven1975: I didn't realize that non soccer (not football) fans weren't allowed on this board. Isn't there a Euro Fark you can go to?

His point is: if you don't like the sport, you most probably have nothing of value to add except for that you don't like it. So what's your point of taking part in a discussion of a topic you despise? Could you explain that to me? Or is it that you just want to drive people up the wall?
Or do you want American threads to be soccer-free?

This isn't the first time a Scottish judge has allowed criminals to miss court for a football match in Spain. How else did the 9 million (and rising) Celtic fans get to Seville for the UEFA Cup final a couple of years ago?

2006-02-17 07:37:01 AM
meh, if the judge doesn't think he's a flight risk, which at 17 for a car theft I doubt he is, why not. he'll serve his time. who cares if it's a month later than sooner (the sentencing - not time served). I'm also inclined to believe (I can be wrong) he's a first time offender otherwise the judge wouldn't agree to this.

I frankly don't give a rats arse about football, I only support Celtic because my old man does. The only games I even try and watch are the old firm games.

But more importantly, why the fark did the sherrif allow an adjournment so the little bastard could go to a football game? That's the sort of thinking that really pisses me off. Want to be free to watch the huns? Stop stealing cars

That's what you think. I, and most of my other sports-loving friends, find on the other hand most American sports EXTREMELY boring. From American football, baseball to those silly American-style motorsports that involve only riding in circles, also basketball etc., they are all just boring to me and I cannot watch even 5 minutes of it. When I was in the US I have even tried learn the rules so that I might find it more attractive, but to no avail, all those sports bored me to death. The only mainly American sport I do enjoy is Ice-hockey maybe.

It is probably just what you grow up with.
