Except that you have to download the program yourself, uncompress the file, run the program, and then type in your admin password. I would hardly call that a farking virus.

i'm sure this will be the only one...

good luck my mac farkers.

Voluntary downloads are how most malware gets there on Windows...

Yeah, that pretty much sums up how most viruses spread, a user clicks something they shouldn't, even though they have been warned several thousand times before not click on that thing.

Mac viruses don't have the special "assistance" provided ActiveX, though.

No, they've got the special "assistance" provided by dashboard widgets.

Huh? Dashboard Widgets don't have the ability to execute code across applications. What are you talking about?

I'm gonna learn to preview one day, though.

The whole "Open safe files after downloading" thing being on by default, it's risky because "safe" files aren't always safe. One of the avenues of exploitation was dashboard widgets, I think Apple has a click-through confirmation now, but javascript has security problems discovered all the time, and other "safe" files have a high potential for problems.

What I'd like to know is whether or not this is the direct result of having moved their processor chips to the Intel platform? I betcha it is.

/If I met a person who claimed to have written virus software I would farking torch his home and beat his dog.

Mac-hating? Mac's are too insignificant to hate. They're like the French of the PC world.

That seems unlikely, given that it targets PowerPC.

latestpics.tgz??

Whoever opens a .tgz file deserves a farking worm. Moron.

2006-02-17 01:46:34 AM
MonkeySwitch: "Whoever opens a .tgz file deserves a farking worm. Moron."

That would be unfortunate, given that it's probably the second most popular format (after .zip).

2006-02-17 01:53:28 AM
The big archive formats are .zip, .tgz (aka .tar.gz), .rar, and (on Mac) .dmg. The most dangerous thing about .tgz files is that they can store UNIX permissions, but .dmg's can do that too.

"Yeah, that pretty much sums up how most viruses spread, a user clicks something they shouldn't, even though they have been warned several thousand times before not click on that thing."

Um, no, that describes how a trojan spreads.

Things that say they're one thing, but then, when you run them, do another thing, are trojans.

Things that spread without humans helping, and infect executable files, are viruses.

These definitions have been in place since the 1980s (at least), but maybe the lack of memory (or neurons) in the media and elsewhere will lead to them all being grouped together at some point.

Admittedly, this one does allegedly add a stub of code to all executables on the system, which might then cause other systems to have problems if those executables were copied over to them (although I can't envision why this would happen, 99.999% of the time).

Don't Intel chips have that feature on them that allows them to deny certain code the ability to execute if the OS is programmed to support that feature? So if something is attempting to do something it's not, the processor actually won't let it do it?

2006-02-17 04:54:18 AM
Isn't this the like the 5th "first virus aimed at macs" story you've heard of too?

2006-02-17 05:30:55 AM
I don't use a Mac, (although I have nothing against them, I'd buy one if I could, and I intend on installing OSX86 next time I reformat) so excuse me for being in the dark on this one, but:

Are there even antivirus products available for the Mac? (I'm talking about from the big players, aka Symantec, Mcafee or even Apple themselves, none of that free-download weaksauce.)

2006-02-17 05:56:02 AM
Yes, you can install Norton on a Mac. I know that for sure. What I don't know is why anyone would choose to install Norton on any system.

2006-02-17 07:03:17 AM
So that is 1 (sort of) for the mac...
1,000,000 and counting for windows...
Think I will stick with the mac

2006-02-17 07:09:17 AM
Things that spread without humans helping...
Sounds like a worm.

Don't Intel chips have that feature on them that allows them to deny certain code the ability to execute if the OS is programmed to support that feature?
That feature is to stop buffer-overflow vulnerabilities. (basicaly exploiting a flaw in one program to execute commands in the memory space of another)

Theres a few hundred for OSX and a few thousand for XP. Sounds about right considering the comparative market share.

2006-02-17 07:45:14 AM
But, but, but Clinton windows..........

2006-02-17 08:22:08 AM
"Theres a few hundred for OSX and a few thousand for XP."

Actually, no, there's not. There's about 2-3 so-called "proof of concept" experimental thingamabobs for OS X and well over 70,000 for Windows (granted, about 2/3 of those don't affect XP).

Hey now!

You Mac fans-- Don't be hatin' on the Windows!

I've made some damn good money over the years cleaning up/repairing infected Windows machines.

Just this week I made $150 for less than 3 hours work cleaning up and reconfiguring a couple of Dell boxes.

I haven't made a damn cent off of Macs. If everybody had Macs, where would I get my "hookers and blow" money?

/runs Gentoo linux
//still trying to get sound to work on my new AMD64 motherboard with Nvidia chipset.
///been fighting the damn thing for days.
////but, hey, that makes me 1337. Or something.

??? Would imagine a lot of Farkers, esp. the FarkoPhotoshoppers, LOVE their Macs.

Except that you have to download the program yourself, uncompress the file, run the program, and then type in your admin password.

Yes, and people will do it. And they will do it happily, with the reasoning: their computer told them to.

/people are stupid

2006-02-17 10:35:22 AM
So, you're saying if I give a program my admin password, bad things can happen? Who could have guessed?

And MonkeySwitch, you seem to have a strong grasp of archive formats. Thanks for commenting.

Mac virus writers make virues that are user friendly and with beautiful interfaces.

/mac user

2006-02-17 10:42:42 AM
Would this be covered by Applecare?

2006-02-17 10:58:42 AM
This is not a virus. This is a 'unintended software function' which adds a new, dynamic experience to being a Mac owner! Macs allow for spontaneous excitment that help their owners further their pair-bonding with their favorite household applicance!

\thought about buying a Mac, but didn't want to have to wear the requisite black turtleneck and berret

I'd love to see an anti-virus program on a Mac.

Scanning for virii - 0 of 0 found.

2006-02-17 11:27:23 AM
I've always held the belief that the number of problems that a certain thing has is directly proportional to its popularity. That's why there are hundreds of thousands of viruses for Windows(it's ungodly popular) compared to linux (small user base but extremly loyal). This would just show that Macs aren't invincible from vandels, just not cared about as much.
/Go big or go home

waste of time to write virii for macs. No one uses them. lol

2006-02-17 11:47:41 AM
That could just be cuase they are Dells

That's odd, my Dell has only had one problem in four years, and that problem was fixed and payed for by Dell itself within one day.

Or maybe it's just because I actually know HOW to maintain my computer instead of puring beer over it and wondering why it's not working.

/The worst problem with my laptop is WinXP

Well done.
You are one of the few people who own Dells and know what they are doing.

But My point stands that Dells have crappy ass hardware.

True - but if you have a good warranty set up, they'll send you a free replacement within a day.
