oh the adorable little scamps. Honestly, taping their mouth shut is pretty mild.
2006-02-16 08:23:16 AM
Having both parents as teachers, I always heard the horror stories about brats that aren't disciplined at home, and it carries over into the classroom.

If the parents think that children should be disciplined at home, then that's long as it's done. Those kids evidently need to learn a little respect for their teachers.

I really hope this lady isn't fired. Granted, she probably could've handled it differently, but without having been there, I'm not saying it was completely out of line.

Good luck to her. Seriously.

It was SCOTCH tape for God's sake. If my kids were acting up like that, I'd be applauding the teacher, and then I'd bust their butts when they got home.

I hope she gets her job back.

SpillyFarker: It was SCOTCH tape for God's sake.

Still, things have gotten out of hand lately with how tight the leash is around teachers' necks. They can't do hardly anything without getting reprimanded. It's definitely not like when most of us were growing up.
2006-02-16 08:32:42 AM
It's not as if it were duct tape. I'd have something to say about duct tape. But scotch tape? These people are obviously at unawares about how weak scotch tape really is.
2006-02-16 08:39:20 AM

It was SCOTCH tape for God's sake.

No kidding. If it had been duct tape, I could understand the outrage. But Scotch tape? I think my teacher may have done that to me a couple of times. No wonder kids are so farked up these days. We give any teacher who tries to discipline them the smackdown.

"I don't think that somebody else should discipline one's child," said parent Marisol Monilato. "It's up to the parents."

If someone's little "darlings" are preventing the rest of the class from learning anything, they need to be disciplined.
2006-02-16 09:38:16 AM
Geez, you use DUCT tape coated with contact cement. Problem solved.
2006-02-16 01:38:16 PM
That's a paddlin'.
2006-02-16 02:00:51 PM
Can we not keep kids after school any more? Send them to the office to get them the hell out of your class? You know, goddamn near anything that they did when I was growing up? I'm only 28 fark ryan out loud... did things change that quickly?
2006-02-16 03:07:17 PM
All schools need to have the nun's I had and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel to dish out discipline. They would get in line...
2006-02-16 03:07:54 PM
My personal children go to that school

2006-02-16 03:08:16 PM
Becomming a parent not only sucks the life and money out of you, but also your brain cells.

Kids suck. They should get asswhoopins daily.
2006-02-16 03:08:27 PM
What ever happened to sending the offenders to the principal's office?

Let the teacher continue teaching the kids who are ready to learn, and let the administration deal with the troublemakers. If that classroom is hellish, the teacher and subs deserve more support from their admins.

The day I let my child get hit by a Papist teacher....

Teachers cant do shi-at anymore. Not without Mummy and Daddy suing the bejeezus out of them.

Then they get ripped for NOT controlling the kids when they start groping each other or passing out pills.

This is the ONLY thing I'm with the teacher's unions on.

2006-02-16 03:09:02 PM
I had a teacher in the 6th grade do the same thing to a few of the students. It was all laugh and joking. (Actualy if I remember correctly she recomended it and handed them the tape, they did it themselves)

Just over reactive parents.
2006-02-16 03:09:17 PM
"I don't think that somebody else should discipline one's child," said parent Marisol Monilato. "It's up to the parents."

And yet the parents certainly do not want to be disturbed at work by a teacher calling to let them know what little precious has done.
2006-02-16 03:10:29 PM
If they were my kids, I'd have thanked the teacher profusely. Then I would've used electrical tape once they got home.
2006-02-16 03:10:43 PM
Not that it really matters, but it's six (not five) substitutes in eight days.

Article:"They talk about mistreatment. We had six subs in eight days," said Lovett. "I think that's mistreatment."
2006-02-16 03:11:11 PM
"My Personal children..."????

What the hell is that? As opposed to your public children?

Going back to read the rest of tfa...

This kind of shiate is precisely the reason I quit teaching three years ago after having only taught for four. Teaching is not the same profession that it used to be (both my parents are teachers so I have some frame of reference.) I'm just glad I got out when I did. If you even look at a kid the wrong way in class, the parents are scheduling a conference with the administation asking for your ass on a platter. I agree with the fact that discipline should start in the home, but when it's non-existent there, you are asking for trouble.

/Rant over

Yeah, compulsory education with little choice in schooling really sucks.

Let the money follow the KIDS. If a district is spending $15000 per kid at a subpar school, let them take that money to some other school. Have competition in public schooling. And also give the schools the right to kick out students. Worst-case-scenario, the kids have to make shoes for Nike. That's their problem for getting kicked out of school.

"If she can't control it, I think they need to do something," said parents Priti Shukla.

Marisol & Priti AKA the parents of the little dick gobblers who ruin other kids' learning experience.
2006-02-16 03:13:46 PM
just pummel these kids and their parents into submission
2006-02-16 03:14:16 PM

What ever happened to sending the offenders to the principal's office?

That doesn't work anymore. At my school, the principal and assistants are all about "love the problem away". They come back into the class 5 minutes later even louder and bragging about the fact that they didn't have to face discipline.

You can't do ANYTHING to get children to be quiet if they aren't disciplined at home. I got in trouble for saying "shut up" once. And this was after I had repectfully requested quiet four times!
2006-02-16 03:14:22 PM
As a tutor to younger children, I believe her actions were out of desperation. Kids are so numb that anything other than physical action really can't reach them. Their home lives are so farked up that they've learned to block practically everything out. It takes an action like taping their mouths shut (which in this case was hardly anything at all) to get some semblance of structure through to them. Maybe if parents realize what it takes to get their children in line at school they'll try it at home.

My mom is a teacher and on one parent-teacher night a parent came storming in and read my mom the riot act for giving her precious boy a D-. After the tirade my mom calmly pulled out her grade book and showed the mother that her little angel had only passed in 6 of the 50 homework assignments that semester. The mother of course had no idea.
2006-02-16 03:15:07 PM
back in my country teachers used to beat the kids...and we all grew up pretty good.. no disrespect, no cursing, fighting, nothing... they need to bring back corporal punishment.
2006-02-16 03:15:13 PM
Seriously, parents need to return to using physical discipline it works, when I was a child if I mouthed off to one of my parents I would get a slap in the mouth. As a result I had respect for all adults because I didnt know if they would slap me aswell.
2006-02-16 03:16:07 PM
Ya rly. Parents are the damn problem. If your little brat had been disciplined and taught how to behave by his parents, teacher wouldn't need to tape his mouth shut.
2006-02-16 03:16:12 PM

My thoughts exactly. I think this is an instance of a person trying to insert an adjective or adverb that they think makes them sound smarter. Happens a lot with "literally."
2006-02-16 03:16:21 PM

What ever happened to sending the offenders to the principal's office?

Can't do that any more. You might hurt their feelings, and we can't have any of that.
2006-02-16 03:17:01 PM
The schools website is farked.

If a teacher gets so frustrated with my kid's attitude that he/she has to tape his mouth shut, he's gonna have hell to pay when he gets home. Then I'll call the teacher and thank him/her. Then, I'll send him in to school with a roll of duct tape, on the off chance that tape is needed again.
2006-02-16 03:17:11 PM
The article doesn't say if her tactic worked. Did the kids shut up? I need closure here!

The nuns back at my grade school use to wield rulers like swords. Scotch tape...-pfff-, try getting slapped by 12 inches of wood on the side of the face.

/...umm...let me re-word that.../
2006-02-16 03:19:45 PM
are you kidding me??

my mom would send us to school with our own tape if we acted like that.

Can't stand what is happening to this world.

all the parents who complain that the teachers are too rough on their kids, ought to do mandatory teaching time to see what the teachers are up against. let's see them handle it any better!
2006-02-16 03:19:57 PM
This is farking stupid. Nothing is wrong with this teacher... it's these parents I'm worried about. Obviously they have not taught their children proper respect, and busting teachers for this kind of thing sends the wrong message. Next we're gonna have teachers being busted for the old 'write their name on the board' trick, cuz it's humiliating. Duh, that's the point! How are the kids expected to learn anything in this situation? I took my kids out of the public school and put them in a Lutheran school for this very reason... the other kids were out of control and the teachers' hands were tied. Now they're in a place where if they fark up, the teachers can put the fear of God on their sorry little ass... much better :)

/Jesus would probably tape the little bastards mouth shut too... or call in daddy to deal with them!
//This is the reason why kids are graduating from high school without knowing how to read or write

I think her personal children are her own children, to be distinguished from her schoolchildren. She just phrased it awkwardly. Should have used "own", maybe.

Should have used duct tape.

Six subs in eight days is probably normal -- in my town (which is far from this one, admittedly) substitute assignments go out early every morning and they're basically first come, first served.

So IMO it's likely they got six subs just because a different one was called every morning, not because the students chased them away.

"My Personal children..."????

What the hell is that? As opposed to your public children?

Going back to read the rest of tfa...

I would guess that means the children she conceived, versus the children she teaches everyday.

Should have been an "and" between your names. Sorry.
2006-02-16 03:22:04 PM
This is the problem with America... no one wants to take responsibility for anything. The farking parents comments just make me wanna go there and smack them around. They just brush it off and blame the school for their kids being stupid little brats. My anger also pertains to the people and groups who blame violent video games on school shootings and all. I GREW UP PLAYING ALL SORTS OF CRAZY, VIOLENT, SICK GAMES AND I TURNED OUT NORMAL... WHY? Because I was tough what good and what is bad... My PARENTS tought me about good and evil. So I knew how to tell whats reality and whats makebelieve. If I ever hear a parent blame anything but themselves on their kid's behavior, I seriously will give them a farking lecture infront of everyone and possibly end up biatch-slapping them a couple times for effect.
2006-02-16 03:22:36 PM
Heh, I ran rampent over my school as a child. However, I did this full well knowing if I got myself in trouble my mom was going to take it out of my hide.
Did it make me a "good" kid? Nope.
Did it stop me from being distruptive? Damned skippy it did.

/Bring back the ruler
