While I am not for ripping of the tax payers, I've got to say, since about half my family was homeless thanks to Katrina (and a big THANKS to those who helped out!),
so many people are still without basic things, and are in need of funds, due to the fact that mortages still must be met on homes unsafe to live in, and car payments have to be made on undrivable cars..
I'm willing to let some of my tax money go to MREs they can sell on Ebay.
If somebody is jonesin' for a little bottle of tabasco, and past by date M&Ms... let them pay somebody who has to make the car payment or have what little bit of credit they have left go to heck..

I have a box of MREs from a friend in the National Guard. 10 meals. Great for camping trips as an 'emergency meal'

Actually, they don't suck at all. They have everything you could possibly need for a meal. Entre, snack, desert item, packet with Coffee, Tea or Kool-Aid-type mix, gum, TP, salt/pepper/sugar/cream, condiments, spork and even an packet that heats the entree by just adding water.

Pretty cool stuff. Lasts for-freakin'-ever.

My sister gave me a bunch of MREs in '99. The next year we had a wicked ass ice storm that knocked out the power for almost two days. Those MREs came in handy since I was in college and didn't have much food in the apartment and all the stores in town were closed. The pouch that you mix with water for heat and the mini Tobasco bottles rocked. The chicken and rice combo was pretty good. Tuna and noodles...the mini bottle of Tobasco saved that mess, sort of.

I actually like MREs. Some Vietnam-era pagan dude at a festival I went to taught me how to make frosting out of the non-dairy creamer and sugar packets for the "poundcake in a sack" thingy, and they're pretty damn decent. Everything you need for a meal and a snack later on, with next to no cleanup necessary. Very good for college and camping, and you can get 'em for $3 apiece at Army Suplus places if you buy in bulk.

I was one of the lucky ones. I only had to eat MREs for lunch, and you didn't even have to do that, because our supply sergeant made daily runs to BIAP to bring back chips, tuna, and candy.

6 months later, we had a chow hall and 4 hot meals a day.

Oh, and that's the other good thing about buying them - you get to pick meals, instead of being handed the top one on the box.

(Omelettes - or anything primarily made with eggs for that matter - should not be shelf-stable. It just defies the laws of food.)

I'm a Katrina survivor (don't like being labeled "victim") and those MREs were a farking lifesaver. And yes, the military distributed them down here like there was no tomorrow. I'm not surprised there were spares (my family ended up with a couple of cases of twelve left over, but we're keeping them in case we get hit by Katrina's baby's daddy's other baby's momma's cousin next year). They're not that bad when you haven't eaten a bite in three or four days. Thank you to all that helped us from south Mississippi.

Besides, it's hard getting them to the people who actually need them. You might get your feet wet or something.

Taxpayers had already paid for the MREs, because the government had already bought them. The government has to use them somehow - as has been already said on the thread, there are a lot of red-tape issues with selling off surplus and they don't have an eternal "good by" date. It's long, but doesn't run forever.

That's pretty much why they give them away all the time - it's necessary to have a stock just in case it's necessary (can't make any more if someone's blown up the factory after all), but they have to cycle it pretty well continuously to get the older-dated ones out of the warehouse before they simply go bad and no one can use them. Besides, they certainly helped - and the people down there probably didn't receive any more of the things than their taxes had already paid to purchase.
