Didn't we see almost the exact same headline when scientists figured out how to make black roses? And then a few months before that when they figured out how to make blue ones? What is wrong with the roses we have?

'Cause of the challenge. Roses aren't blue because they're so acidic, and the blue pigmentation gets destroyed. They have to mod roses with pansy genes to make them basic instead of acidic, so the color will take. Still working on it, but the results thus far are impressive...

Submitter uses tired cliche of a headline, still not funny.

from TFA: Dole is giving North Carolina State University $1.4 million for a three-year study to genetically engineer a red rose that lives longer than current varieties, contains fewer thorns and produces a better aroma, the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported Tuesday.

so, current roses have too many thorns, die too quickly, and don't smell enough. i'm all for it.

"Science builds a better rose, still no cure for cancer"

oh yeah, but with the genetic work they have done, they will be able to make people with cancer blue or black or less thorny. Bet submitter didn't think of that!

2006-02-14 09:28:33 PM
Yeah, but think of it this way: At least there will be plenty of good quality roses for the funerals of those who have died from cancer?

I say, those blokes at the House of Lancaster are such uncouth ruffians! I can speak with a fair amount of certainty that they engage in improper relations with those of their own gender.

This is yet another instance of science surging ahead with GMO plants without first verifying their safety in the real world. It's irresponsible and it has to stop.

roses are lame. Tulips all the way. They are the cheaper, elegant, non-violent flower and I buy them for my girlfriend and she loves them. And also, it is fun to say two-lip!

Palmer Eldritch: What is wrong with the roses we have?

What's wrong with the cars we have now? What about the computers, televisions, movies.......

2006-02-15 12:34:52 AM
Actually, longer-lasting roses is a great idea. That's the main thing that sucks about flowers.

More fragrant roses isn't such a great idea though. Some of us appreciate there being flowers that we can put in our apartment without choking.

The less thorns thing? Eh. I've always kinda liked the symbolism of the supposedly-most-beautiful flower having thorns... but then, if I worked in a flower shop I'd probably be real happy if they didn't.
