Was he hit in the elbow?

Gregory Scott Wood approached from behind the tree and fired his weapon, which the Ludington Daily News described as a .17-caliber rifle.

Is that the usual caliber for squirrel hunting?

Nice photo, I'd be interested in seeing the reaction shots from the crowd in the balcony.

Is this before or after Dick's incident? Maybe this is to divert attention.

It's basically the credo by which I live my life.

ZAZ: Is that the usual caliber for squirrel hunting?

17 HMR probably. It's sold as a varmint gun. They're very common.

From TFA: Sikkenga was wearing camouflage clothing except for an orange hat, which he had covered with a hood after sitting down behind a tree, The Muskegon Chronicle reported.

So he was wearing camo and covered his hat. His "buddy" approched from the other side of the tree and shot his elbow. I can understand the mistake. Often, all you ever see of a squirrel is a tiny bit poking out from a thicket. He probably saw movement, sited in on something poking out and shot it.

Why the fark was he out hunting with a friend and didn't know where his friend was?

You could ask Dick Cheney the same question.

Here's some local hunters in our neck of the woods:

DA: Cousin kicked boy as he lay shot, dying
By Oliver Mackson
Times Herald-Record
Goshen - As 13-year-old David Kingston cried out for help, bleeding from a rifle wound in his back, his 38-year-old cousin kicked him and threatened to duct-tape his mouth if he didn't shut up.
A prosecutor yesterday told that story to an Orange County Court judge as Jake Kingston Jr. of Port Jervis and Wayne Kingston Sr. of Huguenot were arraigned on felony charges of manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide and misdemeanor charges of taking deer without antlers. They're accused of retrieving two illegally hunted does before they got help for David, who was pronounced dead at a Port Jervis hospital more than two hours after the Thanksgiving Day shooting.
"The deer got better treatment than their family member," Assistant District Attorney David Hoovler said at yesterday's arraignment.
Wayne Kingston Sr. was David's grandfather; Jake Kingston Jr. was his cousin. Michael Kingston Jr., who was David's twin brother, was the fourth member of a hunting party that entered the woods in Sparrowbush, near the Sullivan County line, on Nov. 24, 2005, Thanksgiving morning.
Sometime between 10 and 10:30 a.m., Wayne Kingston fired a shot from his .243 Winchester rifle, and it hit David in the back. At first, Wayne Kingston denied hitting his grandson, telling Department of Environmental Conservation police Investigator Bernard Rivers, "I shot my gun - firearm - at a deer, and it startled my grandson, who fell and hit his head."

There's more, might need reggie....

Hey, I resemble that! I'm an asshat from lower Michigan, and I've never shot anybody! Yet. My mom's a fed, though, and she did take me to the shooting range with her a lot when I was growing up, so it's probably a good thing I don't go around armed. Too many folks from Ohio on our roads. ;)

the difference between republicans and democrats is that if a republican is involved in a hunting accident, they get the person to the hospital now and deal with the press later. if a democrat is involved in a hunting accident, they call a press conference first and worry about getting the other person to the hospital after the press conference (where they spend extended amounts of time talking about their feelings).

A 22 caliber handgun has long been the preferred handgun of hitmen. The bullet can enter the skull, but ricochets around in there causing unsurvivable trauma.

Guns kill. Even PELLET guns can kill.

Care to take a shot to the elbow with a .17 cal. rim fire?
Actually it would probably be a very good squirrel gun. Squirrel doesn't taste like chicken.

I know a guy who shot himself in the head with a .22, and the bullet didn't get through his skull. Didn't even break the bone. The whole hitman w/ a .22 thing preassumes that the bullet doesn't hit bone first.

2006-02-13 05:40:41 PM
a .17-caliber rifle.

That would be an air rifle. Still hurts, though. Got one'll punch a hole right through a pine fence paling at 30 yards. Kills squirrels real good, too.

That's an anomaly. a .22 at point-blank range will almost always penetrate one's skull.

2006-02-13 05:46:53 PM
people have been shot with .22s in the back of the head and didn't realize they had been shot until they felt blood dripping down the back of their necks. i'd take a .17 to the elbow for $5000 and medical care, no sweat.

it depends. there are lots of ".22s". i would take my skull over a .22 short fired out of a derringer.

ANd this is why trolls (kudos to you if you know what that means and why) ought not be allowed out of the house. Because no, it doesn't. Dude was trigger happy, saw movement, and BLAM. Well, with a .17, more like *pop*. But anywho....a half-second of evaluation and he woulda said "Huh...not real squirrely looking."

At point blank range? You'd be dead. See, the nasty thing about .22s is they go in, and they don't come out. They spin and tumble, and generally turn things into a finely blended mush.

Real men hunt with bows.
Really real men hunt with knives.
And the realest of men dont hunt, they just tempt the animal right into the fireplace.

If it was a .17HMR it could kill you. It is a high velocity rimfire round. It is becoming very popular in a short time.

Apathy Curve: a .17-caliber rifle.....That would be an air rifle.

See above. Some .17's are nasty

Google the .17 HMR

Me thinks the evening Ballistics aficionados are confusing the .17hmr with a
.177 air pellet.

In the elbow? I think not. At close enough range? Sure. At close enough range, a pellet gun can penetrate your temple and do some nasty shiat too.

Folks, you gots to check out "The Hunting Party." This is the greatest graphic novel ever created:

Yeah, Christin and Bilal are fureignurs and all, but this is magic. Frank Miller rules, don't get me wrong -- the Dark Knight is the penultimate work in the genre -- but The Hunting Party is the shiet...
