Well, let me tell you something, funny boy. Y'know that little stamp, the one that says "New York Public Library"? Well that may not mean anything to you, but that means a lot to me. One whole hell of a lot. Sure, go ahead, laugh if you want to. I've seen your type before -- flashy, making the scene, flaunting convention. Yeah, I know what you're thinking. What's this guy making such a big stink about old library books? Well, let me give you a hint, junior. Maybe we can live without libraries, people like you and me. Maybe. Sure, we're too old to change the world -- but what about that kid, sitting down, opening a book, right now, in a branch at the local library and finding drawings of pee-pees and wee-wees on the Cat in the Hat and the Five Chinese Brothers? Doesn't HE deserve better?

Look. If you think this is about overdue fines and missing books, you'd better think again. This is about that kid's right to read a book without getting his mind warped! Or maybe that turns you on, Seinfeld -- maybe that's how y'get your kicks. You and your good-time buddies. Well I got a flash for ya, joy-boy -- party time is over.

If I were her I would show my cootch to those facists down at the local library and tell them to go F themselves.

/i have no point.

She should have waited until they announced their next Fee Amnesty.

2006-02-12 07:59:41 PM
To be sure, the headline is somewhat misleading:

But Library manager Jane Gilbert said she would waive the charges. Displaying a book that has been "out" for 61 years would be the cat's pajamas, she said.

In other news, I'm pretty sure the phrase "the cat's pajamas" has also been out for 61 years, if not longer.

Things like this happen every week. And they show up on Fark every week.

She should have waited until they announced their next Fee Amnesty.

Methinks that the chances of her being around for that are rather small.

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thought of Seinfeld as soon as they read the headline.

"Family members discovered the book while searching the attic of her husband's former family home. They decided that giving her New Zealand's most overdue library book as a birthday present would be really clever."

Those zany New Zealander's... bet they thought it was real funny when granny got a stroke from opening the post with that particular bill. I hope she stuck her tongue out at them real good.

Ka mate, ka mate
Ka ora, ka ora
Tenei te tangata puhuruhuru
Nana i tiki mai whakawhiti te ra
Upane, upane
Upane kaupane
Whiti te ra.

(translation for non Maori readers)

It is death, it is death
It is life, it is life
This is the hairy man
Who caused the sun to shine again for me
Up the ladder, up the ladder
Up to the top
The sun shines.

I guess it depends on the library, but the maximum fine I've ever gotten is the cost to replace the book in question. Then again, if it's a 60+ year old book maybe it is worth a lot.

King's "The Ten O'Clock People", although unrelated to this thread, haunts my every dream. Smoke.

I could've sworn it was going to be my elementary school music teacher. She would come out of the library with milk crates full of books and never return them.

She also brought some of the nastiest lunches I've ever seen in my life.

It was the first openly gay book.
Actually, the second. Johnny Tremain was first.

There is no excuse for returning books late to a library, or owing money to a library.

Liberry.
