Not the first time Pratchett's been on tv- a couple of his books aired as cartoons in England. I got the Wyrd Sisters version for christmas- pretty good, covers almost the entire book.

PRATCHETT rocks. I wanna see the "Last Hero" or anything with Granny Weatherwax. She cracks me up. But then most of his characters crack me up.

When they stated Hogfather was the third book, they probably meant the 3rd book of the Death series. Meaning the third book that death/susan played a prominent role. As far as it being released in England, Skyone is beginning to export some shows to the Sci Fi channel in the states now as well, so I'm sure we will see it eventually. Plus there is always the internets.

/Pratchett is the god of "you owe me a new keyboard".

Which is the one with the 'gonne'? Guards! Guards!?

I have to say that Hogfather was the first one I read. I have since read all of the others, of course. I can still remember buying it. It must have been shortly after it came out, I had seen it at a bookseller in Heathrow and finally broke down and bought it after seeing it again at a bookseller in Newcastle airport. I remember thinking 'What the hell is this!' after reading the back cover.....little did I know the money that would be spent on the quest for the rest of the series *sniff*.... Now I feel like singing Memories with Ren.

My local library let me check out "Thud!" over the internet as a secure self-destructing pdf.

Free!

Next time I'll try to save it to the Palm Tungsten.

Easily Sam is my favorite character. I love a man in uniform.

And for those who need a little help with all those jokes, I present to you The Annotated Pratchett File, v9.0:

Personally, I rather liked "Pyramids". Not part of a series, just a great, stand-alone Discworld book. The scene where the philosophers in Ephebe are testing out the Xeno's tortoise idea is just classic, as is Pteppic's explanation of "Mocracy". And you still get plenty o' Death in there as well.

/that's just me though

Am I the only one who thinks Sourcery ought to be made into a film/tv show?

I mean, I know that the adventure games (primarily the 1st one) were based loosely on this, but not really.

Looks like BitTorrent is going to get a workout on Christmas Day, between this and second the Doctor Who special airing on the BBC that day. Good thing I bought a DivX-compatible DVD player last year so I can watch all of this on my TV.

CheeseEatingBulldog: I am a bit half/half on this. He said he would never allow his books to be filmed and now this.

He's never said he wouldn't let them be filmed, he's always said he wouldn't let them be filmed BADLY just to get the money.

zenobia: This is for British TV. How is this good news for those of us who don't get that channel?

*cough*bittorrent*cough*

My favourite Discworld novels:

Reaper Man - the first one I read. I saw it in the school library when I was 15, Kirby's cover art interested me, so I picked it up.
Small Gods - brilliant indictment of organised religion.
Interesting Times - I'm still a fan of Rincewind

Guards Guards is one the greatest books written in the 20th century.

/Maybe a slight exageration.
//Small Gods is pretty good too.

Who would play the other parts?

Vimes would have to be James Gandolfini. Someone has to find a role for Bill Murray.

Since the other thread got retrograded to TF right when I was replying:

I tried reading a Pratchett Piers Anthony novel (forget which one) it was full of moronic puns to the point of being painful to read. I never read another of his books. I like the Myth.. series, the red dwarf books, the wizard/titan series, hitchiker's guide and all that good stuff. Are all his books that bad? Should I try Discworld?

Much as I hate that cliche... fixed that for you.

Not to bash the bwits. I love JK, Kim Newman, Neil G, and Alan "Kablammo" Moore. They're not twee like that.

It's been long enough -- we're claiming Gaiman as a Wisconsinite. He's not a Brit anymore, he's a Cheesehead, got it?? Thanks.

Vimes would have to be James Gandolfini. Someone has to find a role for Bill Murray.

Matter of personal preference and all but ... in my opinion, no he wouldn't have to be, and no someone doesn't.

CMOT Dibbler? Or maybe the Bursar.

cool! i just started reading Pratchett this week, on recommendation from a couple people at my local brewpub. every time i have seen them in the last 6 months, they have had a Pratchett book with them. so far, i have only read 'Truth', and 'Thief of Time', but i'm planning on reading more, and disappointed i hadn't heard of it sooner.

on the other hand, i can't see that the humor would easily adapt to the screen, but it sure can't be any worse than all the recycled remakes coming out of hollywood these days....

"Hogfather" may be the third in the Death arc- Mort to Reaper Man to Hogfather.

Except Soul Music is in there fouling things up.

I don't know, I love Discworld, but the Rincewind, Death, and Witches arcs always stood out for me. I always found Vimes and the Guard to be kinda dull. Maybe it's just how the setting never changes.
