This thread is dreadful.

/the Simon Cowell remark had to be made.
//actually kind of likes Simon
///would never go on American Idol. Your welcome. :)

Nice use of the img.fark.com tag. I can hardly watch this show because of all the bloody vocal gymnastics. Just SING the damn SONG.

I'm also talking to YOU, Aaron Neville and Aretha Franklin.

2006-02-07 03:40:30 PM
nickg: I'll see your this thread is dreadful and raise you a completely awful.

"The worst was Britney Spears years ago, where everyone came with a slightly affected 'Oh, baby, baby.' Nobody sings like that. I mean, that was done with production, and God knows, not very well. And they come in and they try and repeat that sort of vocal and you go, 'Oh, for God's sake, how stupid.' "

Amen.

I've never watched more than a half an episode of "American Idol" but judging purely on the ads and the aggregate 30 minutes I've seen, does anyone think that there's anything real about the whole thing? When I was a kid I was bedridden for a week and had to watch "The People's Court" and the acting in that was better than anything I've seen on "American Idol". To think people actually care about what happens on this "Star Search" wannabe is hilarious.

The oversinging is breaking out everywhere. Just saw Stevie Wonder oversing the bejesus out of "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" at Coretta Scott King's funeral.

And if you're oversinging at a gospel funeral, you're really oversinging.

/liked Willie Nelson's "Georgia on my Mind" at Ray's funeral infinitely better

2006-02-07 04:16:33 PM
I hear you loud and clear boss.

This next song is a new-soul classic, a song which means a lot to me as it is the one with which I won "Amateur Night At The Apollo" with five weeks running.

Okay here it goes, "This House is Not A Home," Speak and Spell Eunuch Version!

2006-02-07 06:32:02 PM
You mean people are getting tired of solo pop singers? Who'd a thunk it?

2006-02-07 06:32:08 PM
Most singers oversing. That's why I prefer the KISS method. Keep It Simple, Stupid.

That was absolutely the most ghastly headline I've read all day. It was all over the scale and never in the same pitch. Off you go.

/waits to see the headlines, "Simon shot dead!"

American Idol makes me crazy - think about your favorite band or singer. They wouldn't get past the auditions - unless you like over-produced "baby baby wooo ooo" music.

We're all very impressed by your intellect. If you cannot give a damn about American Idol, that must mean you are a very atrractive and successful person. We are so blessed to have you in our midst.

Thank you.

The lousy singers are the best part. I'm sad this season is over now.

/stops watching after the auditions.

Agreed, greaser_77

Wow, obvious is a severe understatement.

You can usualy tell who is going to make it to hollywood before they sing. They do the little bio-piece on them. They go to their house, talk to their dog, etc.

Granted, this is shot after they make it... but it kind of blows the surprise.

I want to see the homes of the loosers. That would teh r0x0rz.

2006-02-07 06:42:23 PM
That's cuz they all watch too much of the Mtv in the first place.

I refer to it as urban yodeling.

2006-02-07 06:42:41 PM
The headline sounds something like James Hetfield would sing.

Probably from all the "yeah's."

MTV complaining about people singing???

/didn't rtfa

2006-02-07 06:42:47 PM
Does anyone else find it ironic that MTV (the channel named 'Music Television that shows little to no music and features several dozen shows aimed at the lowest common denominator) is criticising another channel's music shoe (even if it is full of hacks)?

2006-02-07 06:44:37 PM

The theme from "Baretta"?

I realize this is Fark, but I can't stand it when people come into a thread about television shows, music, movies, whatever, and proudly declare that they don't Give A Damn. I have a feeling they do this because they think it makes them seem "better", when in reality, it just makes it seem like they are so insecure that they have to prove themselves to an internet community.

Anyway, /threadjack off.

I've noticed the oversinging more this year than any other. My favorite has to be the "We Are the World" move: holding your hand up to your ear while singing.

2006-02-07 06:46:32 PM
Mariah Carey sucks.

2006-02-07 06:46:46 PM
God, I wish there were a pr0n0 version of this show. You'd get exactly the same contestants.

Except no one would believe "William Hung" was his real name.

2006-02-07 06:46:47 PM
You know what infuriates me about Coldplay? The way every song of theirs includes at least one instance of the word "singin'", usually between measures, and generally as a prelude to ghey falsetto. We know you're singing! Don't have to emphasize the obvious! Now stand in the corner with Badly Drawn Boy!

Thank you for your time.

2006-02-07 06:47:33 PM
Does everyone still do that dopey hand wavering up and down with the tune thing that started with those obnoxious 80's divas?

Ya, well, doesn't change the fact that American Idol sucks and that I don't give a damn either. Plus I dont see what insecurity has to do with this, but I don't care either.

Wow, I didn't realize that post would be fodder for some serious sarcasm. So, are you having a bad day or are you a huge Idol fan?

(or maybe it was the 90's...time goes by too fast)

2006-02-07 06:49:22 PM
meh, american idol displays a performing art, and a shallow one at that. These are people singing other peoples songs. Thats not art - that is fluff. The whole show is one big piece of fluff. I hate it when these types of people call themselves artists.

Heh, neither. I posted my reasoning above.

BuckTheInfernal

It doesn't change anything. It's just a personal pet peeve of mine. I don't see any reason to proclaim that you don't give a damn. Am I missing some redeeming quality?

2006-02-07 06:51:52 PM
I've been complaining about that vocal style for years. Doesn't anyone know how to just hold a note anymore? All those unnecessary trills, whoops and hiccups...what's the point? It used to be a singer would just sing the song straight and then add some fancy vocalizing right at the end of the song to spice it up. Nowadays, an entire song is nothing but crappy, overwrought vocal exercises.

I must be getting old.

2006-02-07 06:52:25 PM
I work with a numb-nuts that thinks he can sing. I've had to tell him to stfu so many times I gave up.

/no point
//hates over singing
///hates people who think they can sing, yet (ha!) cannot...
////reaaalllly hates forward slash
/////can't stop due to compulsion
//you know folks, there really is no point...
