Huh? In addition to foiling terrorists they want to foil misguided belief? Or are they trying see through trash cans and misguided belief?

What's the point? The inside of the trash can will be lined with a black Glad bag, rendering the see-through exterior useless.

2006-02-05 02:44:03 AM
The TTC started that here in Toronto a few months ago, to little fanfare.

They were just following the lead that the European transit groups have been up to for a decade or so.

Makes sense, I guess. A trash bin is (was) the easiest place to stash a destructive device.

Flopsy: The inside of the trash can will be lined with a black Glad bag, rendering the see-through exterior useless.

Durr... clear trash bags exist, you know.

2006-02-05 02:45:38 AM
No no, go to grand central and ask a donut cop why there are no trashcans, they'll say something like "so no one drops anything dangerous in them". Then go walk right into the dunkin donuts, pizza hut, mc'ds, fridays, magazine shop, hot n crusty, bathrooms, and drop your package in there. Yeah, good going.

2006-02-05 02:49:59 AM
cos wraping your bomb up in a mcdonalds bag isn't obvious

2006-02-05 02:50:54 AM
Clear trash cans would ruin the point of hiding in them if a spontaneous game of hide-and-seek broke out.

Amen, steelpeg. You know where these show up next: rest stops in Wyoming.

2006-02-05 03:01:00 AM
And how long until they have a thick enough coating of filth to no longer be see-through?

2006-02-05 03:02:19 AM

Best take on it when I read about it on Gawker.com:

"The latest in harder-to-hide-bombs-in trash-receptacle technology, spotted this morning at Jay Street-Borough Hall:

www.gawker.com

Because if we cant see our garbage and the occasional sample of homeless-person shiat then were letting the terrorists win."

As long as fast food joints serve soda in cups large enough to conceal a shrapnel coated pipe bomb, this idea is pointless.

2006-02-05 03:08:10 AM
is "explosives in the trashcan" such a big problem that something needed to be done about it?

2006-02-05 03:08:51 AM
In my day to get a government contract you had to be clever, like calling a stapler a "JK7-Blackhawk Document Containment System." Now all you have to do is say "anti-terrorist" or "homeland" and the check is in the mail, baby!

Well at least they've started doing something. I made my first trip to Toronto early last fall and made the mistake of eating an apple as I was walking around the streets.

I had to carry the remains around for quite a while before I found a public trashcan. They were nowhere to be found!

I was picturing something more along the lines of functional R2-D2 trashcan when I read the headline. "attmpt to foil terrorists" indeed.

2006-02-05 03:32:50 AM
Well, the only thing nice about this is you get to see nasty trash that has been getting ripe after three days on your walk to work in the morning.

Great.

They're everywhere to be found, they just don't look like trashcans. They're not cans, they're square-ish boxes on pretty much every street corner with ads on one side and slots for trash and recycling on the other, easy to overlook

Is there someone hiding in that can? I think so but its 5 am here and I think I'm seeing things...

2006-02-05 05:30:55 AM
submitter has never taken the NYC subway system in his life I see. Trash cans are usually overflowing onto the platform. But yes, many/most riders are filthy pigs who think the city is their garbage can. And it's split between NYers who think that it's their city and they can do what they want and the NJ/LI/Westchester/Rockland crowd who think that because they don't live here, they can do what they want.

/PSA: DO NOT CLIP YOUR FINGERNAILS ON THE SUBWAY OR I WILL SHOVE MY FOOT INTO YOUR PRIMARY ANAL ORIFICE.

//PSA V 2.0: DO NOT PERFORM YOUR BEAUTY RITUAL ON THE SUBWAY OR I WILL JOSTLE YOUR ARM WHILE YOU APPLY. GET UP 10 MINS EARLIER YOU LAZY C**T.

2006-02-05 05:48:48 AM
Damn you Commies, where's your entrepreneurial spirit?

Some businessman is going to make a MINT off of clear trash cans! Why should your prosaic concerns of "common sense" and "not being a pedantic idiot" be taken seriously? SOME GUY IS GONNA GET RICH. THAT FIXES EVERYTHING.

2006-02-05 06:22:42 AM
Damn. Now I have to wrap up my bomb in a paper bag BEFORE I throw it away. Wow, that'll show me.

2006-02-05 07:51:17 AM
In what way are these transparent materials better at containing a ka-boom should someone not give a fark and stuff a bagged device in one anyway?

Owl says "NO WAI!"

2006-02-05 08:20:11 AM
I'd rather have the bomb blast diffusing (dont defusing, just diffusing) trashcans than a deathtrap where you get to see how bad idea it was just beforehand. Beyond that, the larger trashcans already aren't emptied enough, to make them smaller is just reatrded.

2006-02-05 08:31:40 AM
Criticize it all you want, but remember that they're just trying to protect us.

Is this perfect? No, not really, but it's one more thing the bad guys have to contend with.

At least they're TRYING to do something.

Can someone point me to a news story featuring explosives in subway trash cans? I can't seem to remember them all.

2006-02-05 09:43:07 AM
Brilliant (not really)

Now the terrorists will simply put their bomb in a trash bag before throwing it into the see-thru trash can...

... or a bathroom stall...

... or in a dark corner...

... or under the seat of the subway train...

... or strapped to their bodies...

... etc, ad nauseum

2006-02-05 10:00:26 AM
Whatever you do, make sure the container is a shrapnel source.

2006-02-05 10:03:10 AM
The clear square bins made of a glass-like material...

Awesome. So now when someone does put a bomb in a trash can, and wraps it in a newspaper, the trash can turns into shrapnel that is largely invisible on an X-ray.

I feel safer already.

At first I thought you were joking. Really. Then I saw this under your profile:

I'm with London. You don't need 'em. Theres enough on the street. Hold on to your filth for five minutes.

New York should be more concerned about the dog sized rats that I witnessed in flagrant'e on the Subway platform. A fellow rider said..."The funniest thing is...this isn't even their stop."

2006-02-05 10:33:14 AM
In New York City, we call this "beautification".

2006-02-05 10:36:16 AM
Sweet, now when I get drunk and puke into a garbage can, everyone can try to guess what I ate/drank that night!

I <3 NY

I thought the goal of Al Queda was to bankrupt America.

By the look of things, they're totally achieving their goal...

I wonder how much money has been spent on them in the last few years, these garbage cans included.

I see my "Bomb disguised as a jelly donut" will soon have a market in New York.

Here's an idea: why not try those responsible for 9-11 in absentia? Force all of those claiming whatever they may claim to testify on the stand publicly, offer the dead terrorists the best legal defense possible and let the government prove its case as it is required to do in all other criminal allegations.

/Oh why bother.
//The government now gets to decide who's guilty without trial.
///And this is America?

An interesting (but flawed) idea, but there are several terrorists alive today that have had a hand in 9/11 and I serious doubt that Osama bin Laden and his ilk will come out of hiding to stand trial even if in a totally neutral place with the best legal defense ever.

2006-02-05 11:39:11 AM
Espertron:

Where is the flaw in this idea? Trying someone in absentia has happened before in this country (take a look at the case of Ira Einhorn).

We do not need UBL in order to try him. What's more, we should broadcast this trial, and if there are "enemy combatants" in captivity, they should be given lawyers and required to testify, along with Donald Rumsfeld, Richard Cheney, Bill Clinton, Condi Rice, Richard Myers, etc.

2006-02-05 11:43:10 AM
This would serve the dual purpose of establishing the identities of the hijackers (there have been serious allegations that some of the persons alleged to have perpetrated this crime are still alive, having had their identities stolen prior to 9-11), and giving satisfaction to the families of the victims.

I doubt you'll get any of the "principal players" to stand forth to testify.

Do you seriously think that George W Bush, Condi Rice, Bill Clinton, Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Osama bin Laden, Karl Rove, etc... are going to allow themselves to be put on the stand to explain themselves?

I think not. I'm not saying I disagree with your idea, but it's flawed becuase it'll never happen.

2006-02-05 11:59:37 AM
... or a bathroom stall...

I always let off a bomb when I'm in a public stall.

/screw the courtesy flush

Seriously, how long will 'translucent' stay 'translucent' in the NYC subways?

I am constantly wiping thin layers of dark grime off my Manhattan windows, walls, knick-knacks, floors, body parts, etc...

2006-02-05 12:14:23 PM
i think it's a great idea! especially since no one would ever place a bomb in another container and then into the translucent bin. nope, they always put the bomb right on top where you can see it with the red and green wires and the acme tag.
