Yvonne DeCarlo is still alive (age 84), and BOTH Marilyns (Pat Priest and Beverly Owen) are still alive, along with Butch Patrick.

Oh well.. add this to the "submitted this with a better headline" file ("Now we get to find out if Grampa Munster is really a vampire.")

PS - You'd never know he lived 95 years if you go to CNN, they keep saying he was 83... :-P

Do you remember him in a cheesy gangsters-themed music video with Debra Harry of Blondie? Or did I just imagine that?

When I was a freshman in college, Grandpa ran for Governor of New York on the Green Party ticket. You know my stoned ass voted for him. Would have made things interesting if he'd won, not that he had a snowball's chance in hell. As I recall, he actually tried (unsuccessfully) to get his name on the ballot as Al "Grandpa" Lewis.

/RIP

Al Lewis was a very cool old guy. I hope I'm half as cool as he was when I'm ninety-five.

Hell, I hope I'm ninety-five someday.

/RIP, Grandpa

Annoyance

I can't say for sure, but I thought I temembered hearing somewhere that Grandpa used to shave about a ten years or so off of his age on his publicity materials to avoid scaring away directors who might not want to insure him.

Just a possibility.

2006-02-04 07:14:14 PM
Peace on the other side Al.

Bosola- I see, it's that damned liberal media bias again
/Seriously? That's pretty shrewed thinking. Hope I'm active in my 90's, and not worm food.

In regards to the 83/95 bit:

Apparently it originates from when they were doing auditions for The Munsters. He lied about his age. Why?

He was born in 1923, and the chick that played his daughter, Yvonne De Carlo, was born in 1922. Lewis saw a slight problem in this, so he changed his age so that he would at least be a few years older than his "daughter".

As spry as the guy was, and looking at the evidence and what his kids have said, I'd say that he was born in 1923.

"FARK THE FCC!!! FARK UM!!"
SPOKEN LIKE A TRUE LEGEND!!

2006-02-04 07:20:54 PM
Sometime in the mid-80s, when Stern was still relevant, Howard held some anti-FCC rally in New York. Grandpa grabbed teh mic and started shouting "Fark the FCC, fark 'em, fark em!"

Little known fact: In his later years Al was known to write pornographic stories. What a guy!

If I could only live as varied, full and successful a life as Al Lewis. He was a hero of mine. Below are some of my favorite quotes attributed to him:

"Find something that you love to do. Not that you like it, or that it's pleasant, but that you love what you do, and you learn to love the way that you do it."

"I've got a spine made of stainless steel... Nothing shrinks it. NOTHIN'!!"

RIP, Al.

RIP Grandpa.

I always loved his guest role on Lost in Space as a Wizard (Zolto?) and his dummy. The scenes with him and Dr. Smith were great.

HumanShield_M: Im confused... Cnn says he was 83 *shrug*

CNN got it wrong, says HERE his birthdate is April 30, 1910.

He also ran for governor of New York two years prior to his 90th birthday.

When I was younger I could never figure out why Grandpa Munster would have political commercials on tv.
