Personally, I'll stand by the stripper. The church can't force you to sign an agreement saying how you will live your life, even as a condition of enrolling your kids in the school. And they're downright shiatty for punishing a little girl for her mother's professional choices, especially three weeks from the end of the school year. What, the kid's supposed to make up the entire year somewhere else because some up-tights can't handle a topless woman earning a buck? And they only relented because the spotlight was shining on them so brightly, not because of their charitable Christian values.

Screw the church trying to dictate how people live their lives and blackmailing them into compliance using their children.

OK, first off, I never said that I thought the church (whatever affiliation this one has) was evil. I said that their methods of controlling the behavior of their parishioners was reprehensible (throwing little kids out of school because of what their parents do).

Second, yes she signed the document. Yes it is a private school and they can do what they want. But does that make what they actually did do less shiatty? No. The agreement is simply a get out of jail free card for the church, designed for situations such as this. The up-tights didn't like her stripping, and punished her kid for it in order to force her to do what they wanted. They ignored the fact that she may have been a decent mother who paid the bills and was always home for her kid during the day. To me, that's a lot more important to a kid's childhood than any kind of churching.

Third, I'm not dictating any terms for the church. I am saying that they're shiatty for trying to control people through children. They're shiatty for trying to impose a standard that may not take into account the child's best interests. They're shiatty for allowing a vocal minority to dictate the lives of other parishioners, and hiding behind a document that may or may not be legally binding (a signature on a paper does not a contract make).

Finally, none of the facts of the case have changed, which is why I got pissed at the sheep. The church would have stuck to its guns had the national media spotlight not fallen directly on their heads. This wasn't an act of charity, it was an act of public relations. Prevailing opinion was that they were acting nasty for a pretty minor infraction. They couldn't take the heat, and relented. It was CYA all the way, baby.

And as for the change in occupation of the stripper mom, recall that many, many places offered her jobs. I'm sure they were great positions like company president, chairman of the board and other high-paying gigs. She only took this shock jock position to milk her celebrity status. [/sarcasm, by the way, for the mentally impaired]

I'm guessing that the radio gig was the one that offered her the best combination of advantages: decent pay, flexible hours so she can be with the kid after school, and a touch of performance, which she seems to enjoy.

She certainly isn't Mother Teresa, and I don't know if any of this is true. But I'm hopeful that I'm close to being right on this--that she is really trying to be a good mom using the skills and education she has (which seem to be pretty limited right now). As far as I'm concerned, being a good mom is far, far more important than being a good Christian.

As long as they aren't breaking the law they can do what they damn well please and if you sign a contract with them it's your problem not the publics.
