(Miami Herald)   "Memoirs of a Geisha" movie is banned in China. But DVD pirates, normally full of respect for the law, don't seem to care   (miami.com) divider line 62

I have a ton of pirated DVD's my sib sends me from Thailand. Some of them even feature people walking in front of the screen. They won't play on my DVD player, only in the Xbox. But that's what you get for $1 a piece!

Isn't that ironic. Chinese actresses playing Japanese Geisha's and the movie gets banned in their own country.

China is awesome.

But...

You think that herpes is bad here?

It's way way way worse there.

Pick someone out, kiss them.

You got herpes. No matter what caste.

One of the things we can still turn out by the dozen and sell abroad, and they pirate all of the damn things.

trade deficit, anyone?

2006-02-02 03:05:27 PM
Oh it's worse herpes. There may be only a few "classified" strains here, but I've seen people who work for chip manufacturers come back, 3 months later and they got something that looks like their lips are flaking off and all they did was share a drink.

Or so they said.

Wait a minute; a movie that is up for an Oscar in the U.S is banned in China?

This can't be, it can't stand. No censorship! Freedom for the working class!

In fact, I'm sure that FARK's uber principled super liberals are in the process of making protest posters as we speak...

2006-02-02 03:20:27 PM
How come the Chineese get to do this and we don't! More importantly, where is the website that I can order some of these from?!?

2006-02-02 03:23:49 PM
Awesome book. Hope the movie does it justice.

JEEZ that movie was boring.

Two and a half hours of beautiful scenery and weeping Asian women.

Lame.

China has been under pressure from the United States and other trading partners to stamp out its rampant piracy of goods ranging from books and movies to drugs and designer clothes.

Huh? How exactly do you pirate a drug? are the little pictures stamped on my ecstacy trademarked by the drug barons?

My girlfriend and I were in Chinatown and bought a copy of Miyazaki's Howl's Moving Castle on DVD for $5. The case and dvd looked 100% professional and legit.

We get home and throw it in the dvd player. The only audio was in Japanese (which was ok for my gf who is Japanese) but luckily it had english subtitles.

We start watching and I could immediately tell the movie was not an original copy but obviously from an internet source. No biggie still very watchable.

The subtitles were timed perfectly with the spoken word but something was wrong. The words weren't making sense. Especially the swearing by little children.

My gf paused the movie and said "These subtitles are wrong."

No duh! They weren't even close!

Seems they chose the subtitles from some other movie and synched them to Howl's Moving Castle.

We had a good laugh since we only really spent $5.

So China's mad, but Japan has no problem. Shouldn't it be the other way around? Having a Chinese actress playing a geisha means that no Japanese actress was famous/good/beautiful enough.

2006-02-02 04:24:33 PM
Why do you pay? There are plenty of them posted in the newsgroups. Oscar season is the best. You can get a DVD-quality screener for just about every movie out right now. You don't have to deal with people walking in front of the cameraman.

The problem is not so much pirated drugs as it is fake drugs. A while back, fake baby formula got onto a local market and caused quite a few infants to die of malnurtrition.

Recently with the bird flu scare everybody wants to get Tamiflu because it's the antiviral thought most likely to prevent it. It's made by one company in Switzerland I think. US customs intercepted cases of fake Tamiflu that looked legit. Except the cases were labeled in Chinese so that was a tip-off. They turned out to be nothing but vitamin C or something. I wish I remembered more details but that was a few weeks ago

...newsworthy?

2006-02-02 05:59:27 PM
Its weird how all the geisha in the move are played by Chinese women. Like, it's not impossible to tell the diffrence between chinese and japanese women on average. It's like the diffrence between sweeds and italians.
