(Post Chronicle)   Trident submarines enter the war on terror...because a) that pirate problem is getting worse or b) they are big holes in the water that allow congressmen to pour money into their districts?   (postchronicle.com) divider line 182

Now that I actually RTFA, I think this is a pretty cool program. That's a lot of firepower that can show up unannounced.

Great. Just wonderful. Another shift at the helmsman/planesman station with the COB whacking the shiat outta the back of my head 'cause I overcorected again.

cuz they have a special tent in the mountains of afghanistan to monitor their vast underwater early warning systems

Well, I was just a surface squid, myself, but ex-MM3 (nuclear grade) Smith is ready to bang around in the Reactor Department. This leak is normal, right?

2006-01-27 11:41:33 AM
stevarooni: This leak is normal, right?

That was a fairly realistic comment when I was on SSBN-654, old POS that it was.

justlen-I was on SSBN-654, old POS that it was.

If you think that was bad, my first was the USS Tunny (SSN 682). Fast attack my ass, more like slow approach.

Heh. I was tightening up a primary coolant valve when the R.O. came by to see how things were going, justlen. 15-minute conversation with me terribly nervous about this (less than an ounce of) coolant sitting in a yellow bag wrapped around the valve. 0% leakage my ass!

Hittin' one of the destroyers in my carrier group, justlen? Hah! I imagine that some bright boy had to have used the constant banging of #3 shaft against the sides of the bearings for sonar pings. We sure as hell weren't invisible (what carrier is?) but nobody else was, either, I'm guessing.

We got them too. I took this from well inside the screen:

I wish I still had the panoramic shot we took of Vinson, including the guy pissing off the fantail. We sent it to the CO when we pulled into Perth. He was NOT happy.

2006-01-27 12:56:56 PM
Heh. So his wrath is taken upon by that idiot pissing off of the fantail, I'm sure. Good'n!

SSBNs (boomer subs) do more than launch SLBMs. They are packed with all sorts of goodies that obviously can't be discussed here...

Honestly, I'm sure the SSNs (fast attack subs) have already been up to... whatever...

If you ever get a chance to take a tour of one of the Tridents, do. Quite an enjoyable, eye opening experience.

Trust me, I eanred a set just like these...

Let's not forget that four out of five dentists recommend Trident, and that the fifth dentist is probably a terrorist himself.

2006-01-27 01:17:38 PM
While a Trident sub would be minty, wouldn't and 'Extra' sub last a lot longer? Not sure about a Dentyne...

2006-01-27 01:18:25 PM
HEY... this is cool... with all the bubbleheads on this thread, who can asnwer this one first:

There are only two types of ships. They are ________ and ______.

2006-01-27 01:18:49 PM
submarines
targets

2006-01-27 01:19:01 PM
How about a Doublemint sub?

Double the pleasure, double the fun, double the terrorist-dog hunting and obliterating capabilities, for the price of one!

2006-01-27 01:19:20 PM
This is old news, but pertinent. It's definately NOT a pork project. The new SSGNs are going to be kickass, with a huge amount of firepower. They'll be able to carry out normal attack sub missions, but they won't be nearly as cramped.

(I've been on two Ohio-class, but never a Los Angeles)

Uh... let me help you there...

You mean 'bubbleheads' and 'surface pukes.'

2006-01-27 01:22:15 PM
I think that people who are questing how useful submarines can be in this day and age need to read Submarine by Tom Clancy, it makes a very good case for them.

Just rememeber though, the vast majority of the useful things they do you will never know about.

You want slow attack? Try SSN-686. The esteemed L. Mendel Rivers. She wasn't going anywhere fast.

2006-01-27 01:22:35 PM
ericjohnson0: 'surface pukes.'

"Skimmer Pukes"

Try Phoenix, SSN-702. She lost 30% of her reduction gear because some farking yardbird dropped a nut.

2006-01-27 01:28:41 PM
Gurney,

The guys on the subs generally deal in the 'strategic' side of things...

For tactical you may have to talk to the Army... that is more their department I think, but I could be wrong...
