If I want videos, I'll watch Fuse. I watch MTV for the hilarity that is The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet II. Funniest show on TV.

Also, Made is a hugely underrated show.

/wants his Sifl & Olly and The State DVDs
//Alton is the best athlete in America. Easily.

Anyone remember "Martha's Greatest Hits" from 1989 & 1990? Martha Quinn would show and comment on videos from MTV's early life, with some newer ones added for variety. This show was a cool, tiny meta-MTV. I was surprised when MTV decided it was popular enough to go from a 30-min slot to a full hour. I never thought that this early retrospective would last, but it ran for months and months.

Nowadays the music video is practically an endangered species. Ah, nothing lasts forever. Thank God I set my VCR timer to tape all the "Martha's Greatest Hits" segments I could. Gotta get those puppies digitized and onto DVD soon.

Who actually watches MTV?

I'm not trying to sound elitist or smug, it's an honest question. What's on there that interests anyone?

2006-01-25 08:43:25 PM
MTV? I thought they got bought out by the sex channel. Masterbation Television is indeed coming!!

/would rather watch a non exsistant tv show about wanking then Mtv.

2006-01-25 08:46:00 PM
Anyone remember the dark haired girl that was on at the beginning? What was her name? Kinda goth looking chick.

I do miss Sifl and Ollie

2006-01-25 08:47:00 PM
Haven't watched MTV voluntarily since high school.

2006-01-25 08:48:33 PM
How many years has it been since MTV didn't suck? 10? 15?

2006-01-25 08:49:18 PM
HAHAHAHAHA

MTV
eMpTyV

get it?

because they used to play videos! hahaha USED TO! remember that? hahaha

remember how it was funny when you heard that 5 years ago? it hasn't been since it was said the first time. enough with the mtv bashing. it makes me want to go watch it, much like the Truth antismoking commercials make me want to go smoke.

2006-01-25 08:49:44 PM
Seriously, who cares? I don't know a single person who would admit to watching it other then my nieces and they're 9 and 11 respectively. MTV has always been the same: shiat. We all just matured enough to realize the absolute steaming pile of monkey dung it is. MTV has always been going for the least common denominator demograhpic among young teens and mildly retarded young adults.

2006-01-25 08:50:23 PM
I'm dating myself here but I remember when MTV was awesome. All music videos all the time and none of it was hip hop or rap.

2006-01-25 08:53:32 PM
anyone remember 3 south? they only aired a few episodes, but it was damn funny.

2006-01-25 08:53:51 PM
Hi
I'm your video DJ
I always talk like I'm wigged out on quaaludes
I wear a satin baseball jacket everywhere I go

My job is to help destroy
What's left of your imagination
By feeding you endless doses
Of sugar-coated mindless garbage

So don't create
Be sedate
Be a vegetable at home
And thwack on that dial
If we have our way even you will believe
This is the future of rock and roll

How far will you go
How low will you stoop
To tranquilize our minds with your sugar-coated swill

You've turned rock and roll rebellion
Into Pat Boone sedation
Making sure nothing's left to the imagination

M.T.V. Get off the
M.T.V. Get off the
M.T.V. Get off the air
Get off the air

See the latest rejects from the muppet show
Wag their tits and their dicks
As they lip-synch on screen
There's something I don't like
About a band who always smiles
Another tax write-off
For some schmuck who doesn't care

M.T.V. Get off the air
And so it was
Our beloved corporate gods
Claimed they created rock video
Allowing it to sink as low in one year
As commercial TV has in 25
"It's the new frontier," they say
It's wide open, anything can happen
But you've got a lot of nerve
To call yourself a pioneer
When you're too god-damn conservative
To take real chances.

Tin-eared
Graph-paper brained accountants
Instead of music fans
Call all the shots at giant record companies now

The lowest common denominator rules
Forget honesty
Forget creativity
The dumbest buy the mostest
That's the name of the game

But sales are slumping
And no one will say why
Could it be they put out one too many lousy records?

M.T.V.-Get off the air!
NOW

Yes actually I am old enough to remember when MTV used to play music videos.

I remember when MTV was commercial-free.

2006-01-25 08:58:41 PM
In the story, I think they said that the douchebag woman who hated music and purged it as much as possible as the program director has been promoted.

Personally, I think she should have been thrown into a tank full of hungry great white sharks at Spring Break.

Though I suspect they no longer run hardly any music videos because the music industry decided to start charging a LOT of money for royalties, instead of looking at videos as free advertising. Greedy, scum-sucking RIAA bastards.

/I miss my MTV
//Blessings on those who recorded all the old videos
///Even if it was on VHS

I also remember when MTV used to actually play music videos.

Then my cable cable started to carry MTV2 where they once again played music videos, but now it too has little or no music content.

/I had such a crush on Martha Quinn...

2006-01-25 08:58:54 PM
I woulda hit Erica Em (sp?)

2006-01-25 08:59:58 PM
I hope they release the state on dvd. That would make up for the years of bad programming.

BarkingPumpkin: Will there be more Honk Bag?

Oh, count on it!

2006-01-25 09:01:25 PM
I wonder what would happen if someone actually attempted to create a new music video channel that would compete alongside MTV that did not include;

Pandering to the ignorant hip hop masses
Pandering to tweens and their misinformed spending habits
Third rate "scripted" dating and reality shows

The final question: Would it be successful? A music channel that is geared towards genuine music lovers and an slighlty older demographic than the one MTV attracts?

2006-01-25 09:01:32 PM
Sounds like some washed-up cable channel is too big for its britches. Leadership position, my ass.

2006-01-25 09:02:17 PM
/misses Jerry Todd.

2006-01-25 09:03:31 PM
Yo! MTV Raps

World Premiere Videos

Closet Classics

MTV was cool when I was in High School. Not so much now

2006-01-25 09:03:38 PM
I may be too young to remember when MTV played videos, but Daria was the shiat.

2006-01-25 09:03:59 PM
donald pleasance fetishist: I woulda hit Erica Em

That's Much Music. They are required by law to play music videos, but I'm sure if they could have, it'd be just as bad as MTV is now.

2006-01-25 09:05:29 PM
The Head was the best show ever on MTV. Nothing beats a guy with a purple alien living in his head...

"That ain't no raisin, thats an alien" great quote...

2006-01-25 09:06:41 PM
You know, I bet I'd watch music videos more if the videos were interesting. Innovative and exciting, maybe. Today, the DJ's all like, "HERE IS THE FOUR SAD LITTLE BOYS WITH THEIR HIT RAINING SOUL MIASMA." And then The Four Sad Little Boys come in, "I AM STANDING AROUND. HERE IS MY GIRLFRIEND. WE ARE BREAKING UP. IT IS RAINING (SOUL MIASMA!) BECAUSE I AM SAD. FEEL MY MISERY. RAINING (SOUL MIASMA!)"

Oh, that's right, the music still sucks.

2006-01-25 09:07:50 PM
Zippythechimp

Kennedy?

/MTV sucks except for Jackass and Beavis and Butthead

2006-01-25 09:08:22 PM
What's the name of that guy who did the MTV news? Not the old guy, Kurt, but the other one.

Anyway, I always thought he looked like a badly-disguised vampire.

BRING BACK REMOTE CONTROL!!!

2006-01-25 09:18:30 PM
For current videos there's MTV-Hits, but for good videos from back in the day, VH-1 Classic is all you need.

2006-01-25 09:19:24 PM
yeah dude sure

I remember "3 South". It made no attempt to disguise the fact that it was incredibly stupid, but it was quite funny nonetheless.

/Hasn't watched MTV in years either.
//Occasionally watches VH1 though.

2006-01-25 09:20:07 PM
you mtv fools know about their "wrestling promotion" that theyre gonna slap wwe in the head with?

/oh thisll be farking priceless

MTV sux green donkey male appendages!

2006-01-25 09:22:20 PM
Bring back that thing they used to do back in the beginning. You know, that thing that made it all magical and new.

Duran Duran videos a hundred times a day. Goodman's addiction to Jeri curl. Martha blowing reading a cue card over and over. Terrible video effects. Cameo's red plastic codpiece. Paula Abdul.

Yeah. Why can't they be as good as all that any more?

2006-01-25 09:23:20 PM
Cancelling MTV's Downtown (in case you don't know, it was a 1999 cartoon show based on "real life stories" of NYC) and putting episodes of Road Rage and The Fake World in it's place got me pissed. Then turning Daria into the show Friends in it's 5th season did it in for me.
