Is it just me or does anybody else find that reading anything in CHUD by Devin Faraci similar to scraping rusty nails across a blackboard and then jamming them into your ankles?

There's a fine line between being a wry, cyincal smartass and just being a mean-spirited asshat. Devin pole vaults over that line on a daily basis. (But admittedly, this is perhaps the wrong forum to make that complaint.)

Eh, whatever. CHUD jumped the shark since becomeing Hellboy whores anyway.

Well, the Jews control Hollywood, and the Jews are God's Chosen People, so I guess it makes sense.

Although I gotta say, I was playing God as a guy in a white suit long before Morgan Freeman came on the scene...

Thanks, Jim Carrey. We definitely wanted this a LOT more than a decent "Mask" sequel, or the long promised "Walter Mitty" movie, both of which would be horribly derivative like ALL Hollywood crap is, but would still most likely be at least watchable.

Then again, I just saw a promo for "Big Momma's House 2", so I guess it could be worse.

I REALLY have to dust off that screenplay. Hollywood SUCKS.

You mean you don't like it when a writer derails his article with a rant that is unrelated to the subject at hand?

I didn't read TFA. I clicked the link, saw the byline, and clicked right back.

Oh, you were referring to me. First of all, I did pay lipservice to the topic of the thread in the slashies. Secondly, how much is there to discuss over Bruce Almighty 2? Hollywood is out of ideas. Moving on.

More? Are there already sequels I don't know about? I never even saw the first, just find that a little shocking.

No, that's what the article author does in the first paragraph. I wasn't referring to you. It's all good in the forums.

Given a decent script and a few good comedy writers, and even a mediocre comedy director at that.. Steve would be perfect as Maxwell Smart.

He has the look, and the right delivery for the role.

2006-01-24 12:46:27 PM
Only an act of Jebus could make Steve Carrell any less funny. The whole "I say silly stuff with a straight face!" schtick should be punishable by death.

2006-01-24 12:47:06 PM
They were going with Bruce Almighty... Then! until Jim Carrey turned down the role.

2006-01-24 12:49:57 PM
Steve Carrell, who unjustly won the Golden Globe for his work on the American version of The Office (while the show is funny, Carrells character has none of the charm of Ricky Gervais, and just comes across as a sociopath due to Carrells deadpan performance, and not as a desperate loser)

Methinks ol' Devin has his head up his ass. Carrell is brilliant in the role and it would have been shiate if he just aped Gervais office manager from the BBC series.

That being said, the first film was a still-born turd.

Good to hear. You're enough of a TF veteran that I would have been disappointed if you were genuinely criticizing me for what is routine in almost every Fark forum. Please excuse my snark.

And for the record, it's not Devin's digressions so much but his ugly tone in general. I do not believe that columnists should play the Pollyanna glad game and say only nice things about people, but as I said in the earlier post, there is a difference between being a smartass and being an unlikable asshat. See Maddox's Best Page in the Universe for an example for the former. He's caustic, but he's funny and always makes a point as to why he rants on a particular topic. Devin merely drops trou and takes a witless dump on everything. Got old real fast.

But like I said, I lost interest in CHUD during the non-stop Hellboy lovefest.

The Big Momma's House 2 trailer seemed really awful when I saw it in the theatre... till it was followed by the trailer for The Benchwarmers. The BMH2 looked like Citizen Kane in comparison.

Catherine Bell gave birth about 4 months prior to filming. That's why her jubblies were so huge. Pity there wasn't more of them in the movie, since it would have made it infinitely more tolerable.

The ONLY funny scene in Bruce Almighty was when Jim took over Steve Carrell. Steve has this odd Danny Kaye delivery about him, and as someone who can still find Danny Kaye funny, that says a lot.

Why are all "new" movies just sequels or remakes?

And if they're gonna remake so many movies, why don't they remake Sherlock Holmes into a decent film?

2006-01-24 02:00:20 PM
This "Honk Bag" idea seems to be catching. I think some enterprising idiot needs to do a five minute mpeg and let it tour the Internet.

I bet it would outperform "Hampster Dance".

2006-01-24 02:09:49 PM
Because Hollywood can't make a remake better than the original. Its simple universally accepted physics. Hollywood makes a good movie once, then milks it with sequels... then 30 years later makes a remake to pry more money from those people who still have fond memories of the original, and from all the people who've seen the now classic movie and think it can be done better in modern times. Then there is great dissapoint from the masses, but the Hollywood gets ever richer...

Who in gods name ever approved the Blair Witch Project... I saw it in the cheap theatre and I still wanted my money back!

2006-01-24 02:13:27 PM
Sherlock doesn't need a remake, Basil Rathbone was perfect. Plus there are all those TV adaptations including one not that old with that's his name, the bad guy from Inspector Gadget.

I support anything Steve Carell and/or Steve Oedekerk (Kung Pow) is involved with. Sequel to a Jim Carey movie he doesn't return for or not.

2006-01-24 02:21:44 PM
Blair witch was an indie, made for $35,000. It wasn't greenlighted so much as it was mortgaged/student-loaned into existence. Yeah, it was essentially plotless and pointless, but it was at least a different style and feel of movie as compared to the then (as now) crop of exsplosion-fests, unwanted remakes and carbon copy romantic comedies. It made more money for having one semi-original facet than any substance.
