I met the Femmes after a concert in 2004. Nicest bunch of guys you'd ever want to meet. They were part of a festival show. I've never been the biggest fan of their music, but after finding out what kind of people they are, I have tons of respect for them.

I think your mother might be mistaken. It is true that "(ils) "violent is the third person plural of the verb "Violer" (to rape)and that Femmes is Women but in this case I think that we can assume that it is the english adjective "Violent". So the name of the band is a combination of english and french. Femmes Violentes. Violent Women. I might be wrong but, hey...
