Can we call it... Neo Orleans?

/I mean, traditionally, after the first city is whiped out you rebuild it as "new" when that's whiped out you either rebuild it as "New New" (as in New New York Futurama) or as Neo (as in Neo Tokyo any anime, ever)

Governor of Louisiana: When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp. But the fourth one stayed up. And that's what you're going to get, Lad, the strongest castle in all of England.

You can have two of the following:

Cheap
Quick
Good

Only two, never three.

Shouldn't be too hard. Just change the building code to require a lifeboat installed on the roof of each residential unit, and a couple of life preservers on every car.

2006-01-22 07:32:39 PM
apparently we 'owe' it to new orleans. how bout we stop building in vunerable areas, not just in NO, but every else along the coast.

accept a gov't buyout or fend for yourself, i say.

sorry people, life isn't fair.

2006-01-22 07:35:57 PM
I myself am ready for them to start getting back there.

What about California-- do we stop building there because there are earthquakes? Do we stop building in Florida because of hurricanes, the Midwest because of flooding, the east coast because of hurricanes? Or just the gulf coast?

i say tear the levies down then build where there isnt water

I gotta agree with oukewldave. And make the people doing the building pay for it, not the rest of us.

You know, right after Katrina hit I was making comparisons to Pompeii. Some of those places that got hit are just plain gone for good. When- and IF- we can consider New Orleans adequately recovered, when it's all over it will be about half the size New Orleans was pre-Katrina. You'll have the French Quarter, the skyline, and a lot of area that's been reclaimed for good by Mother Nature.

As long as we make it a chocolate city, as God meant it to be. And by "chocolate city", of course I mean when you mix chocolate with milk to make a delicious drink! How else could I mean it?

This is a flood zone. This city is below water. If you own the land you should have the right to build a house. However, we, the other tax payers of this country, do not owe you special treatment.

If you can't afford insurance for living below sea level move. If you don't want to be flooded, move to higher ground. We do not owe you money so you can live wherever the hell you choose. Stop whining. Accept the consequences of living in a flood zone or move. It was a flood zone before you were born, so you can't say you didn't know!

That is all.

2006-01-22 07:47:16 PM
I heard on the radio that homeowners were complaining that the new building code might require the first floor to be just garage. That puts the PEOPLE up above the water if it floods.

Residents are biatching because they aren't willing to even do THAT MUCH to protect themselves. This isn't about help. It is apparently about handouts and entitlements.

Gimme gimme gimme. Where da free stuff at?

2006-01-22 07:47:53 PM
Some evacuees at the "Louisiana Speaks" forums also worried that officials have no real plans to restore certain areas, such as New Orleans' impoverished Lower 9th Ward.

Here's a real mindbender--how much will it cost to restore poverty?

2006-01-22 07:51:12 PM
mama's_tasty_foods

In Iowa a few towns were moved to higher ground. Residents were given the ulitmatum of stay and fend for yourselves, or move.

If New Orleans wants to rebuild below sea level, fine. Next time they shouldn't get a dime of gov't funds for their stupidity.

Building on the coast and below sea level is just dumb.

2006-01-22 07:52:58 PM
they'll probably let them rebuild whatever they want and throw in some Escalades just to "prove" they arent racist. i like when stuff like that happens...

2006-01-22 07:53:06 PM
It's silly to imagine that anyone would rebuild New O literally, trying to replace each lost neighborhood and business. Ain't gonna happen.

And, since they won't, you can be certain that the city won't be rebuilt to create pockets of poor, helpless people. Not intentionally. Although you'd expect areas of lower-income housing. That's normal in any city.

So, I'd expect folks with money - even moderate amounts of money - to come in and try to rebuild, trying to anticipate disasters (like folks in the Oakland, CA hills expect fires and earthquakes).

It won't be a replication of the old city, and it will only be done by people with money, trying to anticipate making a profit off their investments (architects/contractors/etc).

So I'd expect a smaller, more affluent city - at least at the beginning, until the poorer folks can figure out a way to migrate home. (But why would they, since they're presumably making some sort of living where they're at now?)

Why more affluent? The only folks left will be the ones with money to rebuild. That influx of cash will help raise everyone's standard of living.

A rising tide raises all boats.

hahahahahahahahahaha

My wife loves Walker, Texas Ranger and I remember watching with her and the villian was some loser hopped up on super steroids.

He actually made the same bionic-man shounds 'Da-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na'.

I laughed so hard, I was ordered out of the room.

Bush is foiled again. When he blew up the levees, he never thought they'd want to rebuild the place.

2006-01-22 08:00:20 PM
the levees were built like crap. Not the earth ones, but the old, rotted, wooden ones.

end of story.

You know what folks? Fark Louisiana. There. I said it. Done.

I never lived there. Never visited there. Never had any interest in going there. I don't care that some hurricane came and farked up the place and that the victims were people who didn't leave when they were told and now feel entitled to money that they didn't earn in the first place. Life sucks and it seems to suck hardest in Louisiana.

Louisiana is just a backward state that has the dual, dubious distinction as being both the most obese state in the union along with the most handgun crimes. The politics in the state are probably among the most corrupt in the nation (with Texas and Florida only surpassing Louisiana in total political asshattery). Racism is rampant (David Duke, anyone?)

There are 49 other states in the USA I'd rather visit.

I don't remember who linked the YTMND with New Orleans' mayor making his 'chocolate New Orleans' remark and the background being Homer in chocolate town, but that was probably the funniest thing I've seen all week.

Espertron speaks wisely.

I think we can make an excellent case for never extending our personal compassion to any place we've never been, or to anyone whom we've never met.

For instance, when I see someone who's got a flat tire, I just keep driving. Fark them if they can't carry a spare, or don't know how to change it themself, or don't have roadside assistance. I don't care what happens to them.

Frankly, they're just not like us, are they? We stick together, eh?
