I hope it turns round of its own accord. They're saying if not, it might have to be put down to avoid any possible suffering.

Ancient news. I posted this 3 hours ago with a less funny headline. Wake up in there, someone.

Poor thing.

2006-01-20 11:05:32 AM
The biggest danger to the whale is likely to come from the odd harpoon-toting Japanese tourist fancying a late lunch.

2006-01-20 11:06:23 AM
On the Thames, or in the Thames?

For about the squillionth time, the Thames is clean. Over the years dolphins and seals have been spotted in the Thames, sperm whales have been seen in the Thames Estuary and porpoises have been seen near Vauxhall Bridge, in central London.

"We have had a recovery but the public does not realise it."

To the untrained eye it might appear to be a moving mud bath, but the water has improved enough to sustain 121 species of fish.

In 1960, a 20-year project began to extend London's major sewage treatment works and improve river quality. Now the Thames is one of the cleanest metropolitan estuaries in the world.

It is a sea change from 1957, when the Natural History Museum declared it "biologically dead" or incapable of supporting life.

Anyone remember Humphrey the Wrong Way Whale? He was a humpback. Back in 1985, he swam up the Sacramento River. And then 5 years later, he did it again.

2006-01-20 11:20:18 AM
"Aquaman, I have returned from my journey up the Thames. The Queen continues to refuse your invitations to tea. And this is the last time I fill in for that lazy dolphin."

Oh yeah! Humphrey! My third grade class was enraptured with him. I think they ended up writing a book about him too for kids.

2006-01-20 11:23:27 AM
Lady J: For about the squillionth time, the Thames is clean.

Londoners have been squatting off in the thing sinces the Roman era. Does anyone know the half-life of a turd?

2006-01-20 11:25:02 AM
Half life of a turd is less than a year. Much less. A month? A week in good conditions.

2006-01-20 11:26:35 AM
It's just nessie on holiday!

2006-01-20 11:27:10 AM
Anyone see the report from Japan(pops) about the giant jellyfish that have clogged up the shipping lanes?

2006-01-20 11:27:18 AM
The whale has come within yards of the banks and has crashed into an empty boat causing slight bleeding.

I'm even more amazed that boats can bleed.

2006-01-20 11:28:06 AM
WHen I was in London people were afraid to dig a new tube line through the Thames because of old German bombs.
