hey, if Gen. Patton believed in reincarnation then it's good enough for me.

yeah, i walked into this parenting thing with my eyes wide open, i love my son more than anything else, but he's a kid, he's not goign to save the world or play quarterback in the nfl.

i'll love him, discipline him, teach him things, and let him discover the world, most importantly i'll teach him HOW to think not WHAT to think . . .to a degree

how many of these "indigo kids" do you see tear assing through a store, destroying shiat, and having their parents excuse the behavior with "oh, he's just acting out, he's creative" no lady, he's a brat who needs his precious little ass spanked

As much as I dislike what I term as "Hippy" Music, and as much as I detest Karaoke, I am unable to not like this song based on the sole reason that my father's cousin's brother's nephew's former roomate (Okay -- my former roomate) and her friend sang this song so amazingly while doing Karaoke.

Hmm. That story went nowhere. Dammit.

Shameful.

Anyone who knows anything about child development (or has a child who is over the age of 4) should know that they make up the most bizarre stuff! You can't call it lying per se because children don't know the difference between reality and fantasy until about the age of 6. 4-year-olds are great because they have the vocabulary to articulate the bizarre crap that is in their heads but still have very active imaginations.

Although these parents have imaginations more active than their offspring if they believe this pile of bull. Maybe they want to visit the website I just set up to buy the magic beans I've got for $1000 a pop?

Since we cannot prove or disprove myriad of spiritually related things, I tend to have an open mind about reincarnation.

I did, until everyone claiming to be reincarnated remembered being Joan D'Arc, Napoleon, or ALexander or some other famous person. Some do just believe they were simple non-famous extraordianry persons. But no one says in my former life I mucked horse stalls during the plague and all the horses suffered from dysentery.

Little do they know that the Eastern religions are right, and they might be reincarnated dung beetles.

Great. The best way I can think of to make an already ill-mannered, attention-challenged, narcissistic child even worse it to teach them they are supernatural and have a higher purpose which must be catered to.

Feh.

I'd love to have a kid someday. But having to contend with raising one in today's social environment would be a real challenge. Do you raise the child correctly, thereby making him/her different from their nutty peers, or do you cave in to the norm of the day?

2006-01-19 10:54:23 AM
So, your child is special and evolved in some vague way that can't be nailed down, yet a big pain in the ass in a way that everyone can see. Yeah that's great.

2006-01-19 10:55:19 AM
The only (ONLY) good story about reincarnation I ever heard was some kid who claimed to be a dockworker in Belize who'd been hit and killed by a stack of pallets. And there's no good evidence that was true, just that it seems like a wholly unusual thing for parents of a little rich white boy to make up.

Slappy Kincaid

Ok...I never believed in this crap until he came along. I have 5 other kids and all are special in their own way (as any parent would admit) but he has consistently freaked me and my family out.

1. His first word was hannah. He would stand in our dining room, point to the ceiling and say hannah. There is nothing on that ceiling not even a light fixture. 9 months after he was born wy wife become pregnant again. We had a girl. We did not have a name picked out. We always waited to see the kids first. He took one look at her 30 mins after she was born and said" Hannah". We had to go with that name.

2. When he was 3 he told my mother that her father's cough has gotten better. My Grandfather died when I was 2 and I don't remember him at all. He died of a heart attack. When he said this to my mother she was freaked out. I did not know it but he suffered from black lung disease for many years

Alot of other things he has said are just plain weired. He is a great kid, well behaved and very polite. Sounds like crap, I know, but I live with the kid every day and he is pretty spooky sometimes.

Some of their other stuff in my opinion is very good. "Gallileo" is a song about reincarnation. Anyway, they are both fine musicians. But what do I know, I like hippy musice like "Yes" and "Pink Floyd'.P

Pollexabator: I think you and I are on the same page.

It's an extension of the larger phenomenon of the "deification of the individual". We've become a society of individuals who are each our own higher power, moral authority - indeed, even reality. And now we're teaching this self-centered, near-solipsistic mentality to our children.

The symptoms of this egocentric meme are everywhere.

Can anyone find the Eric Konigsberg New Yorker article on Brandenn Bremmer?

I do believe that there is a new breed of slightly autistic children that are gifted in some ways (more aware of people's feelings and so on), but are limited in other ways (inability to develop in socially, etc.)... but to attribute it to some new agey spirituality bullshiat is a bit much. The kids are being raised in environments which turn them into little prodigies. They are adapting to an age where everything around them bombards them with pure information. That's not some gift from god. That's evolution muthafarkers!

What happend to that kid who, at something like the age of 4-5, started talking about "his" experiences over the Pacific as a fighter pilot in WWII?

Supposedly he knew details that this kid could NEVER have found out through reading, history channel, etc. I read that they brought him to meet some of the actual pilots who served in the same squadron as him, or their kids, and this little kid knew their nicknames, their kill totals, names of girlfriends back in '44, etc.

Of course, it could have been his screwed-up parents feeding him massive amounts of information but the sheer volume leads me to believe not.

Maybe someone else knows more about this?

When I worked at a bookstore in Orlando, I had a regular customer who would come in with her unruly child. The mother would corner me for hours at a time to talk about witchcraft and paganism*, because I was the only one with the patience to deal with her and I had some knowledge of what she was talking about. Meanwhile, her daughter, who must have been about three, would tear around the store laughing and shouting and pulling books onto the floor. The mother never said a word to her, and I had a huge mess to clean up when they finally left. On one visit when the child was being particularly "spirited" the mother whispered to me in her possibly fake British accent "You know, I've been told she is an Indigo Child." I just nodded and smiled and made some vaguely positive sound -- my usual response to her, which she interpreted as my great interest in her babbling. She never explained what she meant, and I just thought it was a nicer way of saying "special needs child." Later I found the phrase on the internet, and learned that Indigo Child meant "Parent passing on social ineptness and vague spiritualism to child who can't understand the concept and thinks it's just a license to be a terror." Good job!

I think Indigo Angel Savior Eco-utopian Monster Children need to be popped in the mouth and told to sit the hell down.

*All you good Pagan folk out there, don't leap to defend. All she ever bought were spell books. You know the kind of "pagan" I'm talking about here.

I don't think that you see what that strict parentstyle does until the "kid" grows up. Or a person who believes that they are reincarnated. What about all of the well mannered baby boomer kids who believe that they were reincarnated?
I see people who say that about their kids but I want to see a grownup get into this.

Agents Mulder and Scully surrender:

SCULLY: Do me a favor, Mulder. Let me say it. Reincarnation.

MULDER: Metempsychosis, transmigration, reimbodiment, call it what you will.

SCULLY: All based on the coincidence that Michelle Bishop and Officer Morris both practice the obscure art of paper folding?

MULDER: Well, what about the composite drawing and the dolls and the fact that Michelle was witness to two deaths that can be tied to Charlie Morris?

SCULLY: So what, you think he's back like Peter Proud to avenge his murder?

MULDER: It's not so far-fetched, Scully. Reincarnation is a basic tenet of many major religions.

SCULLY: That still doesn't explain how an eight-year-old girl can kill two grown men.

MULDER: Well, individuals with strong past-life memories often exhibit enhanced psychic abilities - ESP, telekinesis.

SCULLY: So where does that leave us?

MULDER: One short step away from proving the pre-existence of the human soul.
