Someone post a link to that Onion article.

Seriously, why post in this thread at all if that's all you have to say? Go jerk off to your lack of a television feed.

It's a shame AD is gone, but at least it's over before it got bad. It's always going to be funny to the people that enjoyed it, so that's a great thing.

King of the Hill is completely underrated, and should have had a better time slot while it was on the air.

I forgot Malcolm was even on, and That 70's show has been bad for a few years as far as I could tell.

Well, five. Jackie was a big guy.

You know I will link more and more. It's my goal to make Melissa a FARK cliche. I PS her... host her on my server.. and post on FARK. No problem there. Sorry I offended you with the AD comment but because I like posting pics of Melissa for the general FARK audience I will continue.. until I piss off the mods again and get my HTML taken away.

Any-who.. I'm sufficiently messed up now so I am done with this thread.

Twitch OSX: Like I said... I only watched the show for a few minutes here and there. It got boring quick so I jumped channels.

Dralenan: I only saw Arrested Development once, and I didn't laugh once.

The problem is obvious - you haven't watched enough of the show. To minimally/moderately "get" Arrested Development, you must watch at least 3 or 4 contiguous episodes. To fully "get" Arrested Development, you need to start watching from the pilot episode. This probably is Arrested Development's greatest strength and weakness. It makes for great self-referential jokes ("Her?, the chicken dances, "I've made a huge mistake," illusions, and so on) but also makes it difficult for newcomers to understand all the jokes.

orrinbloquy: PETER: Well, unfortunately, Lois, there's just no more room on the schedule. We've just got to accept the fact that Fox has to make room for terrific shows like Dark Angel; Titus; Undeclared; Action; That 80's Show; Wonderfalls; Fastlane; Andy Richter Controls the Universe; Skin; Girls Club; Cracking Up; The Pitts; Firefly; Get Real; FreakyLinks; Wanda At Large; Costello; The Lone Gunmen; A Minute With Stan Hooper; Normal, Ohio; Pasadena; Harsh Realm; Keen Eddie; The Street; American Embassy; Cedric the Entertainer; The Tick; Louie; and Greg the Bunny.

Irony no that they've got only like two of those shows on nowadays eh...

IMO someone should give Fox's CEOs some deluxe-sized, steel wool-coated enemas until they start realizing that we don't want more sh*t like "America's Next Top Model" and "Ice Skating With Mental Midgets"...

AD doesn't deserve to be cut after only 3 seasons, it's way too well written and a heck of a lot funnier than a lot of the stuff that's on currently. Malcolm I can't really give a gigantic hairball about... There's quite a few of the older episodes (the second part of Lois' 5th kid's birth was on tonight and had me rolling off the bed with Reese's "We'll come back when your udders are ready" line), but the new ones are getting stale with the cast growing so old...

That 70's Show... Meh... I find it funny occasionally, but it's darn rare that I ever watch it.

I'm willing to bet good money that most of the people bashing AD and claiming that they have seen episodes of the show to validate their opinion, have actually only seen a few short clips of it. They probably didn't know what to make of a sitcom that doesn't exactly fit the mold of a typical laugh-tracks-laced sitcom, so they outright reject it.

Since there seems to be an overwhelming opinion that disagrees with them, they became defensive, and exaggerating their claims of familiarity with the show to have more exprience with the show than they actually do to give their voices more credit than it really deserves.

This of course doesn't apply to AD, but to many other shows. It's fascinating how predictable and transparent some people are.

idontthink..

Yea.. I conform to your thesis.. however, I seriously did try. I shiat you not. I heard how it was getting all these awards and blah blah blah.. so I tried on several occasions. But when I started watching, I felt bad. You know how when somebody does something stupid.. usually on TV and you feel bad? .. like you did that? Thats how I felt watching that show. Like "wtf? what are they doing? What are they talking about?".. come on!? Bring on a joke SOMEWHERE. Make me smile. Make me want to watch. Dont base your jokes on things from the first show.. cuz I wont get it! Thats the problem. Anyway if i had any more Melissa pics that were "original" I would put em up for you.

2006-01-19 01:30:40 AM
Uh.. OZ was one of the best shows on HBO.. they ended and nobody picked that up. I can guarantee that HBO or .. well maybe Showtime but I doubt it will pick up AD.. not enough money in it. Hell.. if Fox or whoever dropped it... why would HBO or Showtime pick it up? MAYBE a network cable channel like Comedy Central did with Family Guy but I even doubt that.

2006-01-19 01:31:52 AM
That 70s Show is one of my favorites. It jumped the shark after the kids graduated from high school. The show stagnated and now 2 of the crucial castmates are gone. It's over.

2006-01-19 01:34:24 AM
I have to wonder if so many of the people bashing these shows have ever even watched anything beyond the commercials for them.

Obviously comedy is a really subjective thing, but I think Malcolm is a lot smarter and funnier than it would appear to be. Some of the jokes are really clever and observant, and it does have a very surreal quality which I like. I only recently rediscovered it, and I'll be sorry to see it go.

That '70s Show has a very sitcom-y feel to it that you can either tolerate or not. I liked the characters enough to find it worth watching. But it was doomed as soon as Tohper and Ashton left. They were foolish for even letting it drag on after that. I haven't seen it since then, but I can't imagine how it can work minus two of the primary characters.

Arrested Development... I imagine I would have liked it if I'd seen if from the beginning, but I always found it hard to get into, not knowing what the hell was going on. Kind of how I felt about Scrubs before I rewatched it from the first episode. It would be nice if that show would last another season, but it's not looking good, especially since NBC now has Earl and The Office to take up the slack left by Will & Grace.

Huh... I never realized I watched so much TV.

2006-01-19 01:45:24 AM
It jumped the shark after the kids graduated from high school.

That was also sort of what stretched reality. When the show began, it was 1977 (they all saw "Star Wars" in the first season, and no, I looked that up, thank you) and everyone was probably sixteen or so -- meaning the kids were born in 1961. And then, they somehow make it into college, and manage to start hitting 19 and 20 without the decade rolling over. Okay, I hear there were some good drugs in the 70s, but even that's a little much. (And how the hell did Kelso even have the time to become a cop? It's not like you just walk in and apply for the job.)

Hm. Maybe, in the last episode, they'll borrow from M. Knight Shamalamadingdang's "The Village", and it turns out that everyone is actually living in a fake 70's village that's been isolated from the post-nuclear holocaust of 2010 outside, which is why it never seems to be later than 1978.

Hey, that twist couldn't be worse than the current season...

And yet they don't cancel crap like American Idol, Trading Spouses, and Nanny 911. Further proof how stupid most TV viewers are, based on the reasoning Fox doesn't cancel shows with high viewership.

2006-01-19 01:47:49 AM
One more thing about AD, I think too many people classified it as a typical sitcom like Seinfeld, or Friends, or whatever else. For me, AD is more similar to Family Guy than any other sitcoms it is normally compared to. Too many events are beyond even the absurdities of a common sitcom.

I think that might be the reason why some people reject AD. Makes me wonder how many more people will like it if they approached it like they would with Simpsons or Family Guy.

Bummer. I'll miss Malcolm and That 70's Show. You kinda had to grow up in the 70's to appreciate the show -- otherwise its just not the same.

Agreed that Arrested Development is about as funny as anal fissures -- rates right up there with Seinfeld and Raymond.

Hopefully Everybody Hate's Chris will take off on UPN> Its funny as hell, but I'm getting tired of watching the same 6 episodes.

JB-NoHo,

"And then, they somehow make it into college, and manage to start hitting 19 and 20 without the decade rolling over. Okay, I hear there were some good drugs in the 70s, but even that's a little much."

Please.

When you pitch a show, you pitch a concept. You really have no idea what the show will be in ten, five, even two years from now (sometimes, even after three or four episodes, to be totally honest). You just want to get it sold...you'll figure the rest out later.

"M*A*S*H" lasted longer than the Korean War.

"Happy Days" ended because Joanie grew up to love Chachi.

Life goes on and so does TV...unless it eventually moves to the internet.

I love how the options on TV are either "Arrested Development" or "Football in the Groin." There is no choice other than AD out there. Anything person who didn't like AD must, by default, love Ethnic Mismatch Comedy #644, Reality TV, or the latest dumb husband/hot wife show.

You misunderstood me, and that's partly my fault. I am saying that the absurdity(level of craziness of the gags, if you will) of the humor of AD is more similar to that of Family Guy than Seinfeld. I am not claiming the quality of the jokes are the same, nor am I saying that one is better than the other.

I think both shows are equally funny, in different ways. Kind of like prime ribs are different from spare ribs. But I love both equally.

Yeah, that show was pretty good, and the suckiness of seeing a pretty good show end prematurely was compounded exponentially by the cliffhanger season finale.

I barely even remember what the show was about now, but I was definitely pissed at the time.
