Old

2006-01-17 11:18:48 PM
This was kick ass 3 years ago. Maybe the story is that it actually works now.

2006-01-17 11:42:05 PM
It's old and doesn't work from what I read.

2006-01-18 12:41:15 AM
Two points:

* If it was infrared, you wouldn't see it.

* 2 hours of battery life is weak.

Wait. three points...

* This is not new.

/but cool headline

Um, Im gonna side with everyone else and say that this is new.

This was in my Maxim like a year ago, I'm sure it was around for years before that..

Old.................

2006-01-18 12:42:45 AM
Major issue is that your fingers cast shadows in the course of your typing, preventing you from seeing lower keys.

2006-01-18 12:43:21 AM
Old and Busted.

OK, once my fingers are on the home row, and my index fingers are on f and j, why do I need to seeeee the keys?

Is touch typing a lost skill? Maybe the future is computers sans keyboards and all just deal with repeating things until the Komputer hears it right.

Everyone is being too nice. The headline sucks too. Whoa, a headline with "laser" and "shark" in it. Who could have ever come up with THAT!

To be cool, they'd need to make one of these that emits neutrinos which cause the table-top to glow, but pass right through your fingers. Then you'd be able to take something that was akin to a Type II supernova to Starbucks!

2006-01-18 12:54:41 AM
Or you could just use a fold up keyboard...

Rotten_Peaches: Is touch typing a lost skill?

It ain't the only lost skill.

A manager I worked with used to hold a conversation while touch typing. It was unnerving.

The other 99% I know can't touch type at all.

My typing is half by touch. I've been typing so damned long that I cn tpe without lookin at the keyboar dmcuh

Also, I'd just like to point out that this is old news.

Granted, but if you don't need to see the keys why have glowy projecty ones in the first place? Also, I imagine touch typing gets a lot harder on a bar.

KidneyStone: A manager I worked with used to hold a conversation while touch typing. It was unnerving.

I can do that.

But my speed drops to around 60 WPM when I'm talking and typing at the same time (instead of my regular 100 WPM).

/Also, I can't type for shiat on a laptop keyboard, 40 wpm tops.

//Also can't type for shiat on those split/angled keyboards either, ergonomic my ass

///Also never had any problems with carpal tunnel, 20 years of fapping typing has ensured that I don't have limp wrists.

TheIronJef:

Good point. I need the little nubs on the f and j so I know where I am. Without those little nubs, I'd need to see the keys so I know where to put my fingers. Distraction is also a problem; if I see gibberish on the screen, I know it's time to check hand placement.

lordargent:
Yes, notebook keyboards are horrid for those who learned to type on typewriters (me) or full size keyboards. However, the sheer coolness of technology like notebook computers amazes a guy like me. My first computer class used paper tape (tehsuxorzzz as you youngsters might say)

/I was in highschool when calculators (Intel 4004) first appeared, the first one my dad bought for his business cost $125 and was about as useful as the 4-function calculators given away for free at gas stations, banks, etc.

Oh hell yeah... I've wanted something like that for YEARS.

2006-01-18 01:32:59 AM
Yeah, this is *old*. Even by fark "news" standards.

As for touchtyping: I sort of do. I don't do standard touchtyping, but I hardly ever have to look down at the keys and I use all my fingers (except maybe my pinkies). And I type 70+WPM. Spending most of your teenage years doing 5 IMs at once will do that. Plus my hands just plain don't like the position standard touchtyping requires for the bottom row.

I also hate those farking "ergonomic" keyboards; my personal typing style requires me to be able to reach across the dividing line (I usually hit y with my left index finger), and it's just plain distracting. Although trying to type punctuation on a British keyboard is worse.

And most laptop keyboards do suck. They're too flat and they're too slow to respond. I've tried a bunch of different ones, because I want to get a laptop in the next year or so, and Toshiba's actually feel more like real keyboards.

2006-01-18 01:34:26 AM
I got mine something like a year ago. Hardware works great, software is crap. It's not much faster than T9 input for SMS chat stuff, but if you need to SSH into a server and fix something it's much faster.

2006-01-18 01:35:26 AM
Has anyone mentioned how old this technology is?

Aye, but I will be buying one of those! (when they come out with an ergonomic (sp?) version.)
