Does anyone else remember those honey macademia nut cookies they used to sell? They were discontinued several years ago. Those were my favourites.

I looked over at the 'headlines' on the top right of the article:

"What's green and sells 200 million cookies per year?"

"Lawmakers consider medical marijuana"

Girl scouts use guilt to sell cookies. My parents did. My mom was a troop leader for my sister's troop and at the stand outside some grocery store they had me walk up to people and beg them to buy some cookies. I was two and a half. My sister won the competition within the troop thanks to me. I never got into the whole cookie selling thing. Probably cause going door to door seemed a little creepy to me.

OK, all of you peanut butter patty lovers, want to know how to get then for less than $5 a box? Here's the recipe:

Take two ritz crackers, and use them to make a sandwich with creamy peanut butter in between. Dip into melted chocolate, allow to dry on waxed paper.

That's it.

I was once walking out of a Fred Meyer in Portland, OR, with a friend, and there was a Girl Scout selling Girl Scout cookies stationed outside the exit. I was about to buy some Thin Mints, but my friend, who is vegan, started interrogating the Scout regarding whether the cookies contained animal ingredients. When she found out they all did, she started berating the girl about all the animal cruelty that goes into producing one box of cookies, and how they should all be ashamed of themselves for supporting such a barbaric industry.

I don't agree with animal cruelty in factory farms, but damn did I want those Thin Mints. :(

emobus, kill your vegan friend. Kill him and consume his remains. If he wants so badly to be an herbivore, he should be ready to accept the consequences, on of which is being preyed upon by carnivores.

Where's the love for the Samoas? Those were always my favorite.

2006-01-08 11:19:21 PM
I remember reading several years ago how tightly controlled the sale of these cookies is. Selling cookies is the ONLY way that any Troop may raise funds and those cookies MUST be purchased from the National Council. There was a troop in Ohio, I think, that baked their own cookies and cakes and had a fundraiser to buy uniforms for a few girls who could not afford to buy them. When the National Council heard about it they came down hard on this Troop, threatening to expell them from membership. Profits from cookie sales pays the "administrative costs" (salaries) of National Council members.

IMO the Little Brownie cookies (Samoas, TagAlongs, etc) taste immensely better than the ABC Bakers (Caramel Delites and Peanut Butter Patties versions of the others). Hugely disappointed when I ended up with the ABC junk one time.

2006-01-08 11:37:58 PM
They're right about girls leaving around middle school, though. I quit around that age because my leader didn't ever do anything with us. Now I'm back working as a camp counselor. One of my co-workers is a troop leader and she takes her girls rock climbing. How cool is that?

BTW, the cookies amount for 70% of the Girl Scouts income.

You forgot one critical ingredient.

Did they do away with the peanut butter patties, or am I just not getting them delivered?

I RTFA, but I didn't see when the sale starts. I'm already craving both of the peanut butter cookies.

And which ones won't have trans-fat?

I got one better:
Frozen Thin Mints crushed up (but chunky still) over vanilla ice cream...mmmmm.....

Is it cookie season yet?
