The company says it is absolutely not marketing to this young a customer. But experts say that in a society where sexuality is omnipresent, young girls inevitably will look to a time when they can become sophisticated young women like those they see on TV.

i have yet to see any of those...

"They are not little girls and they aren't teenagers, but they have a lot of access to sophisticated information about what the media says is beautiful, what is pretty, what is hot and stylish and cool," she said. "They are very visually literate."

literate my arse... most kids today can barely read anything. i remember when i was in english class and hearing the kids sound out the words as they were saying them... in highschool.

In Canada we have a lingere store called "La Senza" - it's like our Victoria's Secret, I guess.

Anyway, a couple of years ago they opened up "La Senza Girl" stores. It makes me ill.

Sure - make clothes for girls, whatever - but don't name a store for young girls after a lingerie store! It's just twisted, in my books.

2006-01-04 07:10:44 PM
visually literate has a different meaning than reading. it means they know what's "in style"

I guess you guys aren't on myspace. This is not surprising in the least.

Also i think the pink collection is the one that's marketed towared *ahem* younger customers.

nocturnity: I know a lot of people that work at VS. One of their lines is specifically pitched towards pre-teens.

I work there on the weekends. We do NOT market towards tweens. The PINK collection, the younger collection, is geared towards the college-dorm crowd. Lounge pants, matching camisoles, etc.

One of the last times I was in Victorias Secret, there was a crowd of, I'll guess, 10-13 year old girls in line in front of me to check out. It took everything in my power to bite my tongue and not tell them all that they are too damn young to be in that store. However, it seems like VS markets to them. The "Pink" line is very juvenile with bright colors and patterns. I guess they are trying to pick up the pre-teen market.

Kids don't get to be kids very long these days

2006-01-04 08:25:55 PM
Well, I had to wear a bra when I was eleven. But it was more the JC Penny kind of bra, not Victoria's Secret. I didn't have much a secret to conceal back then.

I groaned out loud at that.

Since when don't 13 year olds girls want to be older? Marking the PINK line to college age women, using college age women models, ensures that 11, 12, 13 & 14 year old are gonna buy it.

Smokes anyone?

Maybe officially, but they definitely attract the high school and jr. high set too.

On the fashion side, his college students are wearing pajamas to class,
and so are their younger siblings when they can get away with it.

*grumble* Why didn't the co-eds do this back when I was TA-ing? *grumble*

i bet the kids buying this stuff are the same ones that saw buttocks and boobs being flashed at the Orlando Swinger's Party. I knew it would corrupt our youth!!

rose8199: Maybe officially, but they definitely attract the high school and jr. high set too.

Think about it this way: the tweens/younger teens come in with their moms or older sisters...instead of being drawn to the sexy stuff, they want the more conservative, fun stuff, like the older kids.. Also, if they need the bras at that age, at least it isn't push-up...it's just a t-shirt bra.

> in a society where sexuality is omnipresent

this is where the media dummies show their dummyhood.

sexuality is omnipresent.
