Tampa Bay is the least worthy team in the playoffs, IMO. Sure, by the numbers and rules they qualified, but they are so damn inconsistent.

While they are in too tough a division and couldn't get some wins they needed, even lousy Dallas would be a better playoff contender. Parcells knows how to keep games close and give himself a chance of winning.

Main problem with that being Young isn't going to enter the draft.

Except he can't beat the Patriots.

Wait, are you telling me the Jets could end up with a coach who doesn't need a clock management assistant to tell him when to call timeouts? Edwards is a superior players' coach, for sure, but he's a terrible game coach. Even last year, the Jets were a good bad team- 1-5 against teams with winning records, and then they beat a team run by Marty Schottenheimer in the first round of the playoffs. Even if Doug Brien makes one of those field goals in the Pittsburgh game, the Patriots would have crushed them like they did in week 16, 23-7.

In short, it's a good idea to change coaches when your team goes into a down cycle. With Pennington and Martin's cap hell deals, it's time to find a talented assistant, someone like Tim Lewis, give him the reins, and let him go.

/Any QB who wears that green uni will have his arm fall off, though. It's radioactive, and not "good-mutant-power" radioactive.

You're right, but you know why, right? One of Ben's biggest idols is Tom Brady. He gets extremely nervous every time he plays the Pats. He is working on it, though...never underestimate the power of Steel. ;)

I went to Marshall with Chad. It's sad to see your University QB have a string of bad luck like what he and Jets have had.

resistanceisfutile: although the Jets have a history of passing up on good QB's for subpar ones. Can anyone say Ken O'brien!!

Ken O'Brien was a good quarterback, and could have been great if he didn't have five turnstiles in front of him for his career. Catch the '86 Miami@NYJ game on ESPN Classic sometime, that the Jets won 51-45.

It's valid to criticize Edwards lack of clock management skills. Still, he has strengths and has proven himself worthy of coaching in the league. He just needs to keep himself surrounded by good assistants.

One of his big mistakes was firing the defensive coordinator a couple seasons back and keeping the real problem- that lousy bum Hackett. At least he finally stepped down after stinking it up and making horrible play calls for another season.

And second of all, Herm Edwards is one of the best coaches in the league.

What kind of moron would believe that?

BRONCOS!

Oh.

Hmm... let's see... Herm Edwards was hired by the Jets for his first head coaching job in 2001, and he has made the playoffs in 2001, 2002, and 2004. He is the only coach in Jets history with three trips to the playoffs! He also has the biggest playoff victory in jets history, destroying the Colts 41-0. You'll also notice that the only years he didn't make the playoffs, 2003 and 2005, are years where Chad Pennington DIED and couldn't play. Hell, this year they practically had to recruit QBs off the street!

Anyways, I watched a program on Herm Edwards once, and he is definitely a guy that I would want as a head coach. He is actually remarkably similar to Dick Vermeil. Why do you hate Edwards so much?

One game doesn't make you great. Even Vinny had a great game against the Fins.( I love Vinny and think it was great having him a Jet, but..)I am pretty sure I remember that game. But a history of bad passes and bad decisions will be Ken's legacy as a Jet. Yeah they had bad coaches and a OK front line but Marino would have made it better

2006-01-04 02:49:00 PM
Don't go, Herm.

iamjustsittingwatchingthetimegobye-

The Seahawks hardly suck. You clearly have no idea what the hell you are talking about. The only team that has been better this year has been the Colts. They went 3-1 versus the AFC. Granted, they benefitted from weak division rivals but they beat plenty of good teams in the regular season.

Even though it didn't mean squat to Indy, they even beat the Colts. They also beat the Giants, Falcons, and Dallas. The Green Bay loss meant nothing to them as they had nothing to play for.

2006-01-04 02:52:44 PM
resistanceisfutile: Yeah they had bad coaches and a OK front line but Marino would have made it better

I'm not saying that O'Brien would have been Marino. Far from it. I'm also not saying that the one game made him great. He did, however, have a lot to overcome with the teams he was on. He was hardly Muttonhead Testaverde.

2006-01-04 02:52:59 PM
The Bears, Giants and Seahawks are all capable of beating quality AFC teams.

2006-01-04 02:53:46 PM
Any way I hope Herm stays and finishes what he started. I think he has done an amazing job for the Jets. Let's draft Young and get a solid backup for next year so if Chad can't come back or gets hurt again then we have a chance at a good season still that way in 2 years Young will be ready to kick ass!

Bring back Curtis and Law and Oh Yeah the Jets have to restructure Chad's deal other wise we could be down the 49's path for a few years.

2006-01-04 02:56:02 PM
O'Brien was a slouch, IMO. He wasn't mobile, and he sucked at reading defenses. In fact, he'd usually only look at half the field before making a pass.

madcat033: Anyways, I watched a program on Herm Edwards once, and he is definitely a guy that I would want as a head coach. He is actually remarkably similar to Dick Vermeil. Why do you hate Edwards so much?

I hate Edwards in the position of head coach of the Jets because I've watched more than "a program on Herm Edwards once". I've watched every game he's coached with the team, as well as every game for the past 22 years on that team. I've listened to dozens of interviews of him on the radio and on TV. And whenever anything is wrong with the team, somehow it's never his fault.

Before he whacked his defensive coordinator, he "took responsibility" for the defense underperforming by saying that he gave his coordinators too much latitude in managing the offense and defense. Classic "I confess: he did it" move. He's also thrown his players under the bus in the past as well.

He's a lousy game-day manager, screwing up the clock and approaching the game with a philosophy of keeping it close and hoping the other team makes a mistake. This would possibly be OK if he was as great a motivator as people make him out to be. However, if that was the case, why is Santana Moss' first trip to the Pro Bowl in the year after he left the great motivator? Why do the Jets get run on like no one else every year, even with four first-round picks on the DL? Why do they show up in September looking like they skipped July and August?

Let him park his van by some other river and peddle his motivational speaker routine somewhere else. I'd prefer it be in the division, but anywhere outside of the Jets organization is OK by me.

2006-01-04 03:02:15 PM
O'Brien's career numbers weren't horrible, but benefitted greatly from his 1985 season. He threw a lot of interceptions.

2006-01-04 03:05:43 PM
Beemer-

Santana Moss was playing in Paul Hackett's miserable excuse for West Coast offense. He does deserve the blame because did you notice game after game how horrific his play calls were?

Of course, Edwards should have kept the defensive coordinator and fired Hackett as I said. That much was his fault.

KC gets how many draft pics for takin' Herm off they're hands? (I like him but he didn't really get the job done there in NY. Yea, and I know they had injuries as do all teams)

2006-01-04 04:51:15 PM
Herm Edwards is a good coach, except for the managing the clock thing, the getting the players into shape for week 1 thing, and knowing how to evaluate talent thing. Other than that, he's perfect.

/I hope he stays in NY

Fins/Jets games from 80-94 were always entertaining pass-fests - usually good for 750-900 passing yards combined. Every Jets QB has looked great against the Fins. Even Browning Nagle. Hell, Richard Todd looked like the second coming of Daryle (mad bomber) Lamonica against the Fins.

O'Brien wasn't bad. In today's game his closest resemblence is probably Bledsoe. But if Marino had Joe Walton (3rd and long = HB draw for no gain) and Bruce Coslet (3rd and long = screen pass for no gain) on the sidelines, even Marino would've ended up with stats like Dave Kreig.

The Jets future is doomed until they move back to Queens.

(used to have piece of turf from final Shea game - was Bradshaw's last... Jets lost of course)

2006-01-04 05:03:44 PM
looks like the Jets are going into a new stadium with the Giants!! I agree the Jets need to get back to NY.

Anyone see this Mike Ditka video from the 80's. Holy hell is all I can say. This guy should get a job after seeing that, we need more vid's.

Ditka? Umm, the eighties were the eighties. He's washed up, man. He's best off sticking to announcer after his comical tenure with the Saints.

2006-01-04 05:17:41 PM
Did you see his vid the man has talent.

2006-01-04 05:26:41 PM
You are taking something from two decades ago and using it to judge him today. He is an NFL legend, both as player and coach... but his time has come and gone.

He was fired by the Bears in 1992 for sucking. The only good thing that came out of his 1997 comeback with the Saints where he was reduced to tears and admitted he was no longer a good coach was Ricky Williams. Ricky would have gotten into the league anyway... without the Saints having to trade all their draft picks for him. That was just idiotic.

2006-01-04 05:31:31 PM
Furthermore, the 85 Bears would not have been the team they were without Buddy Ryan's defensive wizardry.

2006-01-04 06:16:38 PM
I'm a Chiefs season ticket holder.

I can see this as a good replacement. I like Al Saunders, but look what happened last time the Chiefs went for a coordinator as head coach.

I leave San Diego out of the hatefest because they have Donnie Edwards, still my favorite Chief.

Plus, they don't rub their O-linemen's jerseys down with Vaseline before the game :)

Herm positives: Motivated team well from Mon.-Sat., ran an essentially clean ship, low turnovers, low penalties, teams never quit on him, gave stability to a floundering franchise, made playoffs 3 out of 5 years.

Herm negatives: Horrible game day coach, questionable talent evaluator (Bryan Thomas in the 1st round anybody?), teams never ready for opening day, too loyal to veterans (see Curtis Martin limping halfway through the season this year or the absolute debacle that was the return of Vinny from Elmont).

I think he's gone as far as he was going to go with the Jets and it's time to move on. He's already burned a bunch of bridges with this whole fiasco anyway. I hope they get a few picks and the Jets throw Bradway in for free. Thanks for what you've done and good luck . . .

Early word says Heimerdinger will be the new head coach -- he or Henderson would be fine by me. Please, no recycled coaches (Haslett, Fassel, Capers, Mariucci, etc.)

//still think Todd was god

Giving up a 1st rounder for a coach like Edwards is stupid. He's good, but not great. Still, I don't know who the Jets would prefer. Beemer, who's your choice for coach of the Jets?

/Everyone, please keep underestimating the Broncos this year.

2006-01-04 09:29:26 PM
gargantuan98: Beemer, who's your choice for coach of the Jets?

I don't have anyone that I'm targeting as Herm's replacement. I don't follow the college game at all, so I don't know who the potential candidates are from there, and I don't know who the "hot" prospects in coordinator positions on other teams are. All I really follow closely is the New York Jets, year in and year out.

I'm not unhappy with Herm because I have someone better in mind. I wish I did have someone else in mind, but then I'd probably be further disappointed if we didn't get them. I'm unhappy with Herm because I think that he is objectively a poor head coach.

I hate the Broncos because they're a dirty team. Especially their cheap-shot, chop-blocking linemen. I hate the Raiders because their fans are morons. I don't really hate the Chiefs, they have a few players I like. Anyway, I doubt San Diego fans care much about football rivalries. At the end of the day, they don't live in places like Oakland, Kansas City, or Denver. They live in San Diego.

I'd hate to see Herman go, i think he's a class act all the way, and a decent coach. if the Jets let him go for some re-tread trash like Norv Turner, i will hang myself. a jets fan for over 30 years, i should know better. of course the jets will let a good coach like Edwards walk - they always make the wrong move.

they need to dump Pennington - he had his shot, but 2 rotator cuff injuries in two years = candy arm. he'll be throwing nothing but rainbows - as if he didn't before

DUKE SUCKS

the nfl is a scrap heep for coaches: norv turner, gunther cunningham, jim fassel,....

I understand that the Jets want someone with familiarity with the organization and are asking for Rich Kotite's cell number.
