I am actually a rocket scientist. My lastest project included developing a small chemical propulsion device using sodium bicarbonate and impure dilute acetic acid, which will decompose into carbon dioxide, thus providing this reaction to be used as the core thrust for my rocket. So far, I can lift a US penny over the roof of my house. Next, I will lift myself over the roof of my house in my lawnchair. Look for my Darwin Award in a few weeks.

That is all folks!

Sorry to hear about the miners though, that is very sad.

Ya, just as tragic as the other millions of people that die everyday. Why should we care any more about these guys?

Ok....*imagines*.... right, that was needlessly depressing.

For my next thought I'll imagine drowning a bag of puppies.

Sometimes we forget the number of people who do very dangerous and thankless jobs that make our lives better. Tragedies like this remind me how much we all owe to people we never meet.

This story is different because it's a small town, it's not your usual inter-racial violence and it's not a car crash. Thats why it is getting attention. The same reason why the guys in Quecreek got the attention. You ignorant asshat.

Insult Comic Bishounen: I'll keep that in mind should you or a loved one die in an accident of some kind.

Good. If I die I deserve no more attention than the rest of the people that died at the same time. Look, I'm not saying it isn't sad, or that I don't feel bad for their familys. I just think it is stupid for everyone to freak out about this when it happens every day. To be honest, I think it is pretty sick that the media makes such a big deal out of stories like this. Let the families grieve in peace ffs.

RIP

At the same time, these guys knew what they were getting into. Mines collapsing, exploding, filling with lethal gas/water... TYhese are not new occurnces folks. I tip my hat the the miners for hteir dilligence and accepting such a job. I also hope their families don't get left out in the cold by the company...

CNN = asshats

\(insert totally innapropriate joke here)

2006-01-04 07:39:43 AM
I hadn't seen the news last night that they were supposed to all be alive, until after I'd seen that one was (and I was very happy about that, I didn't expect that anyone would be). After seeing that the family members had been told that they were all alive...it's so sad, I can't even imagine that.

2006-01-04 07:40:02 AM
Yeah, only one still left alive, and he is in critical condition. The earlier report of 12 alive is being called a "miscommunication" which the company did not correct until they had all the facts.

This bit of confusion just adds to an already tragic event. :-(

"Ya, just as tragic as the other millions of people that die everyday. Why should we care any more about these guys?"

10 Deaths = Tragic

1,000,000 Deaths = Statistic

The more deaths there are, the less they matter.

I'm surprised that even one survived. We really need to automate coal mining. It's not that hard to do.

Traxis showed what incredible empathy he has by posting the following,

Ya, just as tragic as the other millions of people that die everyday. Why should we care any more about these guys?"

Actually, you have a point, every single one of those millions of deaths is a tragic loss - some, perhaps, more than others. Personally, I feel sympathy when a beloved family member dies at an advanced age even though my sympathies are more for the families who must now be grieving. In this case there are now hundreds of people who have lost a father, a brother, a spouse or simply a friend and are deeply affected.

One has to wonder if there was anyone like you in that mine and if you understand that people like me would risk death or injury to extract even someone as unsympathetic as you. Many of us look at this situation as "There, but for the grace of God..." and then there are others as you have chosen to illustrate here.

I am somewhat surprised that you didn't biatch about the new welfare mothers that are personally out to ruin your financial future. Of course, it's still early and that thought might not have crossed your mind quite yet.

man i feel sorry for the relatives , this is just sad

2006-01-04 07:44:27 AM
It wasn't the media's fault on this one. People in the miners' hometown overheard authorities talking on cell phones, got excited and spread the word. It's no one's fault. It's just sad.

2006-01-04 07:45:32 AM
RIP miner dudes.

2006-01-04 07:45:54 AM
This just broke my heart. I went to bed last night after watching the joy on all those faces, then woke up to find out that 12 were dead. I just cant imagine being a family who had worried all that time, probably about lost all hope, then think they are alive, just to find out that they were dead.

I do think that we have to be careful not to blame the media on this one. Even the governor came out and said that it was a miracle and that the men were alive. If I was in the news biz, I would consider the governor as a reliable source.

What supposedly happened is that a couple of the relatives received news that the men were found and they were checking for vital signs. They took this to mean that the men were alive, and the news just took on a life of its own from there. The blame, I believe, lies with the company who waited around 3 hours to correct the news. The company officials said that when they found that there was only one alive they wanted to wait to find out who it was first. What a cop-out. To let these people go that long thinking their loved ones were alive.

All in all, my prayers are with the families and with the one miner that has durvived.

Tragedies like this tug at the heart and likely will get ugly politically, media and judicially long before most forget. We went through something similar up here in Canada in 1992, at a little tiny Nova Scotia town called Plymouth.
A tragedy called Westray

2006-01-04 07:48:29 AM
Big news at mine = Media win.
More big news - One found dead = media win.
More big news - 12 found alive = media win.
More big news - Opps mis reported = media win.
More big news - Start the blame game on how it was reported. Guess what Media win.

Can you say job creation and justification?

I say lets all concentrate on praying for the miners and families and ignore the media.

2006-01-04 07:48:33 AM
I've been watching the news this morning and it looks like someone on-site somehow got a message to the relatives that all OR all but one were okay, when in reality the rescue crews reported back they found the miners but still had to check their vitals. Apparently, the people on-site knew within 20 minutes that the initial info was bad, but waited to see HOW bad before reporting back to the families.

Sounds like some well-meaning but very, VERY misguided person thought they'd contact the families ASAP rather than wait for the official communication lines to spread the news slowly but accurately.

Traxis, It's okay that you don't think its important and that you think the media is 'making a big deal out of this' but it is tragic and it is dramatic... Yeah lots of people die in lots of places but these ones are guys whose job it is to go into the ground and get minerals out so society can function. If the drama and tragedy of this story isn't self-evident you're an asshat.
