Forced? Forced!?

I'm tired of all the ingrates, whiners, and biatches. Blessed thou art, Ms. sparkle skull.

Oh sure, it gives her psychic powers, but at what cost? At what cost?

Bullets that are shot straight up, come down with such low force a standard hardhat will stop/deflect them.

Police hope the person who fired the shot will turn themselves in to authorities.

Sweet. Lets see some links on that.

9.8 meter per second per second is the acceleration. So I guess it depends on how high that bullet gets before it lands, and how big it is.

Found out tonight a woman I work with got shot in the shoulder on New Year's Eve by a bullet some yahoo shot in the air, I'm guessing a long way away.

It had decelerated enough not to stay in her body, but enough to leave her with a big ol' bullet hole in her shoulder.

Dumbasses.

Too bad most Hard hats don't protect your eyes when you're looking straight up.

Most bullets shot in the air have plenty enough velocity to seriously injure or kill if they hit a person.

Straight Dope on the issue (pops)

Good luck on that one, guys.

Terminal velocity of a .306 is ~300 fps. They're about 11.7 grams, which means around 44 footlbs.
Getting shot "normally" is around 2400 footlbs.

2006-01-04 12:38:49 AM
fishrockcarving: plenty enough velocity

The weight and aerodynamic cross-section have lot to do with it. A light, flat-nosed or tumbling bullet is going to have much less velocity when it hits. a .45 slug, especially a fully-jacketed one, is heavy and squat. I imagine it falls relatively fast for a bullet.

You accidentally shot an illeagel immigrant in the face and she was later kicked out of the hospital. Yup, this is the one to go down for.

Coolhaus: tumbling bullet

Exit RPM is around 30k for a bullet. I would bet the bullet is still spinning from the initial launch, and therefore cannot tumble.

Shadi: I would bet the bullet is still spinning from the initial launch, and therefore cannot tumble.

My inclination is to think that the bullet would have shed it's rotation at some point, but I imagine that it varies from fired round to fired round, depending on number of twists, barrel length, bullet material/friction, etc.

Honestly, no offense intended, but I don't think you know what you're talking about.

Uhm, this was a .45 round, which generally leave the barrel at around 900 fps.

300!, LOL, we play paintball at 280.

so.....I'm just wondering what Darwin has to say about this.

"Only the lower end of the gene pool actually looks up at the sky during a New Years celebration"

...or something

No offense taken. Gyroscopic effect keeps a bullet from tumbling end over end, this is why we spin projectiles.
First link from Google to explain this: http://www.snipersparadise.com/wound/formulas.htm#gyroscopicstability
30k was for a pistol. Rifles get around 180k.

munkyv22: Uhm, this was a .45 round, which generally leave the barrel at around 900 fps.

Correct, muzzle velocity may be that high, but the "Terminal Velocity" is when air resistance is able to equally counteract gravity's acceleration. So you only get a mere 300 fps.

tasteme: so.....I'm just wondering what Darwin has to say about this.

I believe that the official Darwinian response would be:

"Sometimes, in the struggle for survival, shiat happens."

Terminal velocity of a .306 is ~300 fps.

From the link, Experiments on cadavers and such have shown, for example, that a .38 caliber revolver bullet will perforate the skin and lodge in the underlying tissue at 191 feet per second and that triple-ought buckshot will do so at 213 feet per second.

/.306?

"Cintron, who does not have health insurance, was forced to leave the hospital Tuesday because she cannot afford further care for her injuries, according to the report.

Since Cintron is not a U.S. citizen, she does not qualify for aide, Local 6 News reported."

Doesn't say she is an "illegal immigrant", just not a US citizen. Payment plans? Donations? Transfer to a not-for-profit hospital?

I hope they gave the family some options.

or at least give her a bunch of pain meds gratis. accoding to the article she was in the hospital only 3 days.....the pain would be unbearable untreated

Because we all know we should be wearing our hard hats in front of the tv.
Sheesh.

I understand that.

But if the bullet was shot straight up, at some point it has to come to a stop before it starts to come back down. I'm pretty sure the is plenty of time for it to start "tumbling".

2006-01-04 02:24:22 AM
Fortunately she had the atmosphere to help. In a vacuum, the bullet would have been travelling at the initial muzzle velocity when it hit her.

they could attach a little chain to the bullet then slowly turn the tension up on the chain over a couple of years to pull it out but... seems like putting your head in a vice and hitting it with a hammer would be more fun.

munkyv22: 300!, LOL, we play paintball at 280.

A paintball at 280 is strong enough to destroy an eyeball. And that's just a gelatine capsule.

Or, didn't your paintball instructor ever do the tomato demonstration?

Its the African Swallow and the Coconut theory.

A .45, shot straight up, could lodge a slug in your skull. If you jump eye first, into it at the specific point of impact.

Did anyone else look at her Boobies in the x-ray??

OK, question for every one. I've heard everytime I go past the Empire State Building or the Sears Tower that if I drop a penny (which weights less then a 9 mm bullet) off from the top, it will gain enough acceleration to kill a person if it falls on their head. Now, I'm not math or science teacher, I'm not a teacher at all for that matter, but I'm willing to bet (and I'm not a better) that a bullet shot straight up in the air (and I'm not air) will reach a height much higher than the Sears Tower. So that said bullet falling back down to earth, under the power of gravity, should have the energy and speed to kill anyone if it hits them in the head.

Unless then whole penny thing was just a bunch of shiat said to impress a (then) little kid.

A buddy of mine got shot while watching fireworks on his mom's lap when he was like two, he still has bullet fragments in his head and can't do anything that may lead to a blow to the head, as that could easily kill him. Damn rednecks and guns. Someone call Jack Thompson, this has to have something to do with violent video games!!!

POE - did the penny pass the myth test or not?

Worst-case scenario, she becomes a Bond villain who, as the bullet inches further into her skull, becomes immune to pain and gets stronger and stronger until she dies.
