"In fact, Google could over time become more of a hardware company than anything else," Mr Peck said.

I endorse this product and/or service.

Something Orwellian about this. Three global super-companies...

Oceania and Eastacia has always been at war with Eurasia.
Google and Wal-Mart has always been at war with Microsoft.

*Eastasia

Dammit.

According to the LA Times, Google will announce details of the new device at CES, where it could also unveil its partnership with Wal Mart to sell the machines.

They mean from this story? Those are simply predictions.

2006-01-03 01:42:04 PM
From the 2006 soothsayer article:

"Meanwhile "Wired" magazine co-founder John Battelle, whose crystal ball is closely watched by the Internet technology faithful, says "Google will stumble" due to a bad partnership.."

If there's anything that would shake the faith of the Google-loyal, it's definitely wally world.

2006-01-03 01:45:29 PM
where else would they sell it?

2006-01-03 01:47:13 PM
so how do you pronounce the OS

Goo - OS

or GooOS [goose]

2006-01-03 02:16:47 PM
While this is all speculation, it fits with what they are trying to do. There was rumors a while back that there were partnering with TiVo to do ads with them. Then they started buying tons of dark fibre, almost as much as the regular internet. Dumb terminals, hooked to a TV, costs $200 to buy, with a $10/month service charge. They could make a mint, if they do it right, and it's Google, they haven't done much wrong.

I'm confused, this is a prediction list and yet it claims to have sources? Where are they drawing the line between a prediction and a rumor?

Let's all hope that it's Linux based, and not BeOS. The Bullshiat OS.

I think they developed their own OS from scratch.

Not.

Oh yea, this is a good idea...

WTF? The hardware market is already cut throat, margins are down to nothing, and a decent PC already cost next to nothing. Why would someone dish out $200 for a google cube? Someone at google needs to get fired.

Hey...here's an idea, how about a box that turns your TV into a computer? I bet that would make a fourtune and everyone would have one!

Not at all, they're both the very best at what they do, which, as it happens, is providing customers with what they want.

gweilo8888, if you want to be that critical about it, "Download Squad" had it up before slashdot (check the timestamp), which was likely the source of the Slashdot link. Yeesh, I think you may have better things to do than claim who got what first.

That said... everyone is up in arms over what operating system a "Google Cube," would support, but I've heard nothing about hardware? How do we know its not an Atari 2600 with a Google sticker slapped on it?

Shadowspawn: this is really, really, really stupid.

Yeah, because that's a lot better.

This was on /. earlier, and as others said this is just speculation. Google doesn't have the capability to release an OS by 2006 unless they're going to piggyback on an already-there option.

Danger Mouse
If they are trying to use it as a loss - leader then it is not stupid. It is advertising for their web services. Many businesses give the portal to enter cheaply and make their cash on the service/ refills.

That, or making customers think they're providing them with what they want.

OR, providing customers with what they think the want. (subtle difference)

Agreed, this is just going to turn out a smudge on googles record.

Margins are really cut throat in this business, you almost have to expect a loss.

You know, nothing will piss away a good reputation of a brand name than selling its products at Wal-Mart.

I don't buy this story.

And if it is true Larry & Sergey need to get their heads examiend.

Love Macs and love Google, though sometimes they don't really work well togehter. Bill Gates is pretty cool giving his $$$ away to help end poverty, but his company is just sitting on their butts not releasing anything interesting.

It's like they gave up after XP. Yeah, I know VISTA is on it's way, but BY YEARS END?!?!

Let's make this thread flameoroonilicious!
