FYI a little tidbit here:

In Russia and the old soviet states often times the vodka comes in bottles that you can't close. They don't expect you to have to store half of it for later. They just expect you to work your way through the whole thing.

My Russian fencing coach always used to reccomend drinking several glasses of vodka the night before a match. He said you fenced your best when you were hung over, because you were _very_ aware of your body, and since all you wanted to do was finish it quickly and go back to bed, it kept you from ever hesitating when you shouldn't.

I was really sick at work with the flu last winter. My Russian coworker came to my desk and asked if I wanted to know a great Russian cure for the flu.

Before you go to work pour three shots of vodka and add as much pepper as you can to them. Shoot them and head to work.

As for the sore throat cure - yeah it works. Listerine works as well (it has a lot of alcohol in it). I heard about the Listerine trick from Lance Armstrong's reality show - he goes through is luggage and mentions how he always carries a bottle of Listerine with him during races. If he feels a sore throat, he gargles with it before the next day's stage and feels better.

Yeah for sure. At this party there was much singing and dancing. I didn't understand 99% of what people were saying but I did have the forsight to learn 'Nu budyem' which basically is the toast "To your health". That went over very well. :)
