I had a 13 year old minor trapped in a VW once.

I know Floyd Collins was a caver, I was referring more to the media circus that surrounded his death, made it harder for the rescue workers to dig him out, and made a man trapped in a cave under the ground not about the man, but the event and any sort of media sensationalism they could possibly come up with about the event.

A lot of times, the media hurts a lot more than it helps, and people encourage it. It makes me sick.

Gov. Joe Manchin was just on Fox News, from Georgia!
Guess he must still be on vacation or something.
I would think with something making national news in his home state, he would get his ass home!

He got on a plane and got his ass back here as soon as he could...you saw the pre-takeoff interview.

Unlike our Glorious Leader In The White House, Joe Manchin gives a damn and knows what to do in the event of an emergency. He wouldn't hide out on his ranch with his thumb up his arse while his spindoctors made it look like he was actually working.

/fark all the sh*t talk on WV
//and fark you too
///fark coal-mining
////but NOBODY deserves to be trapped a mile underground breathing methane gas.

Most of these guys aren't high school dropout's, there are just no other jobs! Logging? We need them to risk their lives and they do. Amazing in today's world of ME, ME, ME! As for the cost of living... NYC grocery and gas prices(really, you wouldn't believe it), cheap energy and affordable "housing",isn't really worth your life! It is almost impossible to get out, where do you go and what do you do once you're there? If you look there aren't a lot of jobs anywhere right now. I would love to see us move away from these archaic forms of finding fuel and find ways to enrich these areas of deep social neglect. Eventually the tourtured earth will give out on us, are we going to be ready? Send your hope to the families of these poor men.

That kind of dumb-ass liberal democrat rhetoric is exactly why I left the state I was born in. Ya know why people talk shiat about WV. Take a look in the damn mirror. I bet your back woods ignorant ass probably voted for the Grand Kleagle--oops----Robert Byrd. Yeah, ain't ya proud of your racist senator from West by-God Virginia. What posses a democrat to take the opportunity to spew hatred about Bush in the middle of a life or death situation that does not even involve the POTUS.

it took so long to get the rescue team to go in because they had to wait to vent the methane gas that had built up.
they are in about 260 feet vertically.
my cousin is in there now as part of the first rescue team.

God be with the miners, their families and the rescuers

Coal mining is honest, hard work. John L. Lewis, the last honest union leader, worked to make it safer. There are more dangerous jobs, like crabbing.
The first two woman coal miners died on the job.
With all the electricity we could get from solar, wind, tidal and geothermal our standard of living would go down to match Central Africa. Nuclear is the future, but the public needs to know that the folk who turned them against nuclear were on the payroll of OPEC and the USSR.

You're an idiot, ya know that? You think you've got it all figured out.

Well, here, let me blow up your whole argument with three simple words: F*CK ROBERT BYRD!

I hope he drops dead tommorow.

and that's coming from a registered Democrat who's a member of the same fraternity as Byrd (TKE...not those mouthbreathing jagoffs the KKK...that's not a fraternity, that's a group of slackjawed morons)

And, while i'm thinking about it, you single ME out because I slide a F*ck Bush reference into my comment when there's a whole thread of unrelated crap going on? Are you kidding me?? Get over youself.

And don't be too proud of that degree from ol WV Tech...shiat school in an even more shiat town.

You know folks, we wouldn't have to send these guys underground if getting a surface mine permit from the EPA didn't involve your firstborn and your soul. Tack on the fact you get flat usable land after the hollow fills, its a win win for the miners, their communities, and the US as a whole (Energy independence, can you dig it). Unfortunately some people seem to be scared of explosives and earth movers.

2006-01-02 06:59:56 PM
BXRWXR

Let's see, we have: solar, wind, tidal, geothermal...

All of which have way, way more environmental impact that plain old nuclear, which is here today.

I have heard that there would be a great amount of tidal energy available if you built a dam across the Straits of Gibraltar, though, since the Med evaporates much, much more water than flows in, excepting the Straits. Would be a really good excercise, I mean there's a huge population base RIGHT THERE WHERE THE POWER'S GETTING MADE.

2006-01-02 07:02:01 PM
I forgot... the order is "Geothermal, wind, solar, tidal" if you wanted to do that whole "earth air fire water" chant...

I find it quite funny you would scream about the problems with Democrats when someone mentioned Joe Manchin. He is essentially a Republican who was smart enough to realize the only way he could make it in state politics was to register as a Democrat.

So, in effect, shut the fark up.

2006-01-02 07:21:53 PM
Just heard on the local news, that this mine had 42 OSHA violations last week! They should have shut the damn place down. Mining is hard enough and dangerous enough without a bunch of damn safety violations.

OSHA, another fine government agency at work!

2006-01-02 07:29:08 PM
Indigus, you do know that to a labor supervisor with a profit-minded asshole boss breathing down his neck, OSHA stands for "Oh shiat, Him Again"?

Which is what one invariably says when that U.S. Government Issue car pulls into the parking area and an OSHA inspector comes out?

Sad but true. The more difficult the labor, in general, the dumber the workers and the less management gives a fark.

2006-01-02 07:30:22 PM
Oh, here's another "you might not have known this, but"...

OSHA does not have the authority to shut down a project. Yup, that's right. I know this because I've met some OSHA inspectors (fortunately, as a student not as an inspectee).

They can levy fines, but the only time they can order a full stop is if there's an imminent danger to health.

Wasn't talking about Manchin. I guess you hillbillies in WV still don't understand that whole reading comprehension thing. So when you can read a little better try again. Until then phukk you and ya mama. I wasn't even posting to you in the first place, you ass.

Furthest I've ever been underground was about 580 feet... (Mammoth Cave, Kentucky) I can't imagine being 5800' down.

Takes a special kind of person to be able to do that kind of work... I pray they're ok.

So your a TKE, huh? Did you go to Marshall? Were you there when those dick-wads burned thier house down? Anyway you're still stuck in the welfare state that is WV to this day.

So you hate Byrd? Good for you. You are still a blind partisan hack who just couldn't let the day go by without snarkin on Bush. Not the man's biggest fan myself (good war effort in my opinion, but lousy as a conservative)but the blind hatred of this man is staggering. It tells a great deal about your own ignorance and intolerance.

I like this reply here...

I guess you didn't get accepted. Sorry about that. Anyway, cheer up. You can still be a big fish in your little pond up there in the hills. The mail runs tomorrow so you at least got a disability check coming. Don't spend it all on beer and cigs.

Oh and just so we're clear....

Phukk you and all your democrat buddies, especially the UMWA

Sad but true. The owner probably had to keep the place open to pay the fines. Haven't seen any updates at all here locally for a while, other than "Rescue efforts are in progress." Hope those guys are all right, but I am beginning to fear the worst. Some above have talked about how much cash they make. It is a good wage for WV, but not enough for the shiat job they have to do.

Also, I'm not sure what made you think I was currently in West Virginia, or a native West Virginian. So much for reading comprehension, eh?

Good to see I wasn't the only one who read the headline as "VW" and found a little humour at the expense of some black lung jockeys.

I read it as V W. . .and was like "wtf you can't fit 13 guys in a volkswagen"

EDIT: Looks like I'm not the first to make that mistake

I spent more than a few years not far from the Sago Mine, in Buckhannon. I've been to that mine a few times, too, back when it was still the Grand Badger mine. I didn't think it was operating again...

Still, it's sad, and I'm sure all our prayers are with those guys.

It's not a Democrat vs. Republican issue, though West Virginia, through decades of Democratic leadership, hasn't diversified its economy past coal. Maybe timber, but that's it. At least the electorate was smart enough not to vote for Democrats the last two presidential cycles....

/Upshur County is one of the few GOP counties in the state.
//you have to live in W.Va. three generations before you're considered a "native" and since I'm from Ohio, I was an outsider
///wouldn't want to work underground... though I certainly don't mind spending a lot of time in the air

Any local updates on this story?

2006-01-02 10:38:28 PM
Not much, just the the rescue team is there and I think there still trying to make communication with the miners.

Fresh air is being pumped in but no one is sure if its getting to them or not.

9:00PM Update
Crews are only 1,500 feet inside the mine as they wait for drilling to begin for an air shaft and drop listening devices into the West Virginia coal mine where 13 miners remain trapped underground. There has been no communication with the trapped miners since the explosion very early this morning.

----------------------------------------------------------

So far thats all I got.. I will try to watch the 11 O'clock news for more info...

So your a TKE, huh? Did you go to Marshall? Were you there when those dick-wads burned thier house down? Anyway you're still stuck in the welfare state that is WV to this day.
I wouldn't wipe my ass with a degree from Marshall Community College, pal. Huntington is as big a shiat-hole as your precious Montgomery/WV Tech.

So you hate Byrd? Good for you. You are still a blind partisan hack who just couldn't let the day go by without snarkin on Bush. Not the man's biggest fan myself (good war effort in my opinion, but lousy as a conservative)but the blind hatred of this man is staggering. You're no different than everyone else i've read online...anyone that hates Bush is all of a sudden a blind partisan hack. Get a clue, jackass. I know it's a hard concept for you and your Rush Limbaugh approved talking points to accept, so try and follow me here: it IS possible for a person to dislike Bush and not be some Democrat Nutjob Sheep just marching in time with the rest of the minion. Maybe one of these days you'll turn the TV or Radio off and form an opinion of your own that you didn't hear on talk radio or see on Hannity. **See, I can make blind and idiotic leaps of faith and assumptions into ones character too. Isn't it a fun game to play?!?!**

I guess you didn't get accepted. Sorry about that. Anyway, cheer up. You can still be a big fish in your little pond up there in the hills. The mail runs tomorrow so you at least got a disability check coming. Don't spend it all on beer and cigs.

hahaha...wow, now this is just good ol fashioned internet blind sh*t talk at its finest. Is it possible for you to talk the talk without acting like every other farker on here and create put-downs without resorting to silly and outdated West Virginia stereotypes? I'm just wondering because you haven't done it yet, pooky.

So, keep trying. And maybe one of these days you'll bring something new to the table. I doubt it, but hell, anything's possible I s'pose.

Oh, and finally: F*ck the UMWA...F*ck Coal...and F*ck you.

//flame on and on and on....
