(Times-Dispatch)   If there's an earthquake anywhere in the world, this well in West Virginia knows about it. Here comes the teleseismicism   (timesdispatch.com) divider line 35

I wonder what my friend in the geology department at VT thinks of this.

2005-12-26 02:56:19 AM
don't you think you should ask him and not us?

2005-12-26 03:24:00 AM
OK, I asked him.

He knows about this well. Says the best thing about it is that nobody ever asks him for help with telemetry with it.

Also that this sort of well activity is normal and to be expected and that there are probably hundreds of similar wells all over the world. It's just that seismologists largely don't give a damn.

Furthermore, that the well under the building the geology dept. works out of does the same thing.

Submitter should RTFA. "Southwest Virginia" is *not* "West Virginia". We have flush toilets and cable TV here in Southwest Virginia, for example. Plus, we do not marry our first cousins.

Anyway, that well is only about 5 or so miles from me.

Something about this well gets posted every few months. But hey, it's a deep subject.

I hear seismologists invented some new machine recently that can measure the movement of the earth without use of well water levels.

What is so valuable about something that tells you an Earthquake just happened? What we really need is something that tells us when they're GOING to happen!

2005-12-26 10:12:56 AM
If I remember my mandatory college Geology course right, it can't pick up an earthquake anywhere in the world because the seismic waves get bent and reflected when they reach the Earth's core, resulting in a sizable area for any given earthquake that never gets the whatever-waves. Or maybe I wasn't paying enough attention that day and got it wrong.

When did Virginia annex Christiansburg to West Virginia?

2005-12-26 10:33:10 AM
Hey submitter! Just like to chime in and add that you're a retard!

West Virginia is a state... ever heard of the Civil War?

I swear, I'm so sick of people not knowing West Virginia DOES NOT EQUAL "Western" Virginia. Did you all fail your basic social studies courses?
NEWS FLASH! West Virginia is an entirely SEPERATE STATE from Virginia. Get it right you morans.

"We have flush toilets and cable TV here in Southwest Virginia, for example. Plus, we do not marry our first cousins."

True, Virginians start a little closer to home. One can always tell when they come up to visit, holding hands and towing around their sister-mommys and daddy-brothers.

Get a life you farktard, lived in WV my whole life and I have heard much better rips on the state than that!

West Virginia had cable TV BEFORE VA you fool!

Readings are transmitted from the well to the satellite (...) allowing DEQ and USGS personnel to check readings by computer.

Brilliant!

Oh yeah? Well, minor edema was triggering the seismograph in San Francisco, California's, peakside Josephine Randall Junior Museum.

Also, a network of educational laboratories and centers known as RDx was supposed to be operational in the state of Pennsylvania in the 1970s-80s to document the effects of a creekside limestone monument/shrine, but the concept was instead seized and implemented throughout the United States to benefit NATO memberships. The state of West Virginia housed one of those misplaced ed labs, and subsequent to private protest each of those ed lab regional populations reaches for something extra to quell the dread when a major disaster occurs which might have been preventable had the concept been appropriately applied.

Once again, idiot you make yourself look much more uneducated by posting the standard "WV has no plumbing" comment. For the record, I have lived in WV all my life, have a Masters Degree from West Virginia University. House has 3 bathrooms, 3 computers, bedrooms and cable and everything. Job is slightly over $80K.

EVERY state has poor uneducated people. Since we don't have large cities, ours mostly live in rural areas.

But you are doing a greaqt job of representing the poor and uneducated of your state for sure.

/Hit a nerve.

Be amazed that I can surf Fark and take a dump with out having to empty a bucket..

WV is not a bad place. Low crime (except meth) and maybe soon some more tech jobs.

Sell your small house in Kaliforina for 10 bajillonz dollars and buy your self a nice large house with a couple of acres and a lot less stupid laws and relax.

/Likes WV.
// Yes I live in a mobile home.
/// No not in a trailer park.
//// Nice to be 24 and have the "house" paid off.
/////Will buy a real house when I need one.

Wow. I was going to defend my home state, but I think my fellow West Virginians have done well enough without my two cents. We're nothing if not loyal.

2005-12-27 01:08:00 AM
Yeah, lafemur. I was going to defend my state as well, but I don't guess I really need to do so. Except to say that West virginua was the only state created from the chaos of the civil war, and that was because we decided we no longer wanted to be part of that shiatty state known as Virginia.

2005-12-27 06:09:05 AM
Humor me with the defense.

2005-12-27 10:36:26 AM
Yeah, but in all fairness, WV is rather dismal in winter. At least, Charleston is. Everything's just kinda of gray and worn-looking. In the summer, though, wow. Great place for outdoor rec.

The biggest problem with WV is that it's saturated with chemical plants, coal-mining, and other toxic output. The soil sucks. Meth is a HUGE problem, but by no means unique to that state. The people are quite friendly and yes, aside from a few, very much like people elsewhere in the area like, say, Ohio or Virginia. It is, however, the "fattest" state (right ahead of Texas). Lot of great antique stores with cheap prices, and there's even a town called Nitro.

My dad works at a hospital in Charleston. Really, it's a nice place to visit most of the time.

Science teaches us teleseismicism in a well in WestERN Virginia can feel earthquakes all over the world.

Why not teach the controversy?
