Someone want to give me the origin of the "Not Yours" images?

To those that are wondering why the voice vote wasn't recorded in the register;

voice vote - A vote in which the Presiding Officer states the question, then asks those in favor and against to say "Yea" or "Nay," respectively, and announces the result according to his or her judgment. The names or numbers of Senators voting on each side are not recorded.

Link to Def - pops

Hrmm, best judgment? hhrrrrmmmm

Bush is an idiot dictator.

Not exactly the outcome I would've hoped for, but at least the filibuster forced Republicans to negotiate.

Right - because you certainly would rather it be in the forefront in the middle of an election year than now.

You two ought to open a political consulting firm.

Heck yar! I'm sure that you can come up with a name too.

I am very happy about the idea of this being pushed back, especially since things seem to be going downhill fast. In case you haven't noticed sport, your team that you cheerleader for is not quite up to turf. It would take a pretty well designed terrorist attack, or some good ole' Cheney "BOO"s to get this thing passed in any form close to what it is now. Of course, this is just my opinion. For any further information required you will have to consult with my Firm (member) for a nominal fee.

Funny you should mention that. I don't think I have ever seen you even attempt to say something remotely amusing. Sad.

Let's face it. America was the most kick ass nation in the world for a long time. Not so much anymore. The government was originally created to govern for the people by the people. Now it's just opression of the people by those guys over there. If I wasn't so lazy I'd probably bail to some other country soon. Canada, for example, maybe full of sissys and what not, but at least they have a certain amount of respect for their citizens. Africa is another interesting place to consider. Sure the corruption is way worse there, but your average middle class American would be rich as hell there, so you can buy your way out of trouble.

/just sayin'

And you really think the terrorists will stop after that?

Um, maybe you haven't heard, but the Patriot Act doesn't do anything to stop terrorists. All it does is erode or just destroy the civil liberties of a formerly free nation.

I would consider the Beltway Sniper (October 2002) a terrorist attack

I agree with you on the beltway sniper. They were Muslim converts but for some reason that wasnt really brought to the forefront.

Voice vote, apparently. So they don't have to face the public.

It takes a small minority to force a roll call vote. It's fair to assume they all supported the extension until you see evidence to the contrary.

Stryyder: I have yet to see a proposal for what changes need to be made to the acts in order for them to be accepted by the Liberal Party. All I hear is no no no, not this is what we would like to do. It seems counter productive.

That's because the changes the need to made are all "no, no, no". Duh.

I agree with you on the beltway sniper. They were Muslim converts but for some reason that wasnt really brought to the forefront.

Maybe because it wasn't necessarily relevent? Should news reporters fall over themself to report every time a Christian kills another Christian? Or a Christian kills a Muslim?

I guess my point is: can you establish that the beltway snipers' (plural, since there were two of them and I'm too lazy to Google if the son was a convert, too) religion in any way motivated the shootings?

I've mentioned it in a total of two threads in my entire history of posting on Fark. "Thread after thread"? That seems a bit much.

That being said, I would like to make sweet, sweet Man Love with you. You could pretend I was William Kristol.

I'd be surprised if it was 100% support. Feingold has been pretty vocal about not renewing it, so if he voted for the extension it would be a shock to me.

No offense HappyDaddy, but that little line about your genius and handicap could suggest the following:
- Your genius is handicapped.
- Your IQ is 7.1.(i.e., They may be unrelated, but they are the same value.)
- You are a deviant and you are mean.

Assuming that your handicap is golf-related and not some sort of differently-abled reference:
"The difference between golf and government is that in golf you can't improve your lie." - George Deukmejian

Given that quote, I find a certain irony in that you call yourself a 'Lawyer/Lobbyist'.

We've got to start somewhere. Building a trust is going to suck, but you have to admit we're digging ourselves in a hole trying to sell the rest of the world that our warlike behavior is somehow supposed to bring peace.

That's insane.

It's going to take a long while, and there will be more outbursts, maybe even more attacks, but at least we'll be doing the RIGHT thing for once.

Submitter should follow politics more closely before making such comments.

Ried was on the Sunday talk circuit saying that he is willing to extend the patriot act for a short time, but it was PRESIDENT BUSH who let it die. Bush wanted 4 years or nothing at all and ended up with the Senate ending it.

This 6 month extension means Bush was forced to cave and he didn't get his way...but Ried and the other dissenters ( mostly democrats) did. For now anyway.

You are aware that this country is also made of people who aren't white and Christian, right? And that plenty of Christians don't support the PATRIOT ACT? And that plenty of white people don't support it?

Or was that just an attempt at a troll that didn't set off my troll-o-meter?

You people are freakin' cracking me up! This is really fun to watch. This mob mentality over the patriot act is amusing to say the least.

However, please stop deluding yourselves into thinking the govt is spying on you. Your collective lives are far to boring for the fed to be interested in you. Hell, half of you are just scared you'll get pinched by the cops for hitting up your dealer during a 420 call from your cellphone.

Oh yeah, anybody remember this guy? Let me remind you; Aldrich Ames. Busted spying for the russians. Clinton authorized busting down his door and searching/arresting without a warrant. Won't someone stand up for the rights of spies? Why do you hate America?

I have nothing agaisnt Muslims...I just think it was more than just a covincidence That it happen shortly after 911, around Wash. D.C. Were they inspired by a hate of christians or US citizens or just whacked out? Don't know but it seemed to be quickly dismissed!

You often see near-unanimous support for a compromise. Some budget bills technically pass 434-1 in the House with only Ron Paul dissenting.

My TotalFark sponsorship expired this morning. So in theory I should be more productive today, but I took some good cold medicine and fixing the details of atomic operations on our data store doesn't seem very appealing today.

Sign away the right to an appeal of denial of entry, you mean. I didn't even realize there was an appeal right for something like that.

"No one should be allowed to block the Patriot Act." - Bush

Huh. I guess I was under the impression that domestic policy was more or less decided on by representatives, based on the perceived will of the constituency.

I don't think Bush has ever been very clear on that point. This whole "presidency" thing must be a real thorn in his side.

Exactly. And I will bet Feingold voted FOR the extension. All the Dems wanted to do was to talk about it, while extending it.

Bush was the pouting baby, saying "Either extend it for 10 years or I take my ball and go home." Even a few Repubs saw through it.

If (in 6 months), those 2 sticking points are reworked, Dems will happily ratify it for a 10 year period.

ADVANTAGE: Dems

The difference in the previous situation?

(before the spying story broke)
Anything less than making the complete PATRIOT ACT permanent NOW is totally unacceptable.

(now, after the story broke)
A compromise has been reached, with a temporary six month extension to the parts set to sunset.

Actual reason?
This gives the Congresscritters six months to gauge the winds of public opinion on the spying story and adjust their tack accordingly before facing the voters in the fall elections.

I thought we all knew this was going to happen. There were more votes against the block in the first place.

Like Vet_Curm said though, if public opinion falls and this wiretapping stuff really hits the fan then it will be out in June 06.

Senators need to get reelected after all.
