(Sky)   Basque separatists continue to be a nagging pain in the ass. They're still blowing stuff up, but at least they have the decency to tell people to evacuate first   (sky.com) divider line 43

Dear Basques,

Either give it up or step it up a notch.

Warning people beforehand did not do the IRA any good either.

It's not a campaign of terror any more so much as a campaign of inconvenience.

Terror light.

"In one study of influenza epidemics, approximately 19,000 influenza-associated pulmonary and circulatory deaths per influenza season occurred during 19761990, compared with approximately 36,000 deaths during 1990--1999."

the Basques are still upset at what Franco, Hitler and Moussolini did at Guernica.

rightfully so.

blowing up the Corte Ingles... not so great... especially since I shop there when I'm in Barcelona.

Since 1975 there have been over 44,000 politically related arrests in the Basque Country, an average 4 per day. Spain detains prisoners for as long as 4 years without trial, often in isolation; many are released without charges and without compensation. This amounts to internment. This is directed mostly at politically and culturally active youths.

I take everything from Wikipedia with a grain of salt, but if that statement is true, I'm not suprised people turn to bombings to be heard. It's not as if people are too eager to listen to what they have to say.

ETA, if only KAPPA NU?

2005-12-21 11:38:04 PM
That loses me at the "this amounts to internment." Already sounding to opinionated, less factual.

Spent a night in a house in St. Thibery France once, next to the Marie (sic?) where a Basque wedding was being celebrated. Those motherfarkers know how to party. And the gendarmes were great about not imprisoning people just for getting rowdy at a wedding reception.

Talk to me about terror. Terror roams the streets of the USA every day, wearing a badge.

Yeah, I thought alot of that information was pretty biased. Still, alot of people write with more passion when they're motivated by crappy situations. I don't know enough about the problem to have a firm opinion either way, but when bombers try to minimize fatalities, it seems to give them some credit as being more than just kill-driven terrorists.

Chalk one up for civil disobediance...

I know I coulda used a few warnings the last time sh** started blowin up round here...

Wikipedia has a "factual accuracy needs to be verified" template above that bit, so feel free to take it with a grain of salt.

Though... The fact that ETA's still around doesn't exactly speak well towards Spanish policy.

Terrorists with a conscience. It's a start.

2005-12-22 12:29:40 AM
Is it not terrorism if you don't wish to inspire terror? What if they just want people to criticize and improve the government? I thought the end of Fight Club was preposterous at the time. Now, not so certain.

eta is a business just like any other..

they get to be farkheads and not do any real work and associate themselves with a movement..

if it werent for their so called political beliefs they would be a bunch of thugs as you see in the USA.

imagine the crips or bloods taking on a political stance then getting financial support from donations then you see extortion and 'we know were your daugher goes to school' type operations all for guess what $$

then a nice little bomb to show we mean business
the only business they truly believe is not working or doing anything except stealing

they use the basque as a crutch to be jackoffs that is the part that is a disgrace to the basque heritage

Most of the Government Officials involved in Spain's "Dirty War" have been convicted.

Except for this guy who I think I'm going to write a book about.

The Basque region in northern Soain is one of the most beautiful places in Europe. Rent a car and go for a drive through dozens of desolate towns. Take a tent with you - you can camp out in the open, too.
