Hey, when you want to throw away money to aging outfielders on the downside of their career...where else do you go?

2005-12-21 12:59:46 PM
Man, my Yankees are becomming the retierment home of baseball.

The minute I heard about this trade, the first word that popped into my head was "trainwreck". That's not a knock against Damon, 'cause he's a helluva ballplayer, but I bet that in 2006, the Yankees don't make it to the post-season.

2005-12-21 01:10:26 PM
CheddarPants I'll take that action. We'll both paypal the money to some neutral party. Pick your number and I'll cover.

Yanks don't need more batting power, they need pitching.

Meh. Whatever.

Mets in '06, baby!

CheddarPants: the Yankees don't make it to the post-season.

If they do, I'd think that the monkey will spank them again

flucto, no thanks. I like to keep my money. Every time I predict something is going to happen in sports, I'm wrong. I learned a long time ago not to put my money where my mouth is.

kliq

Yanks don't need more batting power, they need pitching.

While I agree that they need pitching they also need to be strong up thr middle and while I love Bernie he just can't get it done any more. It also gives them a legitimate lead off hitter, which Jeter is not

2005-12-21 01:24:00 PM
You know who loves this deal?

Gabe Kapler, that's who.

Crap. I need someone who is willing to offset the shameful amount of $$ I spend on Yankees tickets.

2005-12-21 01:37:22 PM
The Yankees will make the playoffs but they wont get far at all. With a lineup of Damon, Jeter, ARod, Giambi, Sheffield, Matsui, Posada and whoever DHs they will win their 90-100 games. But without pitching they arent going anywhere. Of course, my Red Sox arent going very far without a SS, 1B or CF either.

hmmm...seeing as this jack ball wrote a book called 'devils wear pinstrips'......(yes i know he is a red sux fan) i'd say this is the worlds largest case of sour grapes! Was funny to poke into a few Sux message boards and see the post go from OMG WE NEED DAMON to aww he sucks good luck!! lol as far as that "article"...used loosly...Damon made a mistake signing with the yankees...cause..of his hair....hmmm...good luck with that angle...no wonder he is on the less looked at page2 site for espn.....good luck with that book outside of MA too...jack ball

i dont think the problem here is that Damon has to cut his hair and play for a conservative owner.. the problem is that the Yanks need pitching. Also, the author is a jerk who sounds like he's reaching (this from a Sox fan)

Damon was one of the few faces you would associate with the team, as casual baseball fans looked at him and knew he played on the Red Sox. It's never cool in this day of free agency to see known players leave "their team". granted, he was in Oak/KC prior, but he got his recognition in Boston.

I am not liking the batting this year for my Sox.
losing a great leadoff hitter, likely losing Manny. Leaving who to protect Big Papi? Glaus? Will we get him and will he stay healthy and be productive?

I wonder how they'll treat Damon when he comes into Fenway wearing pinstripes.

the Yanks are shaping up to be like the Rams under Warner the year they won it.. except the Yanks won't win it. They'll score, but they won't win.
I'd take the Angels/Red&White Sox/Indians and yes.. the Rangers.. over the Yanks this year.

--ps:
3 games down, took 4 in a row, last one in your house. Then swept for the W.S win.
just have to remind you of that.

SCOTT BORAS CAN SUCK IT

Man I am absolutely tired of this guy single-handedly inflating the price of baseball.

2005-12-21 02:51:20 PM
Bah who cares, wake me up when ESPN starts covering MMA.

2005-12-21 02:51:25 PM
This was a good signing for the Yankees based on the merit that it weakens the Red Sox while strengthening the Yankees by a greater amount: this guy is an awsome lead off hitter. Personally the only guy on that team who I didn't dislike.

The Yankees batting order, with the exception of Posada, is now scary to the last man. The pitching isn't as bad as everyone thinks...not this year. Brown was a HUGE drain last year. He's gone.

And lastly, to all those RSN folks who mocked my prediction that this day would come: I told you so.

2005-12-21 02:53:52 PM
MLB = in serious, serious trouble.
Damon = dead to me...used to think he cared about the game.

The Yankees will have a weak throwing arm in left, a weak throwing arm in center, with a ball park that is basically all left and center - then there's the little problem of old and bad pitching. Ergo, many singles will become doubles, many doubles will become triples, and every Yankee pitcher will be scratching his nuts trying to figure out how to pitch batters so they will hit to right, which as any baseball fan knows, is just where you want to hvae the hitters aiming (hint, Roger Maris). The only sad thing is both the Red Sox and Orioles will be weaker teams next year so the Yankees probably will win the east, and then get stuck in the mud.

2005-12-21 02:55:46 PM
This is a great signing for the Yankees, I'm sad to say.

And, as a Red Sox fan, I applaud Damon for his 4 years here. No one consistently gave the effort that he did, and I will not soon forget what he did in Game 7 against the Yankees in 2004.

Unfortunately for the Yankees, he can't pitch.

2005-12-21 02:56:05 PM
the yankees pitching isnt nearly as bad as everyone seems to think. i agree that my first reaction when i saw the article was "well, that was alot of money for a position we could easily fill with bubba crosby, who we already have. we need pitchers." but after talking about it with some friends, here was the general feeling we had:

randy, moose, and pavano are usually bankable pitchers. 1 rough season isnt really enough to condemn them, especially since for randy it was his first season, so he will probably be more in control and less nervous this year. also, we have some good young pitchers that really were what kept us in last season so long, such as wang, small, and chacon. and obviously, we have the greatest closer in baseball history, mariano.

id still be a little happier with at least 1 more pitcher, personally.

Yep, time to hear the good ole' OMG DAMON IS OLD AND HIS ARM SUCKS spiel now because he's a Yankee.

Enjoy the pitching Sox fans!!!

Big Papi alone ain't going to save ya on offense!

I am unfamiliar with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. If only ESPN would use some of their valuable resources to discuss them instead of the NFL, college bowls, NBA, NHL, or upcoming Winter Olympics...

2005-12-21 02:59:09 PM
The end of the article is telling... author claims it's not about the lack of loyalty, but that it is a bad match, then ends it with the quip about Damon getting his tires slashed in boston....

/go yanks

Good god, that is one ugly guy. He looks like those fake cavemen on the geico commercial.

2005-12-21 02:59:34 PM
deadspace

randy, moose, and pavano are usually bankable pitchers

I can't believe the Johnson will be bad, but Mussina is toast, and Pavano sucks it hard. Chacon can't possibly be as good as he was, Wright sucks and who knows about Wang.

And the bullpen sucks. They just signed Dotel - who just had tendon transplant surgery in his elbow. They lost Flash Gordon, and Myers is pushing 40. Rivera is clearly the man, but can he possibly be better than last year?

2005-12-21 02:59:45 PM
the writer is an asshat, the rule about facial hair is far older than when George bought the team. if shaving his beard will make him teh suk then he isn't worth the money. then again how many times have the Yankees signed a guy who then sucked.

I love Sox fans...
Don't get me wrong, the Yankees piss me off, but they aren't as pissy as Red Sox fans are. Not even close.

HEY! Does anyone remember that the White Sox won the World Series for the first time since 1917? Just thought I'd mention that again... because ESPN hasn't blown the city of Chicago over it, like they did when Boston won.

hooks4feet: Man I am absolutely tired of this guy single-handedly inflating the price of baseball.

True, but you'd probably love him if he was representing you the next time you were up for a raise. Fault the owners as well for throwing money and long-term contracts at guys that have one good year (not talking about Damon here). How many times have we seen a team overpay for a guy just to get him - while at the same time complaining that they need a salary cap.

2005-12-21 03:01:10 PM
Please don't let Jesus go to NY! Just another reason to hate them...and I don't need any more reasons!

The Red Sox are and will be a good team this year. It's their fan's that suck. What a bunch of whiny, snot-nosed crybabies.

The Red Sox Nation is so full of angst and visions of entitlement that they give baseball a bad name. Manny can't stand Boston because he can't show his face without a hoard of idiots either asking him for an autograph or giving him some baseball knowledge(the fans surely know more about baseball then Manny).

Suck it Boston fans, you're killing your own team.

Couldn't agree with you more. The odd kickboxing championship or fight with Ernesto Hoost on ESPN is what keeps me up too late during the week.

New York? Oh, that's the two-team city that doesn't win the World Series. any more.

2005-12-21 03:07:02 PM
priestrape,

They signed Farnsworth to replace Gordon, which seems like a fair exchange. If the Yanks insist on using Pavano and Moose in the rotation, then one of Small, Chacon, or Wang will take middle relief along with Sturtze.

Small still hasn't lost a game, mind you. if they keep those guys I like their chances.

2005-12-21 03:07:20 PM
I remember Wolfanoz saying something very familiar when A-Rod signed with the Yanks.

How'd that work out?

/Anyone who leaves RSN now should be shot.

2005-12-21 03:07:56 PM
priestrape - i wouldnt say moose is toast, he always seems to bounce back and there are times the man is devastating. watching his knuckle curve when hes on is unbelievable and unhittable. pavano i'm still reserving judgment on, and i agree, i think we'll miss flash, but i cant fault him for wanting to be a closer in his own right.

wright and wang are both young, and i'm expecting them to both come back stronger this year, after getting some confidence from last year and some more training.

i also dont see how you can say chacon cant be as good as he was, why not? he was that good then, there is no reason to believe he cant possibly be as useful this year.

every year either i or someone i know says "yeah, but how much longer can mariano possibly be that good?" hell, it was me who lost faith in him after his horrible performance in the off season 2 years ago. but he comes back, and every time he does he amazes. i know he cant have long left, but i do think hes got a least another couple years left in him. he doesnt play that much, so hes not getting worn out.

2005-12-21 03:08:11 PM
I really don't think they overpaid, Rafael freaking Furcal got 3/39 and Damon is much better than he.
