I don't know WHY I went with the "1995" there, I meant to type "Leary's entire career" instead.

Oh well, fark it, you get the point.

Bill Donahue is an major attention whore. He sides with the GOP fundie platform almost all the time and igmores most of the social justice teachings of the church. He only cares about power trips.

Mike_Bolton: you mean the sound effects of Jay Leno giving satan's scaley appendage head for 5 minutes, then followed by Jay Leno blowing his own head off with an oozie leaving the shape of a giant Peacock on the wall... wasn't funny?

Haha. I did like the Leno suicide bit. "Ya gotta car? Ya drivin'? Seein' anyone? Gotta girlfriend?"

Dr Fever

Plenty of posts here, including one of mine, suggest that Leary's an unfunny douchebag even in the material he didn't steal.

It's not about stealing from Bill as much as it is being an unfunny hack.

The "sold out" type of comments always crack me up. So, if someone actually ends up making money doing what they want to do they have "sold out". That's just stupid. They job is not to make you feel like some sort of iconoclast for liking them. It's not like he make a speech dedicating his life to helping the elderly gain access to cheap perscriptions and then became a drug company lobbyist because they drove a truck full of money up to his house. That would be selling out.

Denis Leary - what a worthless sack of plagiarising shiat. he defines 'suckin satan's pecker'

Did anyone else think the fake Bush was the mose believable impersonator ever? I did a double take when he walked out. Kudos to the makeup artist. The guy even got the voice right.

You know, I said the same thing when I saw, and pointed it out to my girlfriend who agreed. It was eerie!

My favorite part was probably bringing kids in and trying to hurt them. The BB gun, the hockey game, the EZ-Bake Oven...great stuff!

"Plenty of posts here, including one of mine, suggest that Leary's an unfunny douchebag even in the material he didn't steal."

And we all know that if a number of people agree with your subjective opinion it becomes fact. Why is it hard to accept that some people find certain things funny and others don't? I know people who don't think Monty Python is funny, sure, on some level I think they are mentally ill, but hey it's there opinion. It's not like what is funny and what isn't can be measured in any factual or objective way.

It is my belief, opinion and/or theory that MOST Bill Hicks fans who flat out HATE Denis Leary and say shiate like "Eff Leary, he's an unfunny hack" are as bad (if not worse) than pretentious indie kids who listen to Belle and Sebastian and HATE anything and everything that more than 5 people might "like."

It's like the whole Dave Chappelle and/or Family Guy backlash...ridiculous! Farkin ridiculous.

And I'm gonna drive around in that baby at 115 MPH, getting 1 mpg, sucking down quarter pound cheeseburgers in the old fashioned non-biodegradable containers from McDonalds, and when I'm done sucking down those greasball burgers I'm gonna throw the styrafoam container right out the side and there aint a god-damned thing anybody can do about it................

I don't fault Leary for doing shows and whatnot, I fault him for selling himself out to sell motor oil.

Find Hicks' rant on "Orange Drink".

Yeah you really got my act down good, guys. That'll be great. "You know, when I'm done ranting about elite power that rules the planet under a totalitarian government that uses the media in order to keep people stupid, my throat gets parched. That's why I drink orange drink."

2005-12-14 07:36:03 PM
"I don't fault Leary for doing shows and whatnot, I fault him for selling himself out to sell motor oil."

Because his career was based on boycotting oil? How is this a "sell out" exactly? He's a god damn entertainer, not Ghandi. Entertainers do commercials. Heck, these days even movie stars do commercials and voice over work.

2005-12-14 07:36:14 PM
ADIDAS247: With Denis Leary you get Bill Hicks style comedy, and for those of you who enjoyed Hicks, it's better than nothing at all.

I'm a big Hicks fan. I'll take nothing at all, thanks.

To everyone who basically says that it's impossible to bash Catholics because they deserve everything they get, or that they should be exempt from hate-speech laws because they practice "hate speech" themselves...

You're idiots.

There is a fine line between giving an accurate portrayal (histories and documentaries of the abuses of the Church) and just foaming at the mouth and spouting bigoted statements. One is ok, the other is not. It should be obvious that you can't bag on the Catholics for bashing gays unless you're also willing to defend them against people bashing them. Otherwise...hey! You're a bigot.

I will say this, it would help if Leary was funny in some way. I watched the entire show and I didn't laugh once.

He's just not funny!

2005-12-14 07:48:50 PM
You people are reading waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay to much into a goddamn comedy bit.

"Hate Speech"?!?!?!

good lord...get over yourselves, people.

If you don't like Leary, that's fine. Fine and damn dandy. That is your opinion and you are entitled to it. But, throwing out terms like "Hate Speech"...that's so far beyond friggin ridiculous that i'm not sure I can rationally dicuss it....

2005-12-14 07:56:13 PM
Now this is funny.

// Atleast I don't have to watch that crap on the news about pedophile priests.

Brick Top, what specifically did he say that would constitute hate speech? I don't think making a joke comparing those who believe in aliens to those who believe in a virgin birth really qualifies as hate speech (but who knows, maybe he did say something really nasty, I haven't seen the show).

Mike_Bolton

I keep them in my profile for a reason -

A lot of Christians wear crosses around their necks. Do you think when Jesus comes back he ever wants to see a farkin' cross? It's kind of like going up to Jackie Onassis with a rifle pendant on."

Best scene in Ultrachrist is when Jesus comes back, and freaks when someone pulls out a crucifix. "Owwwwwwww! I hated that thing!"

2005-12-14 08:28:37 PM
So is Bill Hicks funny? A lot of you guys here seem to think so... The only thing I've seen of him was this clip I got from some site, ran for about 6 or 7 minutes, of him talking about creationism. It was one of the least funny bits of standup I've ever seen. Is his other stuff actually good?

Leary I've only seen one other show of his, No Cure For Cancer, which I thought was funny. This show referenced here was laughably bad though...

2005-12-14 08:31:25 PM
I think Catholic leaders are feeling more and more marginalized, so they are getting shriller. In the past 12 years the average age of chuch-going Catholics has risen by about 5.5 years. The number of Catholics aged 18-35 is half what it was 20 years ago and the number over 60 has doubled. The faith is fading out...

2005-12-14 08:39:29 PM
I finally get Bill Hicks. He's a comic that's too good to be funny.

2005-12-14 08:40:43 PM

for those wanting good Bill Hicks stuff, and he was good, or Leary stuff, or Belzer or any of the other 'semi shock' comics, just go to VERY early Lenny Bruce or Richard Pryor, Robert Klein or Woodie Allen and hear what was fresh in the early 60's. You would be surprised how much anger is recycled.

Brick Top: "It should be obvious that you can't bag on the Catholics for bashing gays unless you're also willing to defend them against people bashing them. Otherwise...hey! You're a bigot."

I would certainly disagree with that statement. Exposing the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church is a) not bigoted and b) does not obligate anyone to defend them. Most of the rest of your comment I agree with, so this sentence really stood out.

Weaver95: Gee, Dennis Leary saying something that offends people.

My.

That's just so shocking. Mere words cannot express, yadda yadda.

Dear "Bob", did you just exercise perspective?

Who are you, and what have you done with Weaver95?

Everyone who's saying that Bill Hicks is older than Leary and stupider, or that Leary stole from Bill Hicks...

you guys are missing both their points...

I saw this show and was offened.

Offended because it wasn't funny.

Roche: Dennis Leary stole my act!

If Dennis Leary stole Bill Hicks, then Bill Hicks stole his act from Sam Kinison.

2005-12-14 09:42:07 PM
You know, I think the bigger issue here is the Catholic League attempting to mandate what the rest of us watch, not whether or not Leary stole from Hicks who stole from Bruce or which one is funnier. Arguing the subjective merits of their comedy routines is completely masturbatory. Meanwhile, we're getting more and more righteous citizens like Bill Donohue attempting to have their belief system and moral code adhered to by the rest of us. There's nothing funny about that.

Ha. Ha ha ha. "Bill Hicks" and "genius" in the same sentence and you weren't being sarcastic. Man, that was a good laugh.

IMO Hicks most "funny" material is the philosophy album. Good audience that was into it, and he was just on when they recorded that. That's a good place for newbies to start, rant in e minor was recorded when hicks knew he had cancer and was dying, most of that album is just sadistic and sad, his angry rants from that show are painful to listen to and I still love that cd and all the other hicks bootlegs I have.

(A) Denis Leary is pretty damn funny
(B) Bill Hicks was pretty funny.
(C) Sam Kinison was a farking laugh riot.
(D) I miss the latter two, especially Kinison.
