In a slightly apropos astronomical segue, I saw the brightest falling star I have ever seen tonight in the backyard of my Brooklyn apartment, unfortunately I wasted my wish with "I hope to Fark that that wasn't a missile."

A large object has been found beyond Pluto travelling in an orbit tilted by 47 degrees to most other bodies in the solar system.

AAAaaa! They found Yuggoth!

Back away very slowly and maybe they won't notice....

Wasn't that a movie or something?

They found a big rock in orbit between Pluto and Neptune. This rock has a weird orbit. That is all.

I need more Buffy. It's hurting me.

The most important thing this thread can accomplish is to amass Buffy the Vampire pictures.

Oh shiat, I saw this movie... they are gonna start hypnotizing people via these portals so that they start slaughtering cattle with lightsabers and throwing the meat back to their bizarro-orbit planet via the portal.

(if anybody else remembers this movie I'll be amazed... actually found it on IMDB once, but I remember it took me like 2 hours of searching, and it actually had somebody famous in it)

2005-12-13 08:56:46 PM
well, ed, that would certainly be a farkworthy story, if something started orbiting having moved outward from uranus's current location.

2005-12-13 09:00:00 PM
and, i might add, i recall berating others for "uranus" jokes in previous threads. but i've been translating greek for almost 5 hours now in preparation for a final tomorrow, so a certain element of delirium has set in to my humor.

/i previously suggested that we use the greek spelling (and pronunciation) "ouranos" to avoid uranus jokes. oh well.

These traits make the object, nicknamed "Buffy" after the US television series about a vampire slayer, hard to explain. "Maybe Buffy is going to be a bit of a theory slayer," Allen told New Scientist.

But she suggests one theory that might account for the space rock's strange orbit. It involves a commonly held notion that early in the solar system, Neptune itself moved outward into its present orbit, from around Uranus's current location.

Solar Orbit "is only a theory"!!one!~!!

Is it Milliways, the restaurant at the end of the Universe ?

Only if the universe is planning on ending very very soon. Otherwise it hasn't been built yet.

Speaking of which, they're way overdue to name a past-pluto object "Rupert"

Uh, could someone dumb that down for me?

The Solar System is very flat. This planetoid is way up above the plane. Scientists don't know how it got there.

I just read a story about a mystery object orbiting Earth. Probably old but still freaky. "Could it be an alien spaceship? "If it is," says Chodas, "the aliens aren't good pilots."

Chodas? Choads?

2005-12-13 09:30:26 PM
I always say; "Space is cool. All of it". And, even though this is pretty dull compared to other space stuff, it's still pretty cool.

This helps to redefine what a 'solar system' is, not to mention what a 'planet' is, but both of those are really just semantics. What I like about this is that it shifts our perspective from two dimensions to three, and brings attention to the evolution of the solar system.

Gravity and physics do cool things, so space is cool.

/admits to being just an armchair cosmology nut, but still...

2005-12-13 09:36:45 PM
What are these guys smoking to call this strange object Buffy! What next? Find its sister strange object and call it Sissy!? You don't call a planetoid, or whatever a fluff name like Buffy but something like Apothos or Anubus!

Now THAT is a kick ass name! :-)

That was an old Apollo booster section. I think it's gone now, and will be back again in a few years or decades.

No. Some boobies are photoshopped.

But can anyone tell me what movie that screen of Alyson Hannigan is from? Please? I need to see it now.

Or am I being fooled by a photoshop myself?

Shadowknight: its from a series of pictures she did, i think for MAXIM or something like that. There more of her dressed as a schoolgirl and a lockerroom from the same series, no neekidness. Sorry to disappoint
