Seems the officer weren't too bright either.

There's a bunch of vital organs in there!

NO WAY!!! Well, I'll be damned.

Excellent use of the Florida tag.

My cousin did that once with a .22 shell. Of course he was only 3 years old at the time.

Let's get Lake Worth out of Palm Beach County and into Dade where it belongs. I'll help pass it over Broward.

I take apart bullets for the gunpowder... sure, it's dangerous, but not as blatantly stupid as hitting it with a hammer.

2005-12-10 04:32:02 PM

There are a bunch of vital organs in the abdomens of children. This poses a risk when a .45 caliber bullet is introduced. More at 11.

Wow, 16. Not 7 or 8, not "Mommy, what's this, and what happens when I hit it?" but an honest-to-FSM freakin' moron. Unbelievable. Darwin was robbed as the outfielder scaled the wall to snag that one.

I gotta ask:

What did JosB do?

2005-12-10 04:37:21 PM
I just...wow. I mean...teenagers do stupid things from time to time, but pointing a bullet towards himself and hitting it with a hammer? And they let him live? Please at least tell me the bullet did enough damage that he won't be able to ever reproduce.

2005-12-10 04:38:17 PM
I read the headline at "6 year old" at first. That made more sense.

2005-12-10 04:39:43 PM
I gotta say, I'm really rather surprised by this. Granted, I'm sure the gun powder's packed in there pretty tight, but I wouldn't have guessed that the bullet would be able to get enough velocity to piece the skin without being in a gun's chamber.

2005-12-10 04:40:32 PM
I think bullets should cost $5000. That way, that little idiot would be selling it on ebay instead of shooting himself.

"This kid could have died from this," Sgt. Dan Boland said. "There's a bunch of vital organs in there."

According to police, the human abdomen contains vital organs, necessary for survival. More at 11.

By the way, attention article author: The kid didn't find a bullet. He found a round, or a cartridge. The bullet is that thing on the front of the round that comes out the barrel after you hit the primer.

Too many people don't bother with proper firearm terminology.

Actually, both the .45 Long Colt and the .45 ACP (automatic Colt Pistol) are low pressure rounds and smokeless powder can take up very little room in the cartridge case. I too am a bit surprised that this caused a wound requiring hospitalizationl.

When you fire an un-chambered round, the casing and bullet fly away from each other in opposite directions. This would cause the round to be deadly when fired from EITHER direction, since the shell casing would be equally hazardous at that velocity.

2005-12-10 04:47:27 PM
Where did that extra l come from???

I SWEAR it was not there when I previewed.

2005-12-10 04:47:36 PM

hitting a bullet with a hammer may lead to injury

2005-12-10 04:48:00 PM
Methinks there's more to the tale than made the news. Brass fragments etc, yes. Bad reporting or BS?

Actual bullet...Ummm...Where's the gun? Flordia Tag placed properly I think.

185 to 230 grain slugs (that's a .45) need bit of pressure behind them to do damage. You will not get that from getting off a round outside of a chamber. The brass casing will fragment, burst or fly a short distance. The primer OTOH, is most likely to fly out of the primer pocket and pose a short range "threat" to the stoopid.

2005-12-10 04:48:37 PM
dammit, I look for a picture of Ric and two people beat me with funnier Ric-isms lol

2005-12-10 04:49:24 PM
Asmor,

The kid was probably hit by the casing, since most likely it was facing him, and most likely the cartridge was held against the ground or wall with the bullet facing away from him.

Since he was treated and released, it was probably a minor injury. The case probably only had barely enough momentum to penetrate the skin.

And the only way for a round to go off in your hands is if you so something moronic like this. It isn't like a firecracker . . .

The article says that the kid was treated and released, so the wound couldn't have been too serious. The bullet probably just pierced his skin, which I don't find too surprising, considering how the round discharged within an arm's length away.

Yes, that's how I see it too. About 20 years ago I had a rifle (Remington pump 30-06) slam fire and pepper me with brass fragments. I didn't even go to the doctor. But, Remington asked for the defective rifle and sent me a brand new replacement. I never even considered suing. That's why I'm a bit surprised this kid needed a visit to the emergency room. But, times are different now...it seems everyone wants to sue.

Wow, VideoVader..who know bullets consisted of the numbers 1-4? The legend for that picture would of been kinda useful, since I don't care enough to look it up elsewhere.

Thanks for the diagram VideoVader...I was beginning to wonder how I hadn't known my whole life that a bullet had self-propulsional abilities.

He is lucky some of the unburnt Cordite didn't get in his eyes and blind him, well if it did I bet he would have a harder time finding more bullets.

Thank you, I was already to do a massive write up on that topic. The grammer/spelling/apsotrphe nazi's have thier agenda, but technical folks also like to point out blantant errors. BTW: you are showing a flangible round, not a true .45ACP ball round.

//yes, I have been drinking and did not spell check
//.45ACP 230 grain bullet travels at approx 850 fps from a chambered handgun - equal but opposite reactions say 424fps if you are stupid enough to hit it, not going to calculate expansion of the case etc on velocity - see above slash
//still have a nice scar and numb finger tip from doing something very sililar 40+ years ago

Cordite is pretty well gone. Over the past century cordite has been abandoned by most cartridge manufacturers.

See, you're the kind of firearm-illiterate guy I was talking about. :P
All right, I'll help ya out.

1. Primer: When hit by the firearm's hammer, it creates a spark on the inside
2. Powder: When the primer is hit, the powder ignites and goes boom, propelling the bullet.
3. Casing: It's what holds the powder between the primer and the bullet.
4. Bullet: Powder ignition propels bullet down the barrel and towards the target.

Heh, could be, though I'm thinking the injury was different. You got hit by bits of the broken casing, while the kid got hit with the actual bullet. With your injury, did the brass make deep cuts, or were you able to pick the pieces out?

By the way, you wouldn't happen to know any good places to buy cheap parts & ammo for a British Lee-Enfield No.4 Mk1, do ya? I just bought one, but it has a flip-sight, and I'm looking for either a micrometer sight or a cheap no-gunsmithing scope mount (though the latter, I understand, prevents you from using stripper clips).

I found a little bullet when i was about 16, or 13 or something like that.

held with a pliers on the ground, with a friend, we tapped the end with a hammer. we knew not to point it at anyone/anything!! it got lost in the grass and wasnt fun at all.
