In the days leading up to Tech's Atlantic Coast Conference championship game against Florida State, rumors of mutiny spread like wildfire and created a giant distraction for the Hokies.
Virginia Tech was looking for every advantage it could get going into last Saturdays Atlantic Coast Conference championship game, but instead was faced with a setback.

The Hokie locker room was engulfed by controversy in the days leading up to the game after rumors spread that freshman punter Brent Bowden allegedly leaked information about Virginia Techs special teams plans to his brother Chris Hall Florida States senior punter.

According to players on the team who requested anonymity, Bowden himself addressed the team after word spread, apparently trying to put the issue to rest before the team left for Jacksonville to face the Seminoles. Bowden told his teammates he would never help out another team Tech was facing.

Before the meeting, rumors surfaced about the alleged exchange between Bowden and his brother, creating unwanted tension in the locker room.

Some of the players approached Bowden no relation to anyone on Florida States coaching staff in the locker room about the issue. The scene was defused before it got out of hand and Bowden, who could not be reached by telephone by press time, apologized about the controversy, players said.

The Hokies struggled to keep pace with their opponent in special teams during the 27-22 Saturday night loss. Florida States Willie Reid returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, and the Seminoles found themselves extremely close to blocking Tech punts three separate times. However, it is not wholly clear whether Florida States special teams gameplan was tailored to information privy to the Seminoles in the week leading up to the game.

The biggest setback from the chain of events last week was the damper it put on the Hokies focus on the Seminoles during their key preparation period.

According to several sources, coach Frank Beamer was livid at Bowden after a practice last week when the rumors surfaced. Bowden was reportedly told by the staff he would be dismissed if it was apparent the Seminoles were aware of Techs special teams plan and countered it with an unorthodox look.

After the game, Florida State safety Pat Watkins, who downed a punt inside the one-yard line, said he was not fully aware of the specifics, but felt fewer than half of Florida States team knew about the incident in Blacksburg.

One Virginia Tech player said after the game that the issue was controlled well by the team and the situation was minimized as much as possible. Another player said relations between Bowden and the rest of the team are again positive after he denied telling his brother any of the Hokies plans.

The team did not make a statement about last weeks events.

That's what the deviant Marcus Vick deserves, frankly - no success... can't win when it counts. If he weren't the star QB, he'd have been booted instantly from any team in the country. A one year suspension is a total slap on the wrist for what he did. Any non-football situation and he'd have to register as a sex offender for getting minors drunk and making them strip. Not to mention the pot smoking and whatever else. And I used to like VT, too... But Michael Vick is still ok in my book. Atheletes do dumb things... we all pretty much expect it, but when minors, alcohol and sex are involved, there should be NO second chances... period.

Why did VT play poorly and FSU play well last Saturday?

VT was ranked #5 and looking ahead. Last Saturday's game was just another stop along the way to a BCS bowl.

FSU had lost 4 games, including the last 3 in a row. Last Saturday's game was their season.

VT was looking pretty well shell shocked for 3 quarters, and yes, they started playing better in the second half, but FSU's defense kept VT in the game by making mistakes in the 4th quarter.

I hope information was leaked...they played like shiat.

Being a Hokie, I have to say the lost to Duke was a lot harder on me then this game. How the hell do you hit that shot, I know hate Duke as much as everyone else does.

It's just like Beamer to accuse, with no evidence, a freshman punter for his failures. What a turd! Tech sucks, all Vicks suck at QB, and Beamer sucks the most.

Wow...A CT article made it to the main page on Fark. That's awful.

I graduated from VT, and read the CT often. It is an embarrassment as a newspaper. The crap that gets reported on is pathetic, and the editors are completely useless. You'd be amazed at the grammar, spelling, and capitalization errors that go to print. I've read high school papers that had better articles and were certainly edited better.

That being said, I'm sure this article blows whatever actually happened way out of proportion. Tech couldn't get it together until the fourth quarter, which was far too little, way too late. End of story. Hope we look better next year.

Navy beat Army, so this football season will be judged as a success by me.
