A German dictionary shall avail thee nought in Bavaria. The dialect they speak down there is a mix between Klingon and alligator mating sounds.

Drew should have a big steak before he goes... Harrelson has some strange dietary habits...

Achtung: A German dictionary shall avail thee nought in Bavaria. The dialect they speak down there is a mix between Klingon and alligator mating sounds.

Sehr lustig.

The weird thing is that I can handle a Bayrische or an Oesterreichische accent better than Ruhrpott...and I LIVE in Dortmund.

Don't even get me started on Plattdeutsch...

Yeah. Only a couple of months late there with that story, guys. It's called Oktoberfest for a reason.

/although technically it starts in September. Go figure.

2005-12-04 12:39:01 PM
Oktoberfest baby!

2005-12-04 02:09:50 PM
What's a "pilgrimag?"

2005-12-04 02:10:00 PM
Sounds like a D&D villain. "Kneel, mortals, before the might of Pilgrimag the Harbinger!"

Shaggie

What's a "pilgrimag?"

A weekly newspaper for religious travellers?

Woody Harrelson made beer pilgrimage to Munich for Oktoberfest, Drew last seen packing his german dictionary on way to airport way back in September.

/kinda fixed it.

2005-12-04 02:13:28 PM
Thanks for the laugh, blahpers.

Yeah...isn't this a little late? Also, obligatory...

Oh, I get it!!! Hahaha, it's funny because Drew likes beer! Oh...oh...man, that's...oh...that's classic.

Wait, I'm not done HOLDING MY SIDES.

2005-12-04 02:14:31 PM
Drew's packing his German dictionary, eh? Hope he's also packing his time machine. There are 285 days 'til Bavaria gets all sudsy again.

2005-12-04 02:15:28 PM
There's nothing German about Oktoberfest except that it's in Germany. It was invented by the Americans after WWII to try to improve the German image. Still, it's a good excuse to drink a lot of beer.

Shaggie: What's a "pilgrimag?"

I think the submitter was too excited to give Woody Harrelson a HERO tag to check the spelling before submitting the link.

Incidentally, I believe that this officially proves beyond all doubt that the "HERO" tag officially jumped the shark a while ago, and this is what we're looking at now:

If I'm reading that article, how can I be writing this? Or does tense matter?

2005-12-04 02:29:36 PM

He's making a pilgrimage to Octoberfest ... in December ?

no. it goes back to 1810. read their site. they started serving food and beer in the tents towards the end of the 19th century. since 1950 (3rd time it took place after the war, starting again in 1948) they have been doing the now traditional "o'zapft is", but that has nothing to do with americans, either.

What I'm most curious about is how slow the entertainment news must be if some hack was able to take an off-hand comment by Harrelson, likely in the middle of some press junket, and turn it into its own substory.

...except for the fact that it was celebrated over 100 years before WWII even began. Look up 1810, horse racing, wedding, and Theresienwiese. The festival is nearly 200 years old now. The event just kept on happening because, as you said, it's a good excuse to drink a lot of tasty Bavarian beer. WWI and II were only a couple cases of interruptions. The US didn't really see Oktoberfest until after WWII when German-American groups started celebrating it in the States.

mmm... Bayerische Bier schmeckt mir... Gab mir ein Augustiner.. oder ein Weihenstephan... oder Spaten... Loewen... Hacker-Pschorr...Paulaner...

Hellz yeah, let's have a German FARK party!

Let's stick to tradition and rally in Nuremberg. Ach, if only Leni Riefenstahl were still alive, she could do the video!

/actually, I'd vote for Cologne, as well, but I don't think we'll get enough people together for this to make sense

Nibbler: votes for cologne

I would say Cologne, too. Go to a place like Fruh and enjoy the atmosphere.

Oktoberfest has been ruined by it's popularity. You're better off cruising around the country until you find some small town having its annual festival.

2005-12-04 03:39:20 PM
So, that makes four votes for Cologne. Da simmer dabei, datt is primaaaa!

Anyone else down?

2005-12-04 03:39:29 PM
