There is one thing I have noticed that trancends all accents in the USA, It is the use of "Ya Know". I can't seem to carry on a conversation with young people anymore without them driving me crazy saying "ya know" about every third word.

I was at the beach at a club when a German guy approached me and started a conversation. We had been talking for a few minutes when he asked me what country I was from. He had never heard the southern accent before apparently.

I think living in California.. anywhere in California.. recently.. within the past 50 years.. you have an average accent.. for USA that is. Basically, there is no accent because there were so many different accents. You pick up on others accents.. (mexican, black, asian) because its so varied in California. I'm white.. and never took one accent or another.. just because I'm white, but my point is that, ive been around just about everybody. For my speech, I pull from all kinds of ethnicities. Not that I use one or the other "accent" but I do use terms and other things from other cultures. As I type this, I can tell because my computer underlines "misspelled" words. For some reason, only California and "ive" are underlined. Obviously "ive" is underlined because its not "I've" and California is underlined because it followed it with several periods to indicate a break. But nothing is spelled wrong according to the dictionary. But that doesnt mean I talk wrong... or different from what the dictionary says. WTF am I talking about? Dont know.. Stupid Sunday drunkeness.

What version of colonial American are you citing? The colonies were full of jingoistic, ignorant people. The founding fathers represented a small, powerful minority. Most people attended school long enough to learn to read, and then took up a trade. Higher education was not for the masses. America was not a place where people wandered, waxing the age of reason. Slaves certainly wouldn't share your view of colonial America. Nor would indentured servants, most apprentices, the thousands of illiterate farmers, explorers, soldiers and prisoners that made this nation.

We agree on one thing: America needs more educated people. Will you be a part of that effort, or will you continue, as many of your ilk do, to alienate the same people you say need to be saved? How's that been working for you? How has it been working for the country?

It's interesting to me that people don't realize the difference between a redneck accent and a Southern one. If you speak like a redneck, you generally have poor grammar and limited vocabulary. Speaking like a Southerner is marked in many cases by softening harsh consonants, dropping Rs at the end of words, and use of colloquial expressions and words that are considered archaic in other parts of the country. Y'all ought to learn the difference betwixt the two.

It may interest you to know that the top public high school in the country is located in Alabama. From my years growing up in that state I came to realize that the idea of people refusing advancement opportunities because it would make them less Southern is a total myth. It is rather the case that they fall back on cultural identity when they have nothing else left. "I may be poor and have no future prospects, but at least I have my heritage."

America needs more educated people not kids refusing higher education so they can be "good ole boys" since southern hick culture tells them only "liberal fags" learn how to do anything with their mind.

It takes very little mental exertion to see a factor and claim it is the cause of all the social ills of a certain group. If you think that Southern culture tells people not to become educated for fear of diluting some imagined Southernness, I guarantee you're in no danger of being called "liberal fag" by anyone on account of your mental prowess.
