Interesting comparison. I'm sure it wasn't Mel's intention to do so, but "Passion" made a crapload of money because it appealed to Christian congregations who went by the busload to watch the splatterfest. "Apolalypto" sounds like some kind of latter-day "Dances with Wolves", where we once again learn the true story of how evil Europeans are. I don't know any kind of ready-made audience for that one.

My beef wasn't with the casting, but with what sounds to be another hand-wringer in which Europeans feel pointlessly terrible about all the terrible things their ancestors did, as though all other continents were populated by Smurf, Hobbits and Oompah-Loompahs until the Blue-Eyed Devil swooped in.

But now that I think about it, you know, Jim Cazavia -- Cavaze -- the guy who played Christ in "Passion" wore a fake nose. It's a movie. You hire the best actors for the production. Gibson's just getting into enfant terrible land.

But Gibson is no Herzog, believe me.
