so, it was on the tracks.. how exactly does a train on the tracks collide with multiple vehicles? *confused*
2005-11-23 07:09:05 PM
people stop on train tracks? what?
2005-11-23 07:09:26 PM
The track crossing is very "shallow", i.e. the road (Grand Avenue) is an east-west road and the tracks run WNW to ESE, or just a little off from straight east-west. It's three lanes of tracks, and four lanes of road, so there's a ton of crossover acreage.

Also, fifteen vehicles were "involved", but the train didn't hit them all itself.
2005-11-23 07:22:37 PM
Yikes. This was basically the beginning of an episode of ER.
2005-11-23 07:24:10 PM
I think some of my co-workers take that train home from work.
2005-11-23 07:39:10 PM
I hope this reminds people to not enter a rail crossing before there is room to clear it on the other side.

Trains can not stop in time to avoid you!
2005-11-23 08:08:39 PM
Last I heard, there were only about 14 injuries, no fatalities.
2005-11-23 08:09:05 PM
So far no one was killed...which is good.
2005-11-23 08:09:57 PM
CBS News reports at least one car exploded in fames.

Don't worry, they're gonna live foreverrrrr.
2005-11-23 08:10:58 PM
David Dunn, sole survivor, unavailable for comment.

Such things are inevitable with streets covered in alfredo sauce.
2005-11-23 08:12:28 PM
Apparently it's safer to be at a Farmer's Market now.

I LOVE when idiots commit suicide around the holidays

The damn train ran a red light! ...wait.

Cue the creepy picture of Samuel L. Jackson from "Unbreakable".
2005-11-23 08:14:55 PM
Trains are blameless, holy creatures.

/night car, plz
2005-11-23 08:15:06 PM
We now go live to the scene to interview everyone present and ask them omgwtfbbq.
2005-11-23 08:15:43 PM

I hope this reminds people to not enter a rail crossing before there is room to clear it on the other side.

...especially for a commuter train, during rush hour. Hell, even the Atlanta trains run during rush hour. This deserves a Darwin nomination, if fatalities occur.

"I'm gonna ask you a question, and it's going to sound a little weird, so just think about it. Do you remember me ever being sick?"
2005-11-23 08:18:03 PM
hawkfan I hope this reminds people to not enter a rail crossing before there is room to clear it on the other side.

From what I read, the gates and signals malfunctioned. According to reports, traffic was moving regularly across the tracks when the train arrived. One witness said the same thing happened on Monday.
2005-11-23 08:18:21 PM
Didn't an airplane crash there last week?
And didn't some doctor pay the ultimate price?

/need tivo
//doesn't watch ER anymore
2005-11-23 08:18:48 PM
Why is it it's treated as a tragedy whenever some dumbass stopped on the tracks and got hurt or killed? Driver manuals and common sense both state that you don't stop on tracks. And yet somehow it's no one's fault, or the railroad's fault, or the city's, for not stopping people from driving around gates!?

2005-11-23 08:19:26 PM
2005-11-23 08:19:37 PM
We bad, we bad...
2005-11-23 08:19:49 PM
Usual dickhead drivers trying to save less than 2 minutes. The train apparently hit 2 or 3 cars who went around the down gates. Those 2 or 3 cars were pushed into the other cars.
2005-11-23 08:21:07 PM
Because people on the farking train get hurt from this crap too even if it is the dumbass driver on the road's fault and then that vehicle will careen into some other innocent vehicle and ta da it's a tragedy.
2005-11-23 08:21:43 PM
CBS News reports at least one car exploded in fames.

Good job, CBS News.

The number 4 network in the USA for a reason!
2005-11-23 08:22:24 PM

From the Chicago Tribune:

"Fifty feet away from the accident, Tony Lisonti doesn't know how he didn't hear the collision. The 27-year-old employee working at the Marathon gas station at 7750 W. Grand Ave. in Elmwood Park said he looked up to see a car on fire, crowds forming, and scattered debris.

"I just picked up a brake pad from here in front of the station," Lisonti said. "There were too many cars. They were stopped on the tracksthe light is red, but they didn't stop before the railroad tracks. There was cars jammed between the gates."

2005-11-23 08:30:03 PM
people are arseholes - it doesn't mean they should be killed.

show a little sympathy, you jaded "holier than thou" jerks.

2005-11-23 08:30:59 PM
almandot: Because people on the farking train get hurt from this crap too

Actually, the train has so much inertia and such a huge weight advantage that no, very seldom are train passengers or crews hurt.

then that vehicle will careen into some other innocent vehicle

That doesn't shift the blame away from the person who stopped on the tracks or drove around the gates. It is still not the railroad's fault or the city's.

ajbaudio: they didn't stop before the railroad tracks. There was cars jammed between the gates.

Bingo. Someone willfully stopped on the tracks. Going to say that they couldn't help it because traffic ahead of them wouldn't move? Never enter an intersection or rail crossing unless sufficient space is already clear on the far side.
2005-11-23 08:33:47 PM
damn Namatad, troll a bit?

The people you describe deserve to get in a minor fender-bender, get a flat tire as they cuss at people on the road, but die in a tragic accident that probably left kids without parents?

Come on now....

Where was Batman? Where was Commissioner Gordon? HUH?!?
2005-11-23 08:34:24 PM

To be fair, the Associated Press reports via the Sun-Times:

Greg Sandford said he had driven across the tracks in stop-and-go traffic when he saw in his rear view mirror the accident.

"The van in front of me stopped short and I stopped short and 30 seconds later the Metra train just plowed through," said Sandford, a 27-year-old engineer from Chicago.

"The train hit maybe six or eight cars and they hit other cars and they careened into my car", said Sandford, who said that because the traffic was so slow he was only about five car lengths away from the tracks when the accident occurred. He also said there were no flashing lights at the tracks when he crossed.

2005-11-23 08:35:12 PM
Yeah, I saw this on the news (currently in Chicago visiting the 'rents).

The Channel 7 news, at least, is very lurid. It's gone from "breaking news" to "emotional pornography". I was disgusted at the coverage.
2005-11-23 08:36:04 PM
Advocates of Intelligent Design, what say you to the invocation of Darwin? If it's not Darwin at work, it must be a higher authority behind disasters such as this...

"They call me Mr. Glass."
2005-11-23 08:37:16 PM
Last I heard there haven't been any fatalities at all. Which is kinda amazing after watching all that.
2005-11-23 08:37:46 PM
I originally submitted this from an actual Chicago news source just as the story was unfolding. Why an SLC news outlet gets the scoop is... well, par for the farking course.

/motorists in a hurry to get to hala kahiki on what is alleged to be the biggest drinking night of the year
//yup, that's chicago traffic for ya... jagoffs
2005-11-23 08:37:52 PM
When I worked at Ravinia, north of Chicago, we called the trains "Silent Death" as there was no way to really guage how fast they were going and there was very little noise. Suddenly it was just there .
2005-11-23 08:38:47 PM
President Erik: Such things are inevitable with streets covered in alfredo sauce.

All the way from Kansas? Must be those darn Jews again.
2005-11-23 08:41:15 PM

Wow the internet sure does bring out the sociopaths among us.
2005-11-23 08:42:06 PM
Forgot to mention...
I've seen that very RR crossing. It's pretty goofy. I bet that everyone stuck in between the gates was like: "Yeah, the train'll stop for us." Like hell it did.
2005-11-23 08:42:50 PM
The drivers must have been high.
2005-11-23 08:43:45 PM
haha the people who got owned are like the petty chickenshiat losers who queue across intersections irrespective of the "DO NOT QUEUE ACROSS THE FARKING INTERSECTION YOU MORANS" signs plastered everywhere, so that they might avoid having to let in a single car. I say 'like' because this is a situation of aggravated idiocy: queuing across train tracks doesn't even prevent a couple of cars jumping in.

I'm with namatad. I won't miss anyone that stupid.
2005-11-23 08:45:00 PM
"Chicago, Chicago, it's my kinda town.
