Mohammed said anyone who wants to use the prayer areas should approach stadium security, who usually wear yellow jackets emblazoned with the words "Event Staff," who will then direct them to the appropriate areas.

Just follow the signs that say "exit".

The Icelander

Well, the problem is that they have to face Mecca (east) and drop to their knees and bow to worship. This can obstruct passage through a hallway, or cause confusion to those who don't know what they're seeing. Plus, afaik there are specific times of day to pray so it's not like they can wait till they get home.

Really it's kinda funny - I'll bet Christian people are thinking of this as "teh Muslims get preferential treatment over Christians - they get their own space!", while Muslim people are seeing this as "they're coralling us at the back of the bus - this is oppression".

If you have to make a public spectacle of your prayers, you have NO faith. The Bible specifically says that you should shut yourself up in a closet and pray there, alone, where only God can see.
So all these "Christian" folk making a lot of noise and bullshiat in lieu of actually doing what their Lord and Savior asked them to do? Not Christians.

"/I suspect that many Moslems are upset BECAUSE they aren't being persecuted by our society, this is why they keep pushing for more and more until we finally say no and god help us then"

Sorry but Christian fundies are guilty of this. Intentionally breaking laws and then claiming they are punished due to religious persecution. See: Judge Roy Moore.

"On the 8th day God created the Dallas Cowboys."

I remember T-Shirts with that printed on them at a Stucky's outside of Dallas when we went to Texas to visit family.

ChairmanKaga: I don't stop goat traffic in the middle of Bahrain or ask for a special room at the local public execution stadium to hold Communion.

you don't live in Bahrain, but you sound like the kind of person who would, if you did.

/Bahrain isn't exactly poor... I doubt there were problems with goats on the track at the F1 race this year.

I don't particularly like the Cowboys, or Dallas, but I'll say one thing: Texas Stadium knows how to throw down at a football game. Loads of fun in "The Corral", before, during and after the game.

I can't wait until these kinds of comments are delegated to the prayer zone:

I'd really like to thank God for providing our team with this win and putting me in such a great spot...

Because yeah, God has a lot of pressing issues like who wins a farking sports game!!! If he really cared, he'd stock all of the teams with philanthropists and charitable folks who play only for the love of the game and the fuzzy feeling that they took all that money off the table and put it to something that actually helps uplift society.

Doesn't this kind of violate seperation of church and state, since the Meadowlands is run by the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority? Hey ACLU, why don't you go after this one? Oh, that's right, because only displays of Christianity offend people. I forgot.

I hate the ACLU because they only seem to come to the aid of the most degenerate members of our society (rapists, murderers, pedophiles, etc.), but if someone puts up a Nativity scene on public property, they're worse than Hitler. I say, be fair with it. Call the Meadowlands worse than Hitler for allowing a religious display on their grounds. Or, slag off and leave all people who want to display their faith alone. It's not hurting anyone. And if anyone is offended, they don't have to look.

Yeah, they came to the aid of Rush Limbaugh as well. I think you are being a tad selective in looking at their case history. And if you can't grasp the concept of why they defend these people (it's not because they agree with their platforms), I feel kind of sorry for you.

Tuff Daddy Cool
The American system of government is founded on two counterbalancing principles: that the majority of the people governs, through democratically elected representatives; and that the power even of a democratic majority must be limited, to ensure individual rights.

Majority power is limited by the Constitution's Bill of Rights, which consists of the original ten amendments ratified in 1791, plus the three post-Civil War amendments (the 13th, 14th and 15th) and the 19th Amendment (women's suffrage), adopted in 1920.

The mission of the ACLU is to preserve all of these protections and guarantees:

* Your First Amendment rights-freedom of speech, association and assembly. Freedom of the press, and freedom of religion supported by the strict separation of church and state.
* Your right to equal protection under the law - equal treatment regardless of race, sex, religion or national origin.
* Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake.
* Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

We work also to extend rights to segments of our population that have traditionally been denied their rights, including Native Americans and other people of color; lesbians, gay men, bisexuals and transgendered people; women; mental-health patients; prisoners; people with disabilities; and the poor.

If the rights of society's most vulnerable members are denied, everybody's rights are imperiled.

Source.

2005-11-23 12:27:13 PM
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

If the space is paid for by public funds, then let those who need to pray either do it in their seats, the parking lot, or--even better--in the restroom.

2005-11-23 12:27:55 PM
all they are really going to do is open one of those Church/mosque/synagoge thingys you see in airpots and hospitals, of course this one will sell fortified wine and nacho communion wavers.

2005-11-23 12:28:09 PM
...wonders when the rooms for those who don't want to see people praying (most often quietly and to themselves if in public) will start popping up in stadiums across the country.

We could call it an Offense Free Zone but the Houston Texans might move in before it's finished. Whine cellar also works.

2005-11-23 12:28:12 PM
Kanemano,
Given that point, I withdraw my objection to this particular display.
HotWingConspiracy,
I understand that they want to protect rights. Rights need to be protected, but I also feel that they are way off base in more than half of their cases. How can they defend a pedophile? Yes, he has the right to a fair trial, just like everyone else, but the ACLU has defended NAMBLA, saying that's it's a constitutional right that they have. No. It's pedophilia. Defend the guilt or innocence of the individual, not the right of deviants to break the law and harm others in the process.
/don't care about defending Limbaugh, as he doesn't concern me one way or the other

2005-11-23 12:30:17 PM
When I was a kid, my dad got free tickets every thanksgiving to see the Boys play at the Cottonbowl. Walt Garrison, Tom Landry, Bob Lilly, Mel Renfro etc pretty much the whole ring of honor. Now live in Michigan, God hates the Lions. Even prayer couldnt help that bunch.

But they never argued that they have the "right" to sleep with kids. They (NAMBLA) do have the right to lobby to try and change laws saying it's illegal to sleep with kids. It's farked up, gross, and sad....but they do have the right to do it.

Maybe you can go into the restroom first and spend some time there studying basic constutional history, and then perhaps you'll understand that the meaning of that provision is that there will be no one specific state established religion (the way the anglican church is the established religion of the UK).

2005-11-23 12:39:54 PM
NAMBLA is the Godwinning of free-speech debates.

2005-11-23 12:39:56 PM
droptone,
That's all well and good, but I also feel that they are over-reaching when they say that certain groups are denied rights. Not everybody is denying rights to everybody else, and that is what I hear from the ACLU.

HotWingConspiracy,
Of course they have the right to lobby to get a law changed. It won't happen, thankfully, but I was pretty sure that the ACLU defended NAMBLA's right to do it. If I am wrong on that, I apologize, but I don't have the case data in front of me. Like I said, if I'm wrong, I apologize.

2005-11-23 12:40:16 PM
Kanemano: Yes, he has the right to a fair trial, just like everyone else, but the ACLU has defended NAMBLA, saying that's it's a constitutional right that they have. No. [blah, blah]

If you don't believe in the equal application of fundamental rights to all members of society, perhaps you might wish to emigrate to a country that more accurately mirrors your beliefs, such as China, Iran or North Korea.

P.S., you might also want to actually read and understand the details of what the ACLU was defending with regards to NAMBLA.

2005-11-23 12:42:38 PM
Uh, safetycap,
See above.

BlindMan

No, because then it would be trivial to be more specific - congress shall not establish a state religion. Crystal clear. They said "no law _respecting_" a religion. I take that to mean that the original intent was for Congress (and thus the Government at large) to ignore the existence of religious establishments. The government should be totally 100% ignorant of any specific religion.
