However, Nyberg said she believes it probably was a North American species that can remain under the ice for 150 days by lying dormant.

Yeah, what would "wildlife experts" know about turtles anyway?
2005-11-21 09:51:30 PM
thatguymark1: Call me when it's 175 years old.

Looks to me like your standard, run-of-the-mill, red-eared slider. Dime a dozen here in the states.

Maybe if it had an ancient virus that will now spread throughout the turtle population...

...and maybe everyone would freak out about how it might spread to people and make us all grow shells or something.

/hey! it's my Boobies!
//just getting the n00b stuff out of the way
2005-11-21 10:04:31 PM
Turtle in article looks an awful lot like the turtles I see regularly here in Minnesota... so I am inclined to believe the lady is correct and the 'wildlife experts' in this case are wrong.

Turtles all the way down!
2005-11-21 10:06:10 PM
Cute headline

I don't get it. Any non-fark snobs care to fill me in?
2005-11-21 10:16:17 PM
Frogs have also been known to have anti-freeze (natural) in their bodies... so that they can be thawed too.

/why does frozen food never thaw fast enough?
//mmm... a pizza pocket
///mmm... slashies...
2005-11-21 10:18:02 PM

Bang on, dude. That is a red-eared slider.

They can't freeze solid the way that young painted turtles can, so it must have been in a liquid pocket between ice layers in that water.
2005-11-21 10:19:45 PM

/hey! it's my Boobies!

I love the fark filter. and if that wasn't the filter, I'm mildly aroused
2005-11-21 10:21:24 PM
Yeah, that's one of those headlines that you read and say to yourself "there ain't no way I'm not clicking on this link."

bwahahahaaa *picks nose* Why do you think we exceedingly charming veterans need to tell YOU? *he thawed a turtle? GOLD *snork* You don't look like you'd "get it" anyway, so come back after 5 years of hard posting and then I'll tell you, if I so care. *scratches behind*
2005-11-21 10:27:49 PM
Antonsmith1 (and others)

The headline is a reference to one of the funniest threads ever to exist, which started out simply "I saw a turtle" and continued on from there to become (I believe) one of the longest threads in fark history.

It must be seen to be believed, and even then the shear magnitude of the collective brilliance that can exude from the corners of farkdom will fill you with awe, and wonder, and a sense that truly is a higher power.

Or something like that.

Also, not that surprising that Swedish wildlife experts are not that familiar with North American herps. Since they don't have any native turtles there, it's not something they get much exposure to. If you need to know the difference between a fisher, a marten and a tayra, these are your guys though.
2005-11-21 10:28:40 PM
If the damn turtle can live under ice for 150 days why the hell is it in her tub. Leave the damn thing alone. I am sure it would be happier with the other turtles.
